"Well yes, that is true, though most will have some non-"Celtic" blood too."

I think y'all just claim to be celtic because it's more cool than being Anglo these days! Besides, if my last trip to London is any indication most British aren't even European :P

"it's widely understood nowadays though that waves of migration, like that of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes, have a relatively small genetic impact..."

Tell it to the Native Americans! Or the Aborigines of Australia!

If the OP wants to reconsider his historical ignorance:  actually, the elves are the Jews.

The reason I find the OP entertaining is this is precisely how the political right in the US metaphorically theorize and explain everything. Can be quite hilarious at times. Image IPB

Screaming palm, I don't suppose you noticed all the celtic nationalists who hijacked the thread to theorize and explain everything, eh? Seems it isn't only the political right in the US that's guilty of that!

good call, yes! I am infact on crack, but don't let that distract you from the matters at hand

when i say they look like indians i don't mean "red"  but more like swarthy, if you know what i mean, i think we all can agree on that most americans are swarthy

That is a good point. There main difference there, of course, is genetic isolation from spread of disease, that doesn't exist within the Old World to the same degree.

The classic archaeological example is of an an ancient skeleton found in a cave, I forget where in the UK. Wanting to work out which group he came from, they compared his DNA to modern DNA from across the UK and Ireland, only to find the closest match was a man who'd lived all his life in the village just down the road.

Oh, and Craig, the only thing "Celtic" about me is my name. "Celtic" in many ways is an artificial construction, lumping together several groups. I'm very English.

you must not know what "swarthy" means or your sample size is inexplicably tiny.

i detected your failure by googling "i think we can all agree that".

It was my mistake for posting this here. Unless you know of the part I'm talking about it's kinda pointless either way. What I had a problem with is way too specific for this forum. Sorry about that

I know excatly the part you are talking about.  The problem is you are seeing things that aren't actually there.  For one, I do not believe the Dalish have ever been slaves or if they have they broke free before any long term slavery happened.  The second thing you ignored is some of the main character's responses can question the Dalish story, which clearly shows THIS IS THE DALISH PERSPECTIVE.  Well elves, in many cases, are protrayed as pure good beigns there are several cases in this game that show they make the same mistakes humans do (I won't spoil it for anyone).  America has never conquered an empire than enslaved it's people, it quite literally has nothing to do with American history.

Obviously you are unaware of what "swarthy" means. Basically it means dark skinned - in terms of complexion.

If you are referring to "tanned" (which by no means is the majority of the US tanned) that is not the same as swarthy. Most people refer to people of the middle east as swarthy.

Just to clarify, I am an American living in the UK, I have just as much a mixture of genetics as a lot of other americans, including Native American, Irish, English, Spanish, French, Scottish, and Hungaraian, but I am by no stretch of the imagination swarthy.

I'm just saying (and i think most agree with me) that the average american look like a mixture of Pete Sampras and Barrack Obama, now there is nothing wrong with that but it's clearly swarthy. It's probably due to your mixed gene pool that dates back to the days when the first white european settlers started breeding with the indians.

You know " first we kill the men and then we breed with their women" and all that...

Humanity has a long tradition of slavery and social injustice, this is not something americans had a monopoly on. In fact the game departs from reality quite quickly, what with the Chantry actually freeing the elves from slavery some 500 years in the past (though of course they remained second class).

Either way, by that logic any mention of slavery or racial repression must be a commentary on american social injustices. Even the Witcher, a Polish game, must have been about america then (because I'm sure Poland had no social injustice of its own *grin*).

And in any case, Ferelden is very clearly a "what if" version of Anglo-Saxon England that managed to successfully rebel against the Norman/french invaders and regain its freedom. No relation to America there.

And let's face it, slavery and social oppression is a major theme in human existence, even more so in less civilised times (not that it doesn't go on today). It is only normal that we find it in medieval fiction. Indeed its absence would be rather jarring,

I thought it was more similiar to how us brits went about conquering nations and enslaving the population. You know I think we even did the seperated living area's in some places too.

I love how the OP makes some very vague comments then gets angry when no one really knows what the hell he's talking about. If you want to say the game is making social commentry point out when it's doing it, and why you think it's doing it.

Unexpected Riker facepalm caused me to fire mountain dew across my desk while attempting to breathe said liquid due to a failed dexterity check.

My keyboard and MX1000 mouse are both toast.

New keyboard and budget mouse. Anyone want to suggest a waterproof mouse for me?

America is what 500 years old...if you go all the way back to it's discovery?

How many thousands of years old is slavery and subjugation?

Umm the United States was made a country in 1776, by my math thats less then 250 years, 233 to be exact.  I'm curious as to where you got the 500 from.

Does the date October 12, 1492 sound familiar?

Psst! Don't point that out to him. It's obvious why he thinks America is 500 years old. He's from the Future.:innocent: Let us just sit here and soak in any tidbits of knowledge that he may drop due to a slip of the mind. I've heard that time traveling does that to you.^_^

In regards to the topic, did anyone else enjoy the real-life social parallels of the Mages in which super-powered beings are locked away from the general populace and threatened with death at the slightest mis-step? No more stones and persecution for you, would-be sorcerors and witches!  In DA's Circle of the Magi, you actually have power! So when someone throws a stone at you, you can throw a fireball at them in kind. Watch out for the templar though. Those Holy Smites can smart.:pinched:

I believe they are referring to the "discovery" of the "New World", which was in 1492 :P A little over 500 years ago.

"America" in this instance referring to the name of the land "discovered" rather than the United States of America. Thanks Amerigo...

Yes, I was using the term "America" loosely in that case....

Could be worse, could be named:

"The United States of Vaspucci"(sp)

I'm still pretty sure the country existed before that date. I mean people were LIVING there before 1492 so I don't think it just popped in to being because some guy bumped in to it with his boat.
