I'm getting driven crazy by this. Everytime I start my game (on Windows 7), all I see is a black screen. I have to control-alt-delete to open task manager t oget rid of it. I've spent 3 hours looking everywhere online, but no one seems to have any idea on how to fix it. Did they never find a fix all these years later?

Official support isprovided by EA. EA's stance is that Win7 came out after ME was released, therefore they do not support Win7 and ME on the same platform.

Theres a few threads around with various possible fixes, but nothing definate due to lack of support from EA.

Wow that's a pretty BS response (By EA). I mean Mass Effect 2 is in the running for game of the year, and the third's coming out this year. I know that I'm not buying the sequals if I can't get the first to work, which is a shame, because the game seems perfect for me.

I use windows 7 and ME1 Is working fine for me. I didn't really do anything. I just run It from binaries. So It does support It.

I don't think you're going to get much help without posting specs.

The only thing I can add is the standard "try updating your video drivers." (Bet you haven't heard that one. ;))

His specs must be very horrible If It's a occurrence due to the specs so I doubt It, but If his specs are that bad then yes It might be the pc and not the game. I just remembered something, have you updated the game to the latest version? I.e downloading bioware's patches. They might help and I do believe there's a manual patch for the client as well. Who knows that might get rid of the black screen issue. Or perhaps something went wrong with the installation. In any case try updating If you haven't.

Ooh I feel stupid, it's probably the instalation. I had to install it manually because the instalation wouldn't work because I didn't have something called safe-run. I looked on line and BioWare said to copy everything from the zip folders to the file. Any ideas on what I might have missed?

No I don't know, sorry. Because I haven't gotten a black screen myself before If I recall correctly. Though I know the reasons why It might occur, I don't know what In particular that could have gone wrong with the installation (i.e what files) D; But you should probably ask a moderator or administrator that Is active In the ME sections.

Given that the release date for the PC version was May 28, 2008, you are using some brand new version of math to reach "three years" with this supposed fault you are fretting about only semi-seriously (omitting the data = not being serious).

No, if I wasn't so serious, I wouldn't have made the mistake. I was heated cause I wasted 50 dollars for a game I was really excited about. If I wasn't hot-headed, I would have thought about what I wrote, not just ranted lol. But that's really beside the point here. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Thanks for the suggestion Calien, but I tried that before, and unfourtanetly, no dice. Still have a week before I get back home to try it on my home XP. I'd like to enjoy the game while I still have time to on vacation, so I'd really appreciate the help.

Wait how did you fix it? I see a lot of people are having this issue so I don't think it is your graphics card lol, nice try though.

I have a solution to the “black screen on startup” problem with Mass Effect.

Simply replace the openal32.dll and wrap_oal.dll in \\mass effect\\Binaries with the files of the same name from \\Windows\\system32.

The files in \\system32 should be larger than the ones you replace in \\binaries.

When I had onboard sound, ME worked fine. After adding an Audigy 4, I had the black screen problem. This solution fixed it. It may or may not solve whatever is causing ME to hang for you.

No, for some reason that also didn't work. I did that a while ago, but I gave it another try, but no lucks. Thanks anyway though.

Can you give more details yanks on how to do that? I do it by using the windows explore? How do I replace the ones in mass effect binaries with the ones in system32? Copy and past or drag and drop? I cant find those files in system32

Don't forget that you should install it, and only then copy the files.

@Yanks27th: you do not even see the BioWare video (BWLogo.bik), just a black screen?
Could you provide a log from %USERPROFILE%/Documents/BioWare/Mass Effect/Logs directory?

Lems: What version of windows you running? If its XP, then it only recognises up to 4gb (3.78gb to be precise), regardless of how much is physically plugged into the machine

Lems & jbowln: Read this; http://social.biowar...1/index/2012975

Then post with some details we can use to help sort out the problem.

What audio card do you have? Does it require certain "HD Audio" Codec drivers?
