I just picked this up today (coincidentally I'd planned on spending some of the money from x-mas item returns on the Platinum box at a local retailer and imagine my joy to see it posted on Steam!) and after being a loyal NWN player for the past few years, I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any good PWs, especially RP worlds.
I've begun downloading the patches for the Baldur's Gate PW as I've heard good things and it's the only NWN2 PW with an overabundance of players.

I looked at the things on Steamworks identified as mods and they all seem to be Source engine mods. So I'm going to suspect Valve only allows mods of Valve's games.SvartWolf wrote...
fourth. is there any plans from the community to release the more finished and polished adventures like steamworks mods? (much akin to HL2 mods like Pirates Vikings & Knights II) this certainly would help a lot in the promotions of great mods and would help to track updates and further development in various of teh mods, and would help sparkle teh interest in more casual players.

really? to speak the truth i don't have too much insight of how mods and steamworks works (derp)...
after exploring a little more, i've seen that the steamworks mods thingie seems to be also extended to the unreal engine mods. and thinking about it, i believe that steam have offered me to install killing floor mod "Defense Grid" and Red Orchestra mods "Darkest Hour" and "Mare Nostrum",yet i haven't tried them so i'm not exactly sure if they have all the steamworks features.
yet maybe there is a chance providing that there is the will to do it? I mean, Valve seems to be working with Epic`s Unreal Engines even if they more often than not their games tend to be direct competitors, Aurora Engine games usually don't really compete with anything valve have on their catalogs.
And which games use the Aurora Engine? i know of Neverwinters 2 and The Witcher, there are more? still, The witcher have been a heavy hitter on steam, and Neverwinter 2 seems to be following the suit, if there is enough demand, maybe there is a chance?
and also, even if i've instaled lots of things from the NWNvault, i've always felt awkward in that place.. and usually manual installing too much things i tend to get too messy

Nope.
Steam allows mods of any type, Source, Gamebryo, and Aurora.
Already running around a PW using the Steam version, and have the texture packs installed. Hell, Steam even gave me a mods folder to put everything in, its working wonderfully.
Now we just need Arcanum, KotOR2, BG1/2, and the Icewind Dale series on Steam, and my life will be complete.
e: The Toolset is also included! Open up Steam, and go to the "Library Tab" then under that should be four options ( Games, Media, Tools, Downloads ). Click Tools, and in the N's, you'll find the Editor.

You can get Arcanum, BG and ICW all on GOG.COM, DRM free and cheap right now. You can play all of them on Windows 7 by following some of the forum instructions there. Cheers.

If you lost the physical copies and your computer died, you would be out of luck. With Steam or other digital services, your computer dying just means you get to redownload the software. Whether that is worth the price of the software is up to you of course.Kaldor Silverwand wrote...
I already own NWN2, MotB, NWN2 Gold, and 2 copies of SoZ. I also own the Mac version of NWN2. What advantage would there be for me to purchase NWN2 Platinum (now $17.99 I believe) on Steam? I know nothing about Steam and the "About Steam" section of their website doesn't really say anything about how it works or why it would be any better than owning physical copies.

I have to admit, I don't know that Steam would have been my preferred choice of digital distribution. I had to make an account to purchase, make another to post in the forums there and one more for contacting support. I dunno, sounds kind of overcomplicated. Wouldn't one name, one email and one account be just as useful to do all that? Seems to work on every other site I've ever been to. Ever.
Still, all you new arrivals to NWN2 and to these forums because of NWN2 on Steam, welcome.

Same happened with NWN2 so I'm really glad that this came to be.
Now my question is, will Bioware / Obsidian / Atari think about releasing other D&D related games on steam?
I would really love if Bioware decided to put NWN 1 + expansions on there as well. I had the original game (I think it had a map and the manual was REALLY nice for games back in the days) but getting expansions for it was a pain in the ass.

Why wait? Diamond Edition is $9.99 on GoG.com & has no DRM.

