We'll see in ten years if the ME series is still spoken about.

The only reason Starcraft remained as popular as it did was the tremendously good multiplayer. The setting was decent but nothing tremendously special.

Fixed,

and if the rumors are right and ME3 has multiplayer, my points stands and we'll see how it goes.

BACK ON TOPIC.  Flags.  Squadmates.  Yeah.  And stuff.

Indeed. Derailings are for trolls and those without arguments about the actual topic.

So yeah, returning squadmates. I would like to add a very important factor: Capitalism and costumer relations.
Much research shows that the most common reason for a costumer to leave a company and stop buying their products are that they feel the company isn't listening to them. The second most common reason is that the company don't live up to the high expectations they have set for themselves.

Some may love to bash on fans (while not so bravely hiding behind internet anonymity) on these forums but that doesn't change the fact that a company is doomed without popularity and returning costumers. Knowing what the costumers want, setting reasonable but high (lazyness is NOT a option) expectations is absolutely VITAL in buisness. That is the good thing with fans, they give the producer valuable information for free and the wise producer can even discuss with them what should be a reasonable thing to expect.

Now I am certain that BioWare and EA knew all this long ago when they decided to make everyone from the ME2 gang killable. Even way back in ME1 in fact. I doubt that they would set unreachable goals for themselves and risk being seen as a unreliable produces of games. Exactly how they will do this, well, I'm not a programmer or a writer so all I can do is to speculate. But using some positive thinking about how they have done things before and improved their concepts it seems to me that returning squadmates would be possible once more.

That's not strictly true. Fallout is a good example of this. The original "FO" fans went ballistic when they found out that FO was going to be a TPS/FPS. Never really seemed to damage the franchise in the least.
And a good many of them did a 180 once they actually saw the result.

People will complain if things don't go their way. Like if Bioware introduces a new cast. But if it's a very good cast with very good ties to the story most will forget what they were complaining about. The majority of people will just take an unreasonable view as that and ignore it anyway.

Espacially with things that take a long time to appear there is a turnover of old and new. People who played ME1 will have moved on and never played ME2, likewise people who played ME2 who will never play ME3. There are also people who will just see the game and get it regardless of it being part of a series.

Message boards give a bit a skewed view of things in the wider market.
