I expect a minimum of three spells per element. I disagree they have the most room for variety. In my experience one off spell effects have a higher ceiling for creativity. Blowing things up is one of the last things that springs to mind when I think of magic. Variety in elemental spells is usually limited to how they are shaped and visual appearance. A disconnected spell like sleep has a looser, more malleable theme in my opinion. Putting that aside, elemental spells are always showcased in video games so I am certain we will see several in DA2. My hope is a few of them are earth spells and that ice is less overpowered.

so out of six spell trees we know 3 which are primal, spirit and arcane. Leaving creation, entropy and....?
OR is the 6th tree one for the spec?

Posted ImagePosted ImageI agree that earth needs some serious lovin'.  According to Peter Thomas, earth spells are supposed to be good at literally knocking people around since they have high impact.

Posted ImagePosted ImageAnd that is EXACTLY why I've been asking about the number of spells.  If the top left tree is primal, and diamond-shaped icons are active abilities and hexagons are sustained (confirmed by Mike Laidlaw), and the circles are passive abilities (my guess), and the bottom two diamonds are fireball and firestorm/inferno(?), then that leaves TWO more active abilities for the entire primal school.  TWO!!!  Even if each element only got one spell, there would be one being left out.  This is why I want to know if they are in separate trees/webs or not.

Posted ImagePosted ImageI don't think force mages are going to be elementally-focused, but I could be wrong.  I can see the spells being split with two elements in one and two in the other, but I suppose we'll have to wait.  I'm sure I'll enjoy the game no matter what, but the sad thing is that this is literally the ONLY thing I'm worried about in this game.  It's driving me crazy not knowing more.

i thought of that too. So u have 2 primal trees, 1 spirit, 1 arcane, 1 entropy, 1 creation. But....i wasnt sure if the 6th tree was for the specs. Like in that vid the top right was battlemaster for carver. Sounds like a personal spec. If thats the case then the primal tree looks tiny for four elements. Unless they put earth in with creation?

All is purely speculation of course.

Posted ImagePosted ImageIf you check Peter's posts earlier in this thread, you'll see that specializations are not counted in the basic six webs.  I suspect the following:

Top Left:  Primal including Fire and (these are interchangeable) Lightning
Top Middle:  Primal including Earth and Ice (the topmost branch starts sustained which might be Rock Armor and we know that's in)
Top Right:  Entropy
Bottom Left:  Spirit
Bottom Middle:  Arcane
Bottom Right:  Creation

I could be totally wrong and probably am, but I guess we'll see.  To be honest, after examining it again, this doesn't upset me as much as it did before.  Even if each element only gets two spells each, it'll be okay as long as the spells are useful and are unique.

oh so we get more trees than our companions? Coz carvers battlemaster tree sounded heaps like a personal spec.

I really cant wait til this info is released. I dont want earth magic to be restricted to rock armor and say petrify or stonefist.

Im really impressed with fireballs new animation. Its like dragon age Z.

Posted ImagePosted ImageI share your concerns.  You've pretty much hit the nail on the head of my fears with your comment about restrictions.

I also share your love for the new animations.  I'm kind of hoping that since there are significantly less spells, each type gets a unique animation.  I figure all of the glyphs will have the same animation, for example, but it'd be neat if the glyphs and the healing spells, and the lightning spells, etc... all had unique animations.

I'm not sure if Battle Master is a spec.  I think it's the universal Warrior talent tree............

the glyph of paralysis spell looks awesome as we saw in the combat vid. Green energy, and u first see a small glyph in front of bethany then u see it further away as a trap for the incoming enemies. Looks so much more like a spell of the nature school.

The thing about spell upgrades is most likely one will be the superior choice. That is the way it works in ME 2 so I'm doubtful about dropping spells and adding upgrades and then saying the spell system has improved. What they did in ME 2 was for instance was to reduce the "spell" radius from ME 1 and then if you wanted a decent radius (on singularity for instance) in ME 2 you had to take the radius upgrade.

the battlemaster had stun, knockback and threaten. could be a generic tree i suppose. though battlemaster sounds brilliant for a spec too

ok.........so just to clarify...........each spell or ability or talent can be upgraded to make it more powerful or increase its effects?

So.......with Charge for example, we start with a "Level 1" Charge, but we can upgrade it to Level 2, 3, etc. to make it more powerful.

Same with Crushing Prison or Mind Blast...........

are all spells/talents going to be upgradeable?

Hm... Haven't seen if anyone already said this, but since it's in the video at 0:13, it probably can't hurt. Those little ability icons (in this case locked) next to the big ones are the upgrades for individual abilities. It says Requires: <string of Russian letters>, and then he hovers over the ability that's called <string of Russian letters>.

Also, they're playing Lady Gaga in the background of that video... I noticed and now I can't unnotice it...

Followers use their preferred style of weapon. Pretty sure Mike said that before. Isabella, for example, uses Dual Weapons only. This means that she wouldn't have the general tree for Archery.

haha i would love to see new spells and spell tree's and the spell the champion uses in the trailer looked epic. I think the people who posted earlyer are right and it was proberbly a demo/test build. Its cool to see the spell trees a bit though.

I always like magic but i have never used magic in DOA:O, you should have seen my poor light-armored warrior mage hehe :)

That was my guess/hope so nice to see it confirmed. I dunno how much you can say but are upgrades just number changes or can they actually really change up how the spell/talent work? So say instead of Walking Bomb then a separate Virulent Walking Bomb. The upgrade would make it into a Virulent Walking Bomb?
