you need to find out about his heritage(by going to Redcliffe) then next time you talk to him( approval must be 27+) he will start it.

Here's a trick. You just have to arrive at Redcliff assuming you have the approval. The Redcliff quest won't trigger until you walk onto the bridge which triggers cutscene where you talk with the villiager. If you talk with Alistair before that, you can activate the sister quest, and then immediately leave Redcliff and the Redcliff quest won't activate (and the monster levels won't be set).

I did that on my last play through, lol. I went to Redcliffe, and after the conversation I realized I wanted to go to Orzammar XD

Ah, I did Redcliffe already without him with me in the party(had him in in first playthrough) Can I go back with him, and what else would trigger the start of the revelation of his heritage, etc?

I believe that all you have to do is go back with Redcliff with him. Of course, you then know from another source (Bann Teagan) about Alistair's paraentage so some conversations change somewhat.

Hmm, just ran around in Redcliffe with Al then came back to came, no instant conversation. Any other suggestions?

You have to initiate the conversation in Redcliff Villiage. Alistair won't do it for you.

Ah, looks like according to the wiki I have to wait until I do the Sacred Ashes quest before I can go on this companion quest of sorts since I didn't start it up on my first run in Redcliffe.

I did the same this as you, JnEricsonx, and Alistair's romance quest won't progress. Will it continue as usual after the Sacred Ashes, do you think? I could reload my game but I'd have to replay all of the Redcliffe quests up to them sending me off to the Circle Tower to fetch lyrium. Any advice, you guys?

It will progress. You have to learn about his heritage, however, which you won't until you revive Arl Eamon.
Once you revive Eamon, he'll give you all the information needed, and then, provided your approval is high enough, next time you click on Alistair, or if you go to Denerim, he'll ask to visit his sister.
Edit: One real advantage to things happening this way is there is one subsequent conversation that makes so much more sense than if you hear about his heritage sooner.
