I'm going to start a vanguard soon, but I haven't played as vanguard since before the realease of the firepower pack. Before iirc, I used the eviscerator and took assault rifle training, but I'd prefer a much more agressive style. I want to take the claymore, but then I'll be alot weaker long range, and I know for a fact the geth shotgun covers pretty much any range. I've never tried the scimitar, so that is also an option. Can anybody give any recomendatios?

Edit: Forgot to add, should I take assault rifle, snipers, or the Claymore?

There is no "best" merely personal preference.

I go with Eviscerator and AR training.

This.

I do take Claymore every single time. I do not think I am weak at long range at all - first of all, "long range" fights are very, very rare, and when I encouter them I simply use Warpbombs/Locust. I am glad I picked the Claymore the first time around, made me realize I can Charge almost any enemy's position - no need to worry about range.

In any case, I wouldn't worry about range - that's what charge is for. For those you can't reach, you've got at least a pistol or the locust.

I like the Evi and Scim for my Vanguard. But others have said, the shotguns in this game really are all good in their own way.

For bonus weapons, I usually take something to fill a gap in my Shep's weapon capabilities, cos I'ma "full-spectrum-warrior" kind of guy.. in this case, I like to go with Sniper training.

Depends what YOU consider best, all shotguns are beastly so if you decide to ignore the Claymore you still get a fair selection of 'em to choose from as well as having an additional weapon on your back with either AR or SR training chosen so you're not really losing out whatever the choice.

I think I might go for Claymore, but for "range," I mean for bosses and enemies on moving platforms, eg. Scions, Human Reaper, but I suppose they are few.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.

I used the Scimitar and went with the Viper. Both are very forgiving. :)

The shotguns are very balanced, so there really is no "best" choice. I've done a playthrough with Eviscerator, Scimitar, and Claymore. Claymore is my favorite.

The only shotgun I don't like is the Katana, but that's a personal thing.

The only real long range for a vanguard are the ones where they are on some balcony you can't get to. Many of those can be flat out ignored or if necessary taken out with SMGs and pistols. My preference is the claymore, though I have seen some awesome things with the viper sniper rifle. It is absurd at stripping armor.

I usually go with the Claymore. It just makes a very satisfying "BLAM" sound when you fire it. :D It's not really an optimal choice on harder difficulty settings though, I expect.

Be aware, this video takes place at the end game but does not involve any actual story elements. So I hesitate to call it spoilers, but just in case. The warning is here.

Vanguard + Claymore + Stasis = Scion death.

This is not necessarily to bill the Claymore as superior since any shotgun could preform up to par in this situation. It was merely to highlight how insanely powerful a Vanguard can be and to recommend Stasis as your bonus power. Suffice it to say, you need not worry about Scions. They die pretty fast.

Hmm I have Reave at the moment, but that makes me think I'll change to stasis.

I'm using the Geth shotgun (which is overpowered imo, so I might just switch to eviscerator), but I don't really see much need for the claymore at the moment, so I might go for the Viper.

This.

I personally go Claymore [shotgun] every sinle time but that's a personal choice.  If I didn't do a shotgun I personally would go with Sniper Rifle Training.   AR is also a possibility if you have all the weapon downloads but I prefer my Sniper Rifle compared to the AR options.

Eviscerator is awesome. I'm pretty much certain I'll just toggle between that and the geth shotgun and take sniper training.

I always goes with the eviscerator and the viper, the perfect combo for me, the only two weapons I ever need for my vangaurd.

Claymore isn't optimal SG < Insanity - it's the only shotgun capable of one-shotting enemies on Insanity whereas the Katana, Eviscerator and GPS can only one-shot at easier difficulty settings.

Claymore really shines on Insanity, BOOM :)

True, but it's not great long range, and the eviscerator has 3 shots per clip, where as the claymore only has 1. So you can charge with the eviscerator, fire a shot, melee, then fire two more.

Range isn't a problem for Vanguards; pressing the Charge button will get em into perfect shotgun position B)

BTW, Claymore isn't bad at short-medium range; one shot will strip defenses (normal enemies) up to 10-15 m. Eviscerator can do it too and its 3 shots/clip gives it an edge, but Claymore can easily be used to kill the Thresher Maw and the Terminator!

I suppose, but I'd just rather have the viper for enemies on playforms you can't reach, such as on the collector ship

Well that's the good thing with ME2 shotties, you can't go wrong either way; and the Viper is devastating against heavily armored foes (Harby, Scions, YMIRs, Thresher Maw, Geth Colossus etc). A hard choice, but all options are viable. Best you can do is test them all.

True I suppose, I love the viper.

By the way, those are some awesome engineer/adept videos in your signature.

Thanks, and if you haven't noticed it yet - I use all shotguns though I like Claymore best; I even modded ME2 to give my Adept and Engineer the Claymore

All of which fall to the Claymore+Inferno just as fast, with a +100 fun rating compared to Viper-ing from cover. :D
