Witness Gaxkang!

*Minor Spoiler*

Any trick to beating this guy (end of the Unbound quest chain?)

His AoE life drain (and occassional Cone of Cold) is really killing me. It's impossible to avoid, because you fight him in such a tiny, tiny room. I have a hard time out-dps'ing his life drain. (What kind of damage is it? I've rolled in using Spirit/Ice balms, but he still trucks me.)

There's a spell (that I do not have) to keep enemies from healing (this seems like the only fight I've run into where I really missed it.)

Lock him up with whatever you can, cone of cold, force field, crushing prison, shield bash, pinning shot....there are lots of them and no doubt whatever party configuration you are running you must have a couple of them. use them in order whenever he stops moving, the more you have the better since he will inevitably resist some.

If you have a weapon with a 'stun' rune in it that could help a lot too.

Seems to me this belongs in the spoiler section. At least precede it with an alert because it actually did give away something when I read it.

First off, if Gaxkang seems difficult, well, he's supposed to be! This is /highly/ optional content, and thus a good place to sneak in an extremely tough fight; after I beat Gaxkang, my character record changed "Most Powerful Enemy Killed" from High Dragon to Gaxkang. Don't let his non-enormous size trick you.

Not that it sounds like you're under the impression that Gaxkang isn't difficult, mind.

Looks like you're level 15 now; frankly, you might just need to wait a bit before you're ready to challenge him. I beat him, barely, at level 17, with a high-DPS melee rogue, Sten, Wynne, and Leliana (at normal difficulty on PC). Leliana and the PC both had the ranger specialization, so they each summoned a wolf to assist. (Bears tend to get caught up in small spaces.) The PC and Sten stabbed at Gaxkang from opposite sides (so that the PC was getting backstab bonuses most of the time) while the wolves nipped at Gaxkang as well. Wynne just healed Sten as often as Heal could recharge, and cast Rejuvenation (health regen in combat) whenever Heal was cooling down. Every few cycles of Heal, she would manage a Group Heal to deal with any AOE damage that Gaxkang put out, particularly from his Cone of Colds. And I'm sure I went through a bunch of health poultices, too.

Oh, and Leliana stood in the corner with her bow, being mostly ineffective. She was basically there for the wolf, and also just because she happened to be in the party when I stumbled across the door.

The fight probably took 45 minutes in the real world, including pause time -- very five steps forward, four steps back, because of Gaxkang's healing. Wynne went through at least ten lesser lyrium potions -- I had a lot of lyrium dust, so she just kept crafting them as needed. I think Sten was only killed once, but I was able to use Revival to get him back up.

The biggest danger, I found, was Wynne getting caught in the Cone of Cold blast due to the smallness of the space. Make sure that wherever your tank is standing, Wynne's not in a line with him and Gaxkang.

Good luck!

It's a little hard because he dispells fairly often, first position your tanking character away from the rest of your party so you don't all get nailed by cone of cold. Then you can try to debuff him, but he dispells pretty often. I kept cycling between glyph of warding on Alistair, then after Gax dispells that I'd cycle between vulnerability, misdirection, and death hex. If you get death hex up right after he uses his dispell you'll get a lot of damage in on him.

yes i also used Glyph of Neutralization , did the trick, didn't last the whole time but enough to help. (i almost didn't take that spell either, but thought it's not 4th level for nothing!)

I managed to move him. I can't remember how, but I got him to move to one end of the room, and set my ranged up on the other side. Thus the life drain was only hitting two characters. If you can get him to move its much easier.

Thanks for the advice all. It's tough to move him because he sits right in the narrow hall between the two rooms.

Having just killed High Dragon, I completely believe Gaxkang is tougher. Good to see that there's a few really, really tough fights in-game.

As with all dragons, I beat Gaxkang on the first try (normal mode on 360) but that's mostly because of a huge amount of luck. All the battles were really long. Can't wait to solo him ;)

Drag him to the rear of the hut where your other group members can shoot/heal from outside of his aura. Also, as with all bosses in every game, face him away from your group.

What does he drop? A Ring of Power perchance?

Killed him with this party:

1st Party:
1. Warrior Tank ( Sword+Shield ) = PC
2. Warrior Damage Dealer ( 2H Weapon ) = Sten
3. Mage Healer = Wynne
4. Mage AOE/Damage Dealer/Crowd Control = Morrigan

2nd Party:
1. Damage Dealer Warrior/DPS ( 2H Warrior ) = PC
2. Warrior Tank ( Sword+Shield ) = Alistair
3. Archer/Bard = Leliana ( she comes very handy because of her lockpicking abilities )
4. Mage Healer = Wynne

Tips:
- Hold him checked all the time ( magics or techniques ).
- Use Buffs and debuffs ( if you have it in your party ).
- Make Healing your second priority, specially for your tank.
- Use your TANK. Threaten, then taunt. Just let him focus on your tank.

Use Magebane or better yet, Concentrated Magebane. It will eat his mana pool real quick and once he's got no spells he's easy.

Glyph of Neutralization trivializes this fight. It wasn't difficult, just lengthy as he has quite a large health pool.

The Ring of Kan, more probable.

He drops a sword/shield. Both quite good. The sword is warrior only.

Myeah. Not seeing what is so hard with beating Gaxkang..

I breezed through the fight (about 2 minutes or so) with the following:

Alistair at level 16, Blood dragon plate, defensive build.

Shale, 16, offensive line (pulverizing blows +)

Wynne - just healing and staff damage, nothing else (well - buffing too - whatever the preset healer tactics do)

Me - Arcane warrior, level 16, warden armour at rank 5&6...shield+sword..

I just cast the Telekinetic weapons and pretty much just wailed on him. Yes - it was a bit annoying that he stuns/terrors/freezes/drains you for so many times, but on the whole, I had no real difficulties that a lyrium potion + group heal, or a healing poultice could not solve. He went down very fast, it seems.

On the whole, for me he was slightly harder than Flemeth (same levels for the party), as it was a small space (not that it matters with 3 meelees dishing out the damage) and he had nice spell selection.

On the whole, it was a very fun fight, I agree, but not necessarily hard. So far it has been the hardest boss though (besides tackling Uldred without any lyrium potions and 2 mages.. that was fun.)

I guess it helped that essentialy I had 3 tanks and a healer in the party - AW with the incredible defenses, alistair with good gear, and shale with 40 constitution. Old Gaxy did come close to knocking some of the party members out a few times, but nothing I would call hard.

Oh, and yes - push the Gaxkang into the even smaller doorway, and place wynne as far as possible, otherwise it is game over .

Though it seems I will change my mind when I try to play as a dwarf warrior.

Normal difficulty with the latest game patch.

P.S.

Have you really found him to be that hard?
