I'm currently at the point where I can leave the castle and go to the Circle of Magi to save both Isolde & Conner.  My question is once I return will I still face the enemies I would have had I chosen to go after Conner?  If no enemies will I at least have access to the rest of the castle for looting purposes?

Once Conner is cured, the enemies disappear. You can just slay them and then leave.

One other question, if I do go after the enemies now, is there a point of no return where I'm committed to then battling Conner?

Yeah, there will be a room with Conner in it. And beyond is the room with the arl.

Don't go towards that room.

Well, don't go towards that room if you don't want to commit yourself to killing Conner.
