As I sometimes feel the need to do when I want a bit of mindless entertainment, I've been playing some MMORPGs recently. One of the interesting little tidbits that I've seen some of them use is to have certain quests create creatures or objects that only a character in a certain quest state can see or interact with. I've been trying to think about the prospects for implementing something like this in NWN2.

Now, I don't think that NWN2 PWs should make stuff pop out of nowhere like magic--unless that's exactly the impression they want to give--but I do think there could be some interesting uses for something like this. (I don't think it's as much of an issue for single-player modules because you can just CreateObject there and only the one player will see it.) One example would be dream states or illusions. One way these are commonly handled now is by jumping the PC to a new area (in MotB, for one). Another example would be consuming a substance that allows you to see stuff around you that you can't normally perceive--real or hallucinated.

One approach to this that I've thought about would be using GUI overlay tricks. However, while this could allow you to see stuff, it couldn't determine interactability. This also couldn't do anything for NPCs. And blanket visibility/non-visibility (perhaps through Sanctuary effects) just doesn't seem nuanced enough for many situations.

Any brainstorms on how to implement stuff like this? I know we have a lot of limitations, given that we don't have properly working Invisibility effects.

This would require a server-side patch (a-la NWNX4). Someone who is motivated and knows C/C++ well could implement this functionality; I could provide suggestions on where to start if there are any takers.

Heh, I had guessed you might have some input, Skywing. :)

I'm not currently doing any PW-building, so I guess this will probably stay theoretical for now, but it's interesting to know that there are possibilities.