I just bought NWN2 as well off steam. I used to play a lot of NWN. I loved playing the user-made mods. My favourite was Lone Wolf. Could anyone recommend me a similar module/s for NWN2?
Go to the Modules forum. There is already a thread on this topic underway.

Let's just say that GoG.com has something in those aspects for me that makes me less inclined to purchase it.
My uncle goes to various markets each week though and said he saw some old games including ''nwn or something of the like'' so there's a chance that he might pop up with the expansions / Diamond edition sooner or later.
Besides, having purchased nwn2's expansions now lets me play that for a while so it's not like im in a hurry.
There's a client that comes with steam, you can play Offline and the games should work fine. (Steam will detect you are not connected to the internet and you can also decide to play offline yourself by pressing the proper button.)Kaldor Silverwand wrote...
Seems like steam is more than just a downloading service. People talk about running the game within steam or running the steam version. What does that mean? Can you play independently of an Internet connection or are steam versions only usable while connected to the steam website or running some kind of steam client?
You do need to launch most games through the Steam client, but imo this is not that much of a problem, since to download the games you already need steam installed in the first place, and it is not imposing any ''cumbersome'' restrictions. (again IMHO) I just see it as a multi-game launcher / online store with a community side to it.

Steam basically functions as a store, an IM program, a form of DRM, an updater, and a few other things all in one gigantic package.
You will always need to run the game in Steam, however it does not matter if you are online or not, as long as you have logged in previously at least once on that computer, offline mode SHOULD work, and you should be able to play your games while offline no problems. You will of course be missing out on the updates, the friends list, and a few other things, but othert then that, there are no issues.
One of the nice things about Steam is that there is no physical copy of the game, you have no discs you need to install, or things you have to fuff around with to get everything set up, all you need to do is download the game from your library, go do something while it downloads, and once its done, it will be all ready to go. And as it will always download the most updated version, you'll usually be able to get around pesky problems that usually keep you from playing older games.
If the game happens to get a patch, it will automatically start patching the game for you, no need to tell it to do so, and no need to go digging around the internet to find the patch and install it correctly, it all works nice and smooth, which is a huge change from fumbling around the internet after an install, trying to find version 1.1 so you can install 1.2 which is needed to get the game working enough with your Nvidia 8800.
And yes, I know many of the old games are on GoG, and in fact own all of them, I'd just also like them on Steam, as an added measure of insurence. GoG is nice, but its still very small, and its future is still somewhat shaky. Steam/Valve probably make several million/billion every day, Steams future is assured. Also its just very convienent to download things off Steam, while its kind of a pain to go set up the GoG downloader every time I want to play those games.

I don't know what your beef with GoG.com, but they have none of the issues you just erroneously listed. Silly to spout off when you obviously don't know what you are talking about.

Main ones I've noticed are the quickcast while polymorphed thing and the random teleporting back sometimes when clicking to move.
Still, this ''latest version'' I'm playing right now has improved a lot over the few patches that I've experienced, so it's still a step for the better. (I never completed it when I had it after it just came out due to the utterly crappy performance on a relatively new system)
(There's still a specific mage robe I like better in the old NWN though, it had more vivid colors compared to NWN2 and it looked slightly better with the way armor design was handled in that game. lol)
---offtopic---
You obviously failed to grasp anything within that post. I do not have any beef with GoG.com nor did I list any specific issues, so I wonder what issues I ''erroneously'' listed. I'm not even spouting off, I simply mentioned that I am less inclined to buy the game because of ''some vague stuff here''. (I'm thinking of the connotative definition here since you seem to be acting antagonistic towards me)DM Heatstroke wrote...

So I'd like you to state *exactly* what ''issues'' I had with GoG.com, and where I am wrong. And I'm talking about specifics here. Because you're making quite the claim here.
So what *is* wrong with the payment method, OS compatibility and method of distribution according to me?
edit: Made post smaller. / inverted order to keep off-topic on the lower side.
