But then the same can be said for Ashley, Kaiden and Wrex as well. They can die in ME1, so then by the logic a lot of people in this thread seem to have, they cannot come back as squaddies in ME3.

The difference is that they fill the same role.  Either one or the other fit in the 'surviving Alliance soldier' niche.

The ME2 squad mates are one of 12 and any given combination of them could be present in ME3...this makes dealing with them a bit more difficult.

Which brings me back to my point that Kaiden/Ashley/Liara will have VERY significant roles in ME3 even if they aren't back as squadmates. Tali/Garrus lack this and thus will most likely be in ME3 as fan service and less plot device that will have a major impact on Shepard in a postivie or negative way.

I respectfully disagree with most of what OP says.

As a Garrus fan, I'm really glad he returned in ME2. His character was further developed in ME2 and you are given another chance to 'harden' him. It seems very unlikely to me that Garrus will leave Shepard again in ME3 - what's he going to do? Off fighting evil on his own? Join SPECTRE/return to C-Sec He's already done all those!

Tali, on the other hand, has even less possibility of NOT appearing in ME3. If you get her exiled, she will have nowhere to go but to stay with you. She can try to survive alone, but so far we've seen that every other Quarian who does that have failed (that slave on Illium and the accused thief on the Citadel). Genius or not I don't think Tali will be that much different - Quarian physiology requires a supporting community for them to survive. If she's not exiled, then she'll most likely be an Admiral in ME3 (heavily hinted in ME2 dialogues) and leading the Quarian fleet in your support.

What makes people think Tali/Garrus came back because their fans were the most vocal?

When people were complaining about Grunt's trailer, a writer explained that Bioware was under the impression Wrex was the most popular. All characters have to be like Wrex! Therefore marketing focuses on these violent characters such as Grunt.

So why didn't they make Wrex return? They thought he was the most popular.  Wouldn't the fans want him back as a squad member?

Tali was given an important role that will hopefully be realised in ME3 I'm pretty sure she'll be pivitol in the Quarian/Geth peace talks.

Garrus on the other hand.... I felt he was just stuck in there.

I was also under the impression that Wrex was the most popular before ME2 hit. I think he didn't come back for the same reason Tali and Garrus did come back, he can die in ME1. Tali and Garrus returned because in every playthrough of ME1 their outcome was similar.

I'm a fan of Tali and Garrus and I'm glad they're back. I like that there's an element of familiarity in the ME2 squad and I wanted to get to know them better. No regrets.

Do I wish Tali and/or Garrus weren't in ME2?

Well, no. I'm quite pleased they were there, and I wish I could have seen more of the other ME1 squaddies.

Happy New Year. :)

I want as much Garrus and Tali as I can get, and I was completely thrilled that they were in ME2, regardless of what else may happen. :)

Wow, people actually think Tali and Garrus might be NPCs in ME3? That's really stupid. Why would they do that to two of the most popular characters? That makes no sense.

This.  I was just overjoyed to have them back as squadmates...finding out Garrus was a romance option was simply heavensent.  I have no regrets over either of them being back.

Also...them being included in ME2 does not necessitate them being nonexistent or cameo'd off in ME3.  Is it possible? Sure, and if BW wants to make a fluffy pink Reaper shaped like a sow they could do that too.  This is the last game of the series.  I will choose to go into this next year of anticipation with hope for the best, that BW will end all of this with a bang and not a whimper.

Besides...the reason for cameos and an unfortunate lack of impact from past decisions was explained by BW as being necessary to keep the number of possible scenarios down to a minimum in this middle chapter.  They stated they could, and would, go all out for ME3...I'm going to try and take them at their word on this one and try to hope for the best. :)

Honestly, I never used either Garrus or Tali in ME1. My squad was always Wrex and Kaidan. Nevertheless, when they were announced as returning in ME2, I was happy as I still liked their characters and the sense of comradeship they gave to my game. They were part of my squad even though I never took them out of the ship, aside from their personal quests.

Then, in ME2 everything changed. I think because they were the only returning characters, I connected to them instantly in a kind of 'We're getting the band back together!' kind of way. While the band didn't exactly reform, there was still that connection, that history with the characters that made them special. As a result, Garrus ALWAYS came with me in ME2. I don't care what mission it is, he always holds one of the slots in my squad. As well as being my favourite character and squad member, he's also my LI for 3/4 of the ME2 playthroughs, with the other character being loyal to the ME1 LI. I still don't use Tali really, but I love her character more.

So now, I can honestly say i'm glad they were in ME2 as it's given me a new appreciation for their characters and now that i've started a new game in ME1, Garrus has become my main bro in that game as well.
