Noob is getting his rear kicked quite a bit

Seasons greetings everyone!  I'm brand new to DA:O, and am blown away by it, although I'm getting frustated by my lack of sucess in random and quest related encounters...  I'm currently a 8th level rogue traveling with Morrigan, Alistair, and Leliana, and am trying to do the Denerim quest set and am getting CRUSHED by these bandits... 

I'm concerned that i may be under leveled, so is there more I could be doing to "train"/level up? Move around the map and do any and all random encounters for a few hours?  Any help is appreciated...,

Did you start with Redcliffe and the Mages' tower? If not, go there. Save Orz and Denerim for later.

First off, check your tactics. That's the circle that looks like a crosshairs at the top of your screen.

Opinions vary on this, but what almost everyone agrees on is that the very first tactic for everyone in your party should read "Health-Self

Second, in regards to health poultices. To make them you need someone who knows herbalism, flasks, elfroots and distillation and concentration agents. Lesser health poultices require only elfroot and flasks and are therefore cheap to make. Bodahn and the bartender at the Gnawed Noble Tavern sell unlimited flasks and agents. The bartender is cheaper. Master Varathorn in the Brecilian Forest sells unlimited elfroots. Depending upon your origin and attitude he may be snotty towards you and refuse to sell. Completing a quest for the benefit of the Dalish will soften him up a bit. Morrigan is likely your herbalist. Have her make 99 lesser health poultices.

Third, the gangers will try to mob you and your friends. You will be surrounded and have arrows coming in at you, which can be bad. Try moving you and your party off to one side, so as to break line of sight with the archers.

Fourth, while none of them directly apply to your situation, Soteria has some excellent videos of how to fight in Dragon Age. Check 'em out!

Fifth, also about tactics. Alistair is best suited to getting everyone to attack him. He needs to have excellent armour. The best you can give him. He needs to have his tactics set to using shield wall and annoy at all times. He doesn't especially need the best weapons. Leliana needs to be set to fight 'ranged' and equipped with the best bow possible. If she has it, try setting her to use suppressing fire. If not then either defensive fire or rapid fire. Set her target as the same as yours. Morrigan needs to be hexing her little heart out. Sleep is an excellent spell for her. She starts with frost weapons. That should be active. Assuming your rogue is a dual wielder, then he or she should be standing behind the person you want to attack. Backstabs are gold for rogues.

Do your best to have Morrigan equipped with Mind Blast and Cone of Cold. These will come in handy with most encounters. Take your time until you get used to tactics, but taking out archers and mages first usually helps alot. Make sure you have plenty of health potions as well.

Wow, good info. My tatics screen is pretty empty, will definetly utilize that... As far as AoE spells, I need to be a little more careful on Morrigan's level ups as spell progression ain't like DnD. Thanks for the responses so far!

The Denerim bandits are pretty tough encounters. If you're new to the game, you might go do an ally or quest or two to level up before taking on the mobs. Giving your mage an area-of-effect spell like Sleep or Fireball to use on the archers will make them much easier.

In general, make sure everyone is set to take a health poultice at 50% health. I also set the mage to heal ally at 75% health. The simple heal spell recharges pretty quickly so I find that this works pretty well to make sure people aren't dying while your attention is elsewhere.

I second the healing potions/heal spell advice. I play on "Easy," so my advice may not be the best, but I find having one hand-to-hand expert set to rush archers and mages is useful. I usually use Alistair (his shield abilities protect him from arrows and his Templar skills are good vs. mages), Dog or me -- dual wielding rogue. It's good to keep mages stunned so they can't cast, so have Alistair bash the heck out of them or use rogue attacks like dirty fighting + poison followed by a backstab. If you are a hand-to-hand rogue, you can also attack whoever is in your mage's face. That way you will protect your healer and also be more likely to be behind your opponents. Set Morrigan to use Mind Blast if attacked hand to hand. And don't let your allies run into Morrigan's cone of cold. It sucks.

Just to reinforce what's been said about healing, I found it absolutely necessary to have at least one good herbalist. Depending on the difficulty level you're playing, either you're a good strategist (which I'm not) or you're going to burn potions like there's no tomorrow (which I did). :P

Another simple measure that can help at this early stage is to take whomever has the best poison skill in your party and have them make some simple grenades. These can also be a big help when you run into groups like these bandits who love to cluster their archers together.

P.S. But remember, whoever is going to throw the grenades also needs to have 1 pt in poison making.
