This is my second playthrough of Mass Effect, my first one being a year ago (On a different system. I read that first playthroughs are limited to 50), and I have some questions.. I'm currently using Default Shepherd for this playthrough then importing him to use on Mass Effect 2. Problem is, I'm not exactly sure what skills I should invest in. I'm a soldier class, Shock Trooper specialization, and I paragon. I prefer Snipers and Assault Rifles for the most part and I'm level 22.. Here are my skills.. Its also worth mentioning I'm not the best at combat in ME1 (I'm great in ME2) so I tend to put more points into defensive skills. I'm also playing on Normal difficulty.

Shepherd- Soldier
Pistol (4/12) For Marksman
Shotgun (4/12) For Carnage
Assault Rifle (9/12) My preferred weapon
Sniper Rifle (4/12) My other preferred weapon
Combat Armor (9/12)
First Aid (0/12) Garrus uses First Aid
Assault Training (5/12)
Fitness (5/12)
Shock Trooper (3/12)
Charm (6/8) <-- Not sure how I should be investing in this... I just put points in when I feel like it.
Intimidate (1/6) <-- Auto Level up keeps suggesting this. I don't need both Charm and Intimidate, do I?
Spectre Training (4/12)

Also, I like to use Garrus and Wrex as my other guys. Not sure about their skills either..

Wrex- Krogan Battlemaster
Assault Rifles (5/12)
Shotguns (5/12)
Combat Armor (8/12)
Fitness (4/12)
Warp (7/12)
Throw (3/12)
Barrier (7/12)
Stasis (1/12)
Krogan Battlemaster (5/6)

Garrus- Turian Agent
Assault Rifles (6/12)
Sniper Rifles (5/12)
Tactical Armor (7/12)
Assault Training (6/12)
Decryption (7/12)
Damping (4/12)
First Aid (6/12)
Electoronic (Not unlocked yet)
Turian Agent (3/12)

So basically I just want advice about which skills are the best.. Thanks for reading and help is greatly appreciated!

I usually prefer to max my weapon skill (usually just use 1 weapon trough the whole playtrough) and I also love to have decryption maxed (just for the sake of decrypting computers & containers) also unlocking the medium / heavy armor depending on character is really good to aim for, as for leveling charm / intimidiate I suggest you just level up only one of those, however your maxium amount of points in those are limited to your renegade / paragon status so if you want more renegade points you need to make renegade decisions, as for wrex I love throw (or any other biotic ability that makes your enemy fly) warp is also very usefull on stronger enemys, shouldnt affect much however on normal difficulty since even insanity is way too easy so dont worry too much about messing up the build :)

This build should be pretty easy to salvage. Focus on Fitness, Shocktrooper, Assault Training and Sniper rifle and you'll have a completely functional build. For Wrex focus on Fitness and Shotgun and he'll be pretty much unstoppable. As for Garrus, you should aim for 9 points in decryption and electronics. That will give you master sabotage and overload, as well as letting you unlock any locked item.

Just, out of curiousity how many points have you actually spent on charm and how many are points from paragon/spectre.  You can get 3 free for maxing out your paragon bar and 1 free when you become a spectre.

I spent 5 points on charm. The one point in intimidate and one of the charm points is from becoming a Spectre.

For Soldiers, the biggest items are Fitness for max immunity, Armor for defense, weapons pick one or two( Assault rifles and Sniper Rifles are what I like on soldier) Soldier skill to become upgraded version later at Luna and Assault training. If you are going to run only one time through ME1 before importing and want to be able to make all the checks you will have to spend around 8 point in either charm or intimadate(four from max paragon/renegade and 8 spent maxes skill). Once you have maxed all these then you can spend points where you like but these are the critical ones to max.

Wrex you want Max immunity and Krogan battle master, plus either SG or ARs maxed, Barrier, armor, throw 8-12, Warp 5-9, and totally skip Stasis except for maybe a point if you have one extra(but it isn't worth it on non-upgraded adepts).

Garrus will need decryption, electronics, AR, Turian agent, assault training, armor and dampening maxed if possible. Sniper rifles and any medical only as you feel like and have the extra points.

Immunity is the best skill in the game for Soldier, it totally rocks almost to the point of breaking the game, because it reduces the amount of damage taken.

Barrier(wrex) is also great for damage reduction but isn't as good as immunity because it doesn't do anything for melee damage or poison spit(thresher and rachni).

Assault training ups damage and has the ability to reset cool-downs which is handy.

Armor means heavier armor for these guys(ie less damage) and also reduces damage taken.

Warp(for Wrex) increases the damage taken by an enemy it is used on.

Weapon skills, increase weapon damage and control of weapons.

Decryption skill opens things and damages enemies and increases damage taken.

Electronics skill opens things, increases shields, increases repair of Mako, damages enemies and overheats weapons which means they can't shoot at you.

Dampening stuns enemies, prevents power usage, and either reduces cooldowns of tech, or increases radius of tech damage.

I almost never use medical skills, but I have heard you can do some great things if you have a bunch of characters with the skill, but I never need it.

Looks good, as long as your playing on verteran or below, most important thing is to have fun with your build. Your build definitely looks like fun, level every weapon/sill, so you have many options. Different story if you want to carry your gamer over to a New Game though..

Nah even a moderately good build is fine for a new game+, you carry over all of your equipment, like spectre x guns and colossus armor. Plus you can relevel you team mates. Soldier can afford to spend a few points on charm/intimidate. As long as you have the basics in place.
