Unfortunately some people play characters of the opposite sex... authenticity would be difficult in such cases.Jab0r wrote...
If you want it to sound as though the PC is voiced, you can say each line of dialogue out loud to yourself before you click on it

No matter, just try to speak like the opposite sex, and then asume that the voiceactor is horrible.

lol this is what I thought, I was just confirming. It's too bad though, it'd be awesome.
But hardly doable, due to the numerous origins and sex/races, plus dialogue options. Would require too much voice acting.

I love voicing the lines myself. I feel like an idiot, but I like pretending I can sound professional. Teehee.
ME TOO-OOOOOO!
I think more people should do it. Besides, having a non-voiced PC expands the depth of creativity! I don't like the direction things are headed for PCs in RPGs. I like having them non voiced.

I'm really glad the PC doesnt talk. I dont want to read the line of dialogue, THEN hear it spoken. Its like watching a movie with script in hand, reading one line ahead of the movie
Well that was the good thing about mass effect very seldom did he actually say what you selected. Often he would say something else similar to what you selected. But as a whole he still got the point close to what you picked.

I get'cha, but to me it just seems like a bit of a waste. Plus, I can only imagine what it'd be like to have every line of dialogue spoken by EVERY possible voice you can choose, for EVERY possible gender and race.

It isn't that impropable that something like that will be done soon (and it is very likely that it will be Bioware who does it first). And of course it is feasible. Just have a look at Star Wars - The old Republic. They are doing the voices all the characters there. Which means player characters and NPCs. They say it's propably the biggest voiceover project ever (including games and movies). And this also means that with every expansion, every big addon or patch (if the latter contains new quests) they will need to do new voices again. And with a MMORPG there will be a much bigger amount of dialogue than in a single player RPG. So I think it's only a matter of time until something like that is done for games like DA:O.

it would be a huge amount of work for little reward (as the devs said, if they had inculded it, DA would be 50% shorter)
it would break immersion for some people since there is no way all VA possibilities could be covered.

Lets see, at least six new voices with about the same amount of lines as everybody else. That would be a raise of recorded lines by 700%. Still not worth it in my opinion. Especially if you read the line and then only get to hear it spoken. In mass effect there was the cinematic effect, in that you were more of a director of the conversations than the one having them.

Well, speak for yourself. Voices are what bring characters to life. If it wasn't like that we wouldn't need voices for the NPCs as well. Also, Bioware is known to go were other game companies don't dare to go. I don't know about if the dialogues in Dragon Age Origins are like in Mass Effect. Do you have any information what they are going to be like? I can't remember having seen a dialogue in a video up until now. Thought it would be like in Mass Effect but I could be mistaken. And believe me, this is what future RPGs are going to be like. They will be fully voiced even with different playable races. Just because it hasn't been done until today doesn't mean that it won't be done. Games evolve and get more complex, more extensive. Else we would still be playing text-based RPGs like in the old days.
I would never touch a kitten btw. I'm allergic to cat hair.

You choose what is said, word for word. Not just a general thing (like mass effect). It maybe just me but I'd probably click by a lot of the lines if I knew what they were.
And as for no videos, behold: www.youtube.com/watch

With a game that is not open-ended and everyone is playing the same character (or one of a few limited options), then it is best to have voice acting so that I feel connected to the character since I didn't create him/her.

@FKSSR Well, a true RPG would be P&P for me. And there you can imagine everything, starting with your surroundings to the people you meet. An RPG on a PC will always be somewhat limited. But I get your point. On the other hand it wouldn't be a big deal to include an option to mute the characters voice for people like you who prefer not to hear it. But I think many people are like me and would prefer the PC to have a voice.
