Advice for an old gamer

started with the old red basic box Dungeons & Dragons set. I
admit it took me a few years to truly understand the wonderful world
of tabletop RPG’s. I have used the same 8 characters in just about
every game I have played in one way or another. I can probably
squeeze out a few more for a total of 12. these other four have a
similar build with another character but a much different personality
than the build the resemble from the solid 8. now after all these
years of gameing I have finally decided to try to create new
characters to play as I planned on retiring the 12 and putting them
into my PW as npc quest givers. So now my problem is I got writers
block as far as making a new character. No ideas what so ever. Any
suggestions that may help me get my brain going again would be great.

Thus, the scope of the potential answers is somewhat less expansive than you might have hoped.

The thing of it is, you can play ANY build in ANY way to be ANY character you want! (I do mean ANY!). Maybe you should forget about character for a bit and just play. Grab something you have never done and go wild! Or, even better, search out the old Epic character builders guild on the old forums and learn about NEW character building in nwn! Having played 8 characters for nearly 50 years can dull anyones imagination! (sorry, not 50 but nearly 30 anyway).

when i made my characters for the old tabletop games i would think up some back story to explain how or why they were the character they were. i have been playing nwn for around 5 years now and i have pretty much played most of the builds that can be made from the base classes and prestige classes offered. it got to a point where i started adding the prc into almost every mod i wanted to play.
so after all this playing i am having trouble coming up with new personality, back story's,ideas in general. i cant seem to get my mind to spit out new ideas .

Actually, I think avado's suggestion is worth following-up although not for the same reason, i.e. epic builds. Quite often, to deflect the tedium of number crunching, a builder may use the background to spark the creative algorithm. You are welcome to check out an idea I had for a clan of halflings forced to survive in a land not of their choosing that I wrote up for the legacy pre-epic guild here. But there are lots of other pre-epic and epic builds with interesting character ideas in the same neighborhood if you poke around a bit.omen_shepperd wrote...
i guess what i am having the most trouble with is coming up with concepts for characters, ie back story. build wise i don't have much concern with as i am more about the story and rp than pvp or hack and slash.

A grave digger that becomes a necromantic adventurer.
A Cleric of Lathander dabbling in the schisms of Anuramator (spelling)
A merchants son that finds piracy a lot easier than factoring and usury
An elf that is dedicated to the restoration of Elven primacy in Faerun
A Dwarf raised by Elves ?
The list is simply endless.
As mentioned search google as there are a number of "generic plot" websites and tips and tools.
