All people seem to do on these forums is ****, whine, and complain (and yes, it was necessary to use 3 similar words to describe the same thing).

Your question has clearly already been answered by a good number of people, but ME2 is great in a different way from ME1. They're both masterpieces, don't let the dimwits who demand perfection in every aspect of life turn you away from playing ME2, which I personally thought was better than ME1.

So if anyone says they preferred ME1 over ME2, they're ****ers, whiners and complainers? Yeah, sure.

You, kind sir, are taking my words out of context.  In no way did I say people who prefer ME1 over ME2 are ****ers, whiners, and complainers.  I even separated my topics with a distinct space.

So to clarify, I am suggesting that the person who posted the original post NOT take advice from the people who take so much time out of their lives to dissect ME2 and complain about every little thing about it.  I feel similarly towards those who dissect ME1 in the same manner.  I do believe ME2 is better than ME1, but I am not taking sides here.

Well, when someone posts generalizations in threads like this, things tend to get misunderstood. Just saying. I agree with what you're saying though. I only come out of my groups and into the forums occasionally and day after day I see the same people arguing about the same things they've been arguing for almost an entire year since the game was released.

I was drawn to this thread partially because my friend had mentioned it on a group and partially because the OP wanted some succinct answers. So I posted my perspective on the matter.

Anyway, we should shake hands now and call it a day.

Agreed.  The mere title of this thread attracted me to it because I realized those people who weren't 100% satisfied with ME2 were obviously having an effect on a newcomer to the series.  And as I said before, both games are masterful, and the OP should definitely check ME2 themselves rather than listen to these boards IMO.

You know what? Don't play the game if you're so scared. Listen to all these anonymous boobs and just ignore it. Whatever. I enjoyed ME1 and ME2 thoroughly (Except for the goddamned hill climbing in ME1, Jesus). It really must suck to be someone who can't enjoy both.

I'm an anonymous boob telling you to skip ME2.

If you LOVED ME1 for the RPG-ish ness, and have an aversion to Gears of War style games you will hate ME2.

If you like Gears of War style games, and can handle the gimping of the immersion and vast feeling of ME1 you will like ME2.

I hated it, because every second of good gameplay there are 10 other WTF Bioware moments.

It's polished for sure, but lost its charm when EVERY SINGLE ROOM YOU ENTER IS FULL OF HALF WALLS.

That might fly on consoles, but ducking and waiting for shields to recharge feels dopey and very consoley.

The story also blows compared to ME1, and feels very silly (especially the last boss lol).

What a waste.

Are you a PC gamer OP?  If so, get the game on Steam for $10, then when you realize I was right in my analysis you will have not wasted much $.

I have a feeling ME3 will redeem itself.

ME2 is for consoles.

Ha! Worst case of rose-tinted glasses I've ever seen. ME1 had both of these things in spades.

I feel the same way about the game, but if you loved ME1, it's at least worth a rent to keep up with the series. In a presentation, Christina Norman (lead gameplay designer) did note that people were upset about the lack of rpg features. The slide presentation is available online... can't remember where... but it has a few diagrams and bullet points about bringing back more of the rpg features to ME3.

Because of this, I wouldn't count the series for a loss yet. Often times things will swing drastically one way before the right formula is found.

And I'll admit that I hated ME2. From my earlier long post, it's obvious to see that there was nothing in it that I really loved. But I don't think this should make the OP not try it. If you loved the first game, it's worth it to at least rent it and play it through at least once so that a more sound decision can be made about ME3 when they tentatively dial things back to a possibly more satisfying rpg/shooter ratio.

If you dont play ME2 then when ME3 comes out then you cant continue your story arc. It will end with ME1 if you dont play ME2.

Try it. You might or might not like it, but I will bet on the fact that you will love it.

So ME1 has the exact same design philosophy of ducking behind walls?  I've played through it multiple times, I didn't get that impression; nor were the levels designed as "corridor -> open room of half walls -> corridor"

There is ducking in ME1, as in, duck anytime you want; not in ME2.

ME2 also consolidated all "action" buttons into 1 button - so on the PC I just loled at the gimped-ness.

I'll say it again: ME2 is for consoles, where games have different standards.

If the OP is a PC gamer, I would highly recommend buying the game for cheap, or skipping it.  If you are a console gamer you will like it, no question.

Though, since they make each game a stand alone, you could just skip it the second and make a new Shep for the third, if you decide not to bother with the second for whatever reason

You know, there is a demo.

I know I said that already. I just thought I'd be repetitive.

I bet the OP feels kind of like an undecided voter that's just asked a group of random people who to vote for XD

But seriously, I think the OP probably ran away from the thread, muttering something like, "my God... what have I done?"

To be fair to ME2, the environments are much more varied and detailed, which I enjoyed. You won't be entering identical bunkers/corridors/ships during exploration one million times in ME1 like you do in ME2. There were only a couple of planets I truly enjoyed admiring while I bobbed about in the mako.

But be prepared for a lot of Shepard, "derp derp!" moments in ME2.

Ha, probably! :D

I think a moderator should close this thread down with the words, "there is a demo. Try it."

I think you mean it to be the other way around: ME1 was very cookie-cutter in terms of side missions, ME2 had variety.

Ah, well, as I said in previous posts, I rarely frequent the forums, namely because of crap like this.

What does this even mean? You cannot duck any time you want in ME2?

Also confused here. ME2 uses every button on the controller, and you need multiple keys for melee and hotkeyed powers on PC.

Everyone fighting on this thread needs to relax and chill with the personal attacks.

Everyone has different opinions of ME1 and ME2. That doesn't mean that we have to kill each other. If we are here on these forums, regardless of what we may have liked or disliked in either game, I'm pretty sure it means that we all enjoyed the games and the game universe.

The OP asked a simple question, whether he should play ME2 or not because of the criticisms he's read on the forum.

The answer is he should.

And I say that being one of the people that has had harsh criticisms for both ME1 and ME2.

Yes, you are wrong. Mass Effect 2 has received awesome reviews and is hell of a game. It is so great that the only faults that people can find are tiny details. So everything you have heard is about these tiny details.

LOL!!! at the guy who said the RPG elements are stronger in ME2 because of paragon renegade interrupt....They added in one more thing yet took away control of everything else and its better?..and in all reality I would of been fine without the interupts and just stick to the blue and red choices..they make you feel obligated to use them and you cant even lay back during someones talk.

In ME2 there is so few weapons...so view upgrades..that there is never actually anything to consider before going into battle...the leveling is so over simplified and boring...The sidequests seem so few and far between...the citadel, omega, illium, and tuchanka are all incredibly small with sidequests SO dumbed down that they throw the solution to them in places your guaranteed to already go..find a trinket...family data...its impossible to miss and its there just so they can act like they cared about sidequests.
