If I import an ME2 file to hit the level 30 achievement will the file I imported be gone forever and I'm only left with the level 30 file? Or will I have two separate files? Level 30 and level X?

There are no stupid questions...

You should have 2 separate 'careers' if you import from ME2 to ME2.
