I just couldn't get over how boring Miranda was. I couldn't relate to her at all or her loyalty mission. She was hot, but she had nothing on Samara. It's like, if you're going to make a character that's the equivalent to Megan Fox in Transformers, (all about the looks) the worst thing you can do is add a character that looks a lot hotter than her.

I enjoyed talking to Jacob even though he was kind of an ass. But at least his loyalty mission made up for it. Probably one of the best in the game.

In your opinion maybe, I thought Garrus', Samara's, Thane's, Tali's, Mordin's, Kasumi's, Zaeed's and Jack's all much more.

For my experience with insanity:
1) Thane (The best insanity partner, for sure. Throw can get you out of tight spaces, warp will explode other biotic powers in use, and his sniping is godly. He's one of the only teammates I've had on insanity that consistently stays up and falls back and can retreat and shoot at the same time. Not to mention on the Shadow Broker base his throw was hilariously awesome lifting baddies off the ship and into the atmosphere)
2) Garrus (His powers are kinda crap unless paired with Miranda and they're fighting geth. But, he has one of the best shots. Paired with Thane they're nearly unstoppable. With that said, I like to use him, but don't always get the chance with loyalty missions only having one available slot)
3) Mordin (Incinerate is the best. Makes mostly smart choices in battle, but will try to take on krogan every so often like a dummy and die)
4) Jack (works very well biotically with Thane, but she has an affinity for getting herself killed by sprinting in with her shotgun and not knowing when to fall back when commanded)
5) Miranda (very useful when paired with Garrus against geth, or paired with Thane for biotic explosion, but I find her annoying and leave her out unless I really need her)
6) Grunt (he's great, but he gives me gray hairs with the way he sprints into combat on insanity, so for my own sanity I leave him aboard)
7) Samara (she's great for the first collector base when paired with Thane with their throw/pull/warp)
8) Tali (her combat drone is helpful, but she tends to die a lot)
9) Legion (would be higher if I had him for more than 1 mission)
10) Kasumi (Shadow Strikes and kills herself every 3 seconds)
11) Zaeed (Too stupid to take cover properly on his own and dies immediately)
12) Jacob (Only mission I took him on (in every game I've ever played) is his loyalty mission. Gets himself killed every 10 seconds on insanity, has annoying dialogue and I want to drop kick him)

Just my experience with Insanity...

For pure combat: Thane (biotics + sniper = win......and he seems to understand cover/fallback, unlike some other characters) and Garrus/Samara/Jack/Zaeed/Mordin/Jacob/Legion

For RPing: Thane (LI as F!Shep and Brother-in-arms for M!Shep) and LI (if not Thane)/Samara/Garrus/Mordin/Legion

*EDIT*
Oh right.....we're supposed to list our least favorite as well......ummm, Morinth??  I really do like all the characters.Image IPBImage IPB

Haven't even considered it from a gameplay pov but as characters I like Thane, Kasumi and Zaeed most. Garrus would be in there too if it wasn't for all the calibrating, and it's got to be said that he's got some sensational dialogue when he's the LI of a FemShep. Legion would also be in there if he was available earlier in the game and you got to hear more from him (haven't looked into doing this with mods yet). Mordin would be next for having sex advice for Shepards of any gender or cross-species inclinations while preferring bacterial cultures himself because you don't need mood music or alcohol. Jack's pretty funny in a loony kind of way and Tali's kind of sweet, so they'd probably next along with Grunt who I'd have liked a lot more if the first game hadn't spoiled us for Krogan awesomeness with Wrex. Samara and Jacob are a little boring but I guess I must find them okay since unlike Kaiden and Ashley in the first game I have no urge to get either of them killed.

Least favourite, it pains me to say, is the only Aussie in the game - Miranda. "Oh, yeah, I've been genetically engineered to be so much better than you, ordinary person. My mind, my looks, my body... I was made to be as close as possible to perfect." It might be true but why, Bioware, why did you have to make the Aussie chick such an insufferable big noter? Also she looks like she has boobage and backside designed to increase the appeal of the game to males who are too young to legally buy it in many jurisdictions, plus what that asari merc says about Miranda's outfit on her loyalty mission is pretty spot on. And Jack's right - she's a Cerberus b!tch. I know she changes by the end of the game but I just find her so in love with how brilliant she is that I'm happy to leave her in her room as much as I can.

I was a soldier. I switched my bonus power between inferno gernade and slam. I mostly used the Mantis or the Widow when I got it, so I liked having squadmates that could fall back with me and take people out from afar. And honestly, Insanity isn't -that- bad. There are definitely a few missions here and there that make you hate life (namely with the Collectors), but if you take your time, look around and order your squadmates, you will quickly find a rhythm of killing and retreating that keeps you alive and the pace moving.

Old thread. Don't care. Just wanted to answer since I'm new to the franchice and I didn't find a rule against replying to older topics =P. Anyways... (not counting DLC characters btw since I don't have them)

FavoriteThane
I pretty much ended up bringing him everywhere. Not only is he a fascinating, developed character who captured my interest from the start, his basic abilities are great and go well in hand with my gameplay. Warp is always useful, Throw is great for crowd control (+ may deal massive amount of damage) and unlike some characters Thane tends to fight sensibly. Properly taking cover and retreating by his own. It's almost always my other squadmate who ends up "dying". Does a very admirable amount (+50%) of weapon damage when Drell Assassin perk is fully upgraded. Possibly +65% if you have Miranda in your squad. Add some weapon upgrades and he kicks major ass. My sissy Shepard sometimes just sat behind cover when Thane pretty much sniped every enemy. It was beautiful.
Taking both character and gameplay traits into consideration, my #1 squadmate for sure.

Least favoriteJacob
I do not hate him as a character. Heck, I don't actually even dislike him. Some other characters irritate me more but the problem with Jacob is that I find his character bland and abilities inferior. I pretty much never took him with me because I just couldn't find any use to him. He tended to die a lot during his loyalty mission. Unlike Thane he obviously didn't really get the concept of "taking cover".
So it's the mixture of dullness and inefficiency why Jacob is my least favorite. There's some other squadmates too I pretty much never use and may also find irritating but at least they have something in their character which makes them a bit more interesting and actually awakes some emotions in me. Whether it is annoyance or appreciation.

Kasumi's Shadow Strike is extremely useful on Casual, Normal, and Veteran.

Same with Jack and her Shockwave, but I hear not so much on Hardcore/Insanity.

Zaeed and Katsumi are excellent. They're both DLC but Z has Inferno grenade which he uses excellently on his own as well as Katsumi using shadow strike, the pair is relentless.
