I am going to buy Mass Effect for the PC and i have a question:
Do you must have the disk in drive to play and if you do; is there any way to avoid this with no cracks or piracy involved?

You can buy a digital download version, either from the EA Store, Steam, or Direct 2 Drive. The download size is about 7 gigs though. I got Mass Effect from D2D, since I already am set up with them. Steam seems to have better prices with sales. Just make sure you get the 1.1 and 1.2 patches for whatever version you decide to get. D2D had their own patches, so wherever you get it, get your patches there too.

Mass Effect 1 can be played without the DVD no matter what version you buy. I have the original retail version, works just fine without the disc.
ME2 retail needs the disc though. It's a royal pain in the arse. Get a digital version from Steam or D2D if you don't want to do any discswapping! I haven't tried whether i can link my ME2 key to my Steam account though - That'd be neat. Warrants some experimentation :>

Howdy Jean-Luc, I’m not sure about the patches for non-U.S. content.
Sad to hear you are limited to access content because of your internet speeds. That is the primary reason I don’t look favorably on DLC content. Not that I’m against adding more to games, it’s just that millions of people, like you, all over the world (here in the States too) are deprived of some of the best gaming experiences, whilst companies like Bioware only see a fraction of the sales-that-could-have-been.
Well, someone who’s running ‘round under your skies, on that side of the world might know best about which patches to use.
