Yeah, see, I'm in my mid-thirties. So my gaming experiences -
There's only about a decade between us. I'm in my very early 20s.
when I was a kid? Almost no one I knew (save some very wealthy families) had more than one tv. If they wanted to play the Atari 2600 or the NES, they had to use the one tv. While the consoles were put away when not in use, everyone I knew would pull the console out to the fullest length of the cord from the tv and then sit at about the fullest length of the controller cord (though sometimes we'd have to pull separate stools or folding chairs up as the cords wouldn't reach most of the furniture.)
We didn't have consoles when I was younger, but my family immigrated to North America. So I grew up on games like Prince of Persia, Lemmings, Commander Keen and various other DOS era hits.
When we came here, we had a small 20'' SDTV, but by the time my parents bought me a playstation (my first console) they had bought a larger TV and moved the SDTV in my room.
College age? Dorms are very small, so you could put the tv at one end and stand at the other and you'd be lucky to be 6 feet from the screen. But college apartments? The tv in the living room of the apt had the consoles hooked up (if anyone had "gaming" systems in their bedrooms it was their computers)....
I've never stayed in a dorm. I've lived with roomates mostly. We have a large 60'' in our living room, but I've taken a larger room for a bigger % of the rent, so I have a reasonable amount of space for my PC & a TV.
Overall, I think kids living with their parents and college dorm / very small apartment people are probably the "tv 2 feet from my face" console people.
You can file roomates during college under the same umbrella. But I'm Canadian, and our two largest univerities (Toronto & McGill) are in large urban downtown areas, so living off-campus with roomates is potentially more common than would be in America, with most universities in small university towns.
There are, I'm sure, a sizable number of exceptions to my anecdotal experiences and extrapolations - but, suffice to say, I don't think it's as weird as you make it sound, In Exile. Are you living at home with your family?
No, roomates a little ways off-campus. All of my friends either commute from home or live in a similar situation, though, so my experience may be somewhat limited.

Will this be any different quality-wise from what's already available in DAO through use of standard Nvidia display drivers? Just curious why this would be considered dx11 feature along with soft particles and such, hdri etc when all these been around for a while ... or when you talk of these improvements, is that in the sense of "features for both dx10/11 as opposed to dx9"?Andreas Papathanasis wrote...

Most devs seem to use tesselation and DX11 on environments, but Aliens Vs. Predator had the alien models fully tesselated as I recall.
Really? I guess i should try and see if my new budget dx11 card (Geforce GTS 450) can handle it. Metro doesn't want to work in DX11 mode for some reason

Just a short question: we've seen screenshots from the consoles and screenshots from the PC which looked a lot like the console screenshots - presumably DX9.
So, I would like to know, when can we expect to see DX11 screenshots, to see how much the added graphical capabilities of DX11 cards bring to DA2 visually? :innocent:
As we're still working on the DirectX 11 features, there's no set date when we know we'll be able to release screenshots. I'd expect that to be sometime in February.
About the general discussion on what features we'll be supporting - Dragon Age 2 will be taking a somewhat different approach than previous DirectX 11 games. We're primarily looking into more advanced lighting and shadowing effects that will better show off the existing base art and improve the atmosphere of the game (i.e. spell effects going off in darker cave levels should be more impactful). We'll be complementing that main feature with other smaller scale technical features including screen space ambient occlusion, soft particles, tessellated terrain.
Those features won't be required to enjoy the game and they obviously don't affect gameplay at all, but we're aiming to offer a better visual experience for people who invested on DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 hardware. If after the game is released you need a microscope to spot a difference between the DX9 and 11 versions, then we'll have failed
what about texture resolution on pc?

I'd imagine they're actually working something like the ambient occlusion into the engine for DX11 as opposed to having the Nvidia drivers simply force it on there. SO maybe it will work better/smoother since they're designing the game with stuff like that in mind.
But I imagine most of the DX11 "upgrades" are really in comparison to DX9 and the consoles.

I would like to know more about this topic. I want to know how much better my gaming PC with a GTX 480 is going to look over the consoles
Hopefully alot better in ambient lighting at the very least. And obviously if they use tessellation it should look even better. Personally, and this really isn't meant as a knock on console users as I have one myself, but I don't know why anyone would even want to play this type of title on a console to begin with, unless they absolutely have to.

Without getting into a platform war at all - because no amount of tesselation can compare with the groove in my couch that has so comfortably formed around my bottom. Different strokes for different folks.

The comment made about the spells going off in a darker cave level sounds really good. The thing I hated about the Deep Roads in Origins was its supposed to be this deep underground road system and yet its mysteriously lit up like an amusement park. I'd love it if the lighting in DA2 actually makes more sense so that maybe you fire off a fireball in a dark cave and can see it dynamically light up things.
For sure, it would certainly at the very least add to the game's overall atmosphere for me anyway.

That's just a question of organisation. I use the same groove for both PC and PS3 games

lol, i'm just bowing out because I didn't want that statement to lead to platform wars. My point was simply, sometimes there are external variables that have nothing to do with hardware or performance that contribute to why or how people enjoy gaming.
I can only assume that is money and not knowing anything about a pc..

I asked mainly because this effect has been implemented in various games for quite a while now (like, literally years) It's not very complicated, either and pretty generic so that's why it was even possible to include it in the drivers... so that got me curious if that list of improvements is specifically for dx11 (as it's not required to pull it off) or if it includes things that will work with dx10 as well.Brockololly wrote...

that comparision you sent is a lie.. for example take modern warfare 2.. it was created with dx9 and it looks even better than the dx10 in those pictures.. or take world of warcraft cataclysm.. it supports dx11 but it looks worse than the dx10 in those pics... its not what program they use. its how they use it.. take crysis for example, i still prefere those dx10 graphics over bfbc2's dx11's graphics which also reduces atleast about 8-10 fpsIf you want general examples of the difference, this is better.
But I'm not looking for a general comparison, I want to know about DA2.
