So sorry if that is a bit spoilerific, but I was incredulous that the game seemed to be forcing me to go down a chosen path by putting an impossible opponent. I got wacked a few times in a row and put the game aside thinking when I came back I was going to have to go down that chosen path.

It is a fight you're intended to lose, yes. A big hint would be the fact when you do lose it, the game doesn't give you the usual "game over" screen but simply moves on with the story Posted Image

Ser Cautherine is hard in her first incarnation (with like 10-12 archers), the one you are "supposed" to lose, so your friends can spring you from prison.

Gaxkang was a more creative/interesting fight, though. Even if it does come largely down to positioning and endurance. (Assuming you don't abuse forcefield/manaclash.)

With my party of Lyle (dwarf, warrior, sword+shield), Morrigan, Alistair, and Leliana, I managed to knock my way through him at level 19 when I found him. Morrigan's Cone of Cold was the key, and I had her doing Group Heals, too. Otherwise, it was just me bashing away at him with Alistair, since Leliana was knocked out fairly early on (I had her using dual-blades at the time). The trick is simply to outlast him, I think. Essentially, my own healing against his vs. my damage against his balanced out in my favour. Without either good healing or good melee damage dealing, I'd have been toast and have had to come back later.

Tough, but not frustrating. 'Twas a solid battle.

Again, can someone please tell us where he is?

In a "quaint hovel" in one of the back alleys of Denerim. You will not be able to open the door before you have retrieved certain notes on dead adventurers dispersed across various dungeons in the game.

You mean the "Private documents" papers I find sometimes?

Ya, I was pretty sure they wanted us to play out that scenario.  What is strange is that I'm normally a completionist and want to finish all areas in a game completely.  But for some reason, that story arc was very unapealing to me.  I don't know why since I only just tried a couple minutes after been thrown in the slammer from both the rescuer and rescuee perspective.  I just couldn't get interested in it.

But I'm glad your journal still reflects if you win the fight and decide not to be taken into custody.  Its a shame I had to off that NPC, but I was really disliking the game taking away the hero status of the um, hero ;)  and also the choice.  Tough decisions is one thing, impossible decisions is something I was never a fan of.  At that point in the game, I just felt that the character should have been at a level where loosing a fight to an underling was too hard a pill to swallow.  Maybe if it happened much earlier in the game I would have been more okay with it.

edit: oh, and it was Allistar who killed Ghaxkang, so I will never know which is considered the tougher apponent by the game.

There is one very easy way to kill Gaxkang: Use manaclash. If you use the +magic damage curse on him before he dies instantly. If he doesn't resist.

I just saw a video of an arcane warrior mage soloing his ass without ever dropping below 90% health

You all must be making a big deal out of him , or the guy who did the video did it on casual lol

So ANYWAY

What are the stats on the sword he drops and the gloves in his chest that I saw in the video?

TELL ME NAO!

I don't remember exactly what went down with my PC v. Gaxkang, but the fight itself was home to one of my most embarassing in game moments. I did this fight after Fort Drakon (almost right after) and didn't realize that the crappy guard sword I had to equip on Alistair was still on him. So the entire fight I'm wondering why Alistair is doing crap damage (he had Starfang usually equipped).

Major face palm when I found this out a few seconds after winning >.<.

I can't kill him right now and see for myself douchebag

3 of my saves are beaten and therefore can't go there ever again

The other one is a lvl 10 who he would wipe the floor with , IF I even knew how to do the quest

Yeah but... you know the thing is, Arcane Warriors are broken beyond repair. That's the point of those naked AW solo videos, really, the spec is so broken it trivializes even the most challenging encounters in the game so that's really not something to consider here.

Well I beated him just know. After reading here about him :P i was lvl 17(shield+sword), shale, Morrigan, and Wynne. No one in my group died. I am playing on normal. He was a piece of cake for me. I found Flemeth to be more chalenging for me. And now, in my stats, it's says that he was the most powerfull enemy slain. Oo

yeah and i leaves you a 1H sword. Doing 11,20 dmg + 6 to attack + 3 to dmg + 3 rune slots

Pretty dicent :P as for someone who don't have wardens keep :(

As has been mentioned already, GLYPH OF NEUTRALIZATION. I cast it under Gaxkang at the very start of the fight, and just bulldozed him - first try. Probably important to note that my party consisted of two mages (myself and Wynne) and two warriors (Alistair and Ogrehn). Good luck!

See that 1915 damage number? That's Mana Clash with Curse of Vulnerability on him.

Easiest boss in the game because of it. That basically nearly dropped him. If I wasn't lazy and put on Curse of Affliction on top of it, it would have dropped in 1 blast.

While I was level 20, I beat Gaxkang on Nightmare in about 30-40ish seconds using Curse of Misdirection and Death Hex and having my two two handed warriors (Wielding maxed out elemental Starfang and Chasind Great Maul). I barely needed to heal.

Just beat the game.. Looking on these forums for first time ( didnt want spoilers).

Didnt fight this guy, but extremly surprised to find out im not supposed to beat Ser Cautherine first incarnation. (hard difficulty)

Never did the prison side quest stuff.. Hope I didnt miss anything.

I was wondeirng why the fight was the hardest fight in the game lol.

I had to put a glyph of repulsion on the door leading to the area, throw firestorm and lightning storm down (forgot the name). Then a fireball to knock people down.

Then run down the hall to a different room. Ser cautherine resists it all , so it allows you to get her solo.

Once I isolated her solo the fight was doable once I agroed her and then used forcefield on whoever she agroed..

My first time fighting him I had mana clash on my mage and that knocked off half his health off the bat.

Second time was on my DW warrior. Party was me, Shale, Leliana, Wynn. I ran up and beat the snot out of him that time, no special strategies at all.

If you are having trouble I say go the mana clash route. Mana clash is useful in the final battle too against some of the mobs.

yeah...yeah... I beat her first time around too, I didn't realize giving up was an option.  I sorta feel the internal testers for this game dropped the ball, I 've yet to run into  a fight that challenged me at all, Gaxxkang included, I just manaclashed him and moved on, didn't even occur to me at the time that is was supposed to be the hardest encounter in the game :(

I didnt go after him until about 19. I recognized the name and hadnt even fought the high dragon yet. I just beat on him pretty hard with lelianna, my champ/beserker and altair with wynne doing mad heals. good stuff!

Well, my Gaxkang story is a tragic one. The very first time I encountered him, he bugged and didn't do anything but sit there and get beat down. I was stoked when I found him as Kangaxx from BG2 was one tough mother and I knew this fight was probably going to be the hardest in the game. Pity, I hope they fix him in the next patch to prevent this.

*Spoiler*

Well Gaxkang is definately meant to be tougher than Ser Cauthien as I've killed both of those, a certain someone else and the High Dragon and it still says Gaxkang is the most powerful foe slain.

Didn't have a problem with Gaxkang actually...my mains tend to be mages, and I usually smack him with cold and stone fist, or paralyze. Think my mage was level 18 at the time, don't remember..this is my 4th playthrough right now..heh hooked much? Hurry up with that dlc :D

I look forward trying him with an all melee party. High Dragon is my next battle, I don't think I can make it at my current level. Will the High Dragon get harder as I level or be easier at lower levels?

This is just another enemy that is hard if you don't use your mages well or don't bring mages (looking forward to trying him with a no-mage party too at some point). Between all the different paralysis spells and the various anti-caster spells this guy is a piece of cake; he is significantly easier to lock down than the high dragon because he's small and can't run very far in his hovel.
