Me1 Better RPG and Story, Me2 Better Shooter and Gameplay. Easy.

And Phaedon, pointless stats? Hmmm, I don't think that having more Hitpoints or better shields is pointless...

ME 2 doesnt focus that much on the main story as ME1 did, ME2 focuses more on the people youre working with and for some people the mainstory might feel like a pointless filler for the trilogy, nothing really changes in the galaxy in ME2 tho the decisions you make in ME2 could have alot of potential to influence ME3's story, as for the gameplay ME2 is maybe more beginner friendly than ME1 but also it has gotten ridden of annoyining little bits that buggered ME1, (texture bugs, loading times, messed up inventory system and for us xbox360 gamers the framerate problems) I personally liked ME2 more than ME1 in overall, the combat is alot more fun, I liked the level based shooter game it has and the biotic powers arent too overpowered anymore, and there is more content in & aviable to download for ME2 than ME1 had, still there are some things in ME1 that I miss and I hope bioware implentes those to ME3 (like bigger citys and side quest hubs) what I like to say about ME1 and ME2 in general is this: ME1 is an RPG game with shooter elemenets, ME2 is a shooter game with RPG elements

Both of these are upgradable in ME2, though.

I absolutely love Mass Effect 1 and am having a great time playing (even with all it's horrible bugs).  I enjoy the vast epic feel, the multitude of dialogue options and the long intricate storyline.  The exploration is also a blast.

However I've heard that Mass Effect 2 has lost it's vast feel, it's lost it's intricate dialogue options and now it's just a standard shooter with a very weak storyline, not even a story from what I hear just a bunch of sidequests.

Please tell me I'm wrong.

Yeah the new combat system sucks.
It's just a corridor shooter with some RPG elements.
You have to rely on indestructible couches to take cover, because Shepard dies now much faster. Everything else is just suicide, even on casual.
The overheat system was replaced with a generic ammo system, but they called them heat sinks.
Inventory is gone.

The dialog system is still like ME1, they just added some QTEs.

The story? It's about getting a new team and solving their daddy issues. And then you arr going to kill the collectors.

why are people talking like the inventory is the pinnacle of rpg
that the game without it doesn't get counted as an rpg. RPG is the dialogue and the decisions that affect the player's experience
notice all the ME2 haters have a Dragon Age Avatar

me2 is indeed not as open as me1 but what it lacks in space it compensates in detail

also check this out from the overlord dlc

I never noticed that before, actually. Not that it means anything anyway.

it means that pure or classic RPG system lovers like DA don't like the changes made to me2 thinking it's not an  RPG anymore

That description is a bit exaggerated but it's not too far from the truth.

Sounds to me like you really love Mass Effect 1. I'm the same and I was slightly disappointed with ME2.
But it's perfectly possible to like both games.

All in all, yes, ME2 was prefered by most reviewers and gamers, read a review not the random rant of a customer.

Why would anyone take a so called porfessional review serious?
They need to rely on the ads by the game industry, therefore negative reviews for bioware games are very unlikely.

Then you should find a better review site/magazine, because not all work that way.

This!

I never got what Inventory's supposed to have to do with an RPG.
In fact, to me all the fumbling around with the Inventory gets in the way of enjoying my character and the story, which is the true essence of Role Playing Games.

But it's a question of personal taste. Some people prefer ME1, some ME2, and some enjoy both.

While the main story is not as compelling as ME1's, the recruitment and loyalty missions are extremely diverse in setting and mood and the side quests are better conected and don't recycle the same two bases over and over again. The world is much more believable now: the Normandy's got beds, toilets and garbage cans, the colonies have lounge and sleeping areas, lawnmowers and other details that make you believe that people could actually live there. Planet scanning sucks, but so did driving the Mako uphill.

What scared the OP away is the vocal minority, which we as a community allow to exist, and make us look bad.

Sure, I'd rate ME2 a 9.5 (which is my favourite game) and ME a 9.

Isn't this the same guy who was spamming the forum with topics about that bug with the scientists in some sidequest in ME1?

Liking ME1 and hating 2 means that players loved Mass Effect for the wrong reasons

i don't consider it about gameplay at all despite me 2 having a better shooter mechanic

it's about everything else other than gameplay just like Shinannigan said

so i would rate me1 9.5 and me2 also 9.5

i didn't give them ten cuz nothing is perfect

The short answer to the OP is:

Yes ME2 is a great game, yes it has improved on combat and production values over ME1.

However, ME2 has zero sense of vast universe like there was in ME1.

The galaxy map is a joke, planet exploration has been removed completely. Squad armor is gone. Immersion elements like elevators, docking bays and banter have been also completely removed, except for very limited instances of squad chatter.

Having said this, ME2 is absolutely worth playing, you should buy it and see for yourself. ME1 had the issue of some bugs and suffering from things that any first game in a franchise may suffer from.

ME2 remedied this by increasing production values drastically and smoothing out bugs and fps etc.

However, ME2 then made the mistake of taking out all the little things that made ME1 great, plus taking out the big thing of Planet exploration.

So yeah, ME2 is more about characters and fleshed out side quests, with little to no emphasis on a vast universe feel or exploration.

but again, get it cuz its a good game.

Appropriate for you.  There is no appropriate rating, only personal preference.

Aw come on man, thats kinda harsh.

Id say 9/10 ME1
          6.8/10 ME2

ME2 is a great prequel to ME3, but a horrible sequel to ME1.

@ OP

By the way, I forgot to mention that all the RPG elements from ME1 have been gutted in ME2, now all you get are four skills you put points into, and a set amount of xp at the end of missions.

But even with all the downsides to ME2, its still a game that is worth playing and fun, just not as good as it could have been. Definitely not.

It really comes down to personal preference but not being an rpg purist, i found mass effect 2 a lot better overall. I can't exactly tell you why, but somehow the whole streamlining of the inventory, and the removal of the mako, etc. made the game feel more polished and complete.

Oh, and no elevators.

the entire forum population doesnt even come close to 5% of the total fan base of this game.

people register on forums for a few reasons, one very large group register to lodge issues with the game, a smaller portion register as they love the game, the MAJORITY of casual gamers still dont even know what a forum is.

If you take a forums attitude/comments and use that to form your opinion on a game, then you would of never played World of Warcraft, the PCs most succesfull MMO ever, you would of never played Modern Warfare Two on the PC, the worlds most succesful game ever, I could carry on but you get the point im making here.

Judge the game for yourself and decide what 'faction' you belong to here lol

Im in the 'I FREAKING LOVE THIS GAME' faction. and lol@ the random complaints people make up
