I just don't like being forced into flirting with him. I want to be able to talk to him and build a friendship without my femshep talking all sexy to him. The whole situation makes me feel violated.

This is, in part, an exaggeration.  It is entirely possible to be just friends with Jacob and not delve into female Shepard's coquettish lines.  You can get him to the "spill some drinks" dialogue easily, no matter the sex of your Shepard.  But you'll be stuck there, with no chance at building the relationship beyond that.

However, nobody can answer the question as the why was Jacob the bottom of many if not most of the ME2 jokes BEFORE ME2 came out.

I was around before ME2 was released and I don't remember any Jacob jokes.
As a matter of fact due to the entire lack of exposure from Bioware nobody even really talked about him.
He's just a dull character.

You mean you don't remember the number of threads/post joking about how we will find a dog fighting ring in the SR2 Normandy because Jacob lookes like Michael Vick?

Or you don't remember the post joking about how Jacob will steal Shepard's camera time and say stuff like "I know you're trying to save the Galaxy, but where the white women at?" because he looks like Kanye West?

Or you don't remember the post making fun of the dialog in the marketing videos like "Hit them with the good stuff"

Or you don't remember a thread talking about Jacob should be the comic relief character of the game and say lines like "Dayum! Dat iz wack!" or any other stereotypical quote that you can associate with Afrian-American males?

I mean Jacob was recieving a bad rap before the game came out and people had NO IDEA about his romance dialog or his core character development/personality.

I'm digging them up and here is one thread that was created pre-ME2

http://meforums.biow...18791&forum=144

That thread is a representation of the type of attention Jacob BEFORE ME2 came out.

Jacob is hardly a "dull" character, but when you look at him compared to some of the other squadmates, it's easy to basically toss him in the metaphorical fireplace. He's got a somewhat interesting history, but nothing that really felt particularly memorable. Jacob is Jacob, is Jacob. Love him or hate him, he's there.

@Randy_Mac and for that, you win a priiiiize.

I remember one poster (known for his trolling and frequent name changes) saying this.

Or you don't remember the post joking about how Jacob will steal Shepard's camera time and say stuff like "I know you're trying to save the Galaxy, but where the white women at?" because he looks like Kanye West?

I remember people saying he looks like Kanye West, that's about it.

We had no depictions of Jacob in the marketing.
We never heard him say a word.

Nope but I suspect you're trying to turn this into a race thing.

I mean Jacob was recieving a bad rap before the game came out and people had NO IDEA about his romance dialog or his core character development/personality.

Jacob never recieved a 'bad rap' prior to release because Bioware never revealed anything about him and thus no one ever talked about him.

wait a minute...i thought supporting jacob was the equivalent of decrying him >.> i mean there isn't much else you can say here.

edit:noticed some relatively racial things on this page, i just wanted to clarify that people aren't fond of him because he is a Carth Character and not a funny Carth Character like alistair he is just Carth, Like Kaiden and Like Carth.

By Carth what i mean is he is an upstanding morally solid individual to the point he has problems connecting to the audience, OR He is just so dreadfully bland do to the now typical Renegade good guy routine that ME has already pulled plenty of and in much better ways than jacob, For example Wrex well executed renegade Good Guy ME 2 garrus, Thane all much better renegade good guys than Jacob. he just had poor character execution and possibly even planning.

I wasn't around during that time , but politically incorrect projecting on a character has nothing to do with actual complaining about a character.

Most people don't care enough about Jacob to love him or hate him. He just makes me go 'meh'. Although he gets points for being the most stable character on the Normandy and the only one who did not require a paragon interrupt to stop him from murdering someone.

I also think most of the boys are jealous that he had Miranda first, even though he thinks he's not good enough for her.

he has no interesting motivation as far as I could tell

I never really got a sense of why he's helping shepard, or why he's with cerberus. With other squadmates, it was generally pretty clear

Lol @ No one ever talked about him...okay, tomorrow I'll PM you a buttload of thread created pre-release in relation to Jacob in a negative light.

Jacob was featured in video for the first time when the videos showing the early sequences of the game in which Shepard wakes up in the Med Bay and all. It gets to the part where Shepard meets Jacob and Jacob eventually says "I'm a Biotic, so let me know when you want me to hit them with the good stuff" and from there it was on.

Tali didn't require a paragon interrupt :P nor did Legion, or Grunt.

I made Anderson councilor. I disliked Jacob and Miranda both because they were Cerberus apologists (I hated the fact that I had to play along and couldn't leave). If you want to convince yourself that everybody who dislikes Jacob is a racist, even when they point out good reasons to dislike him, then maybe you're projecting and you're racist yourself.

That might be a part of it, though I'm not sure that he thinks he isn't good enough for her.  That line has been picked apart repeatedly, and there seem to be two main interpretations for it.  Either he thinks he isn't good enough for her, as you suggest, or he isn't willing to put up with her high maintenance BS.

OK, then I stand corrected. Jacob is one of the few squad mates who did not require a paragon interrupt to stop them from murdering someone.

agreed the not backing out was a major dissapointment

I will agree in coparrison to most the crew though he is super stable, 2 psychotic biotics, moderately  insane dying drell, Emo sad face Garrus (though totally understandable) Tali  grunt and leagion were also fairly stable though... Tali less so than grunt and legion.

Jacob sucks at combat.

When your idea of "the good stuff" is Pull, then you suck.

Alright, but so far all you have found is one tiny thread that lasted no more than 2 pages.
The threads that ****ed about how ugly Miranda and Jack are were far more frequent and far bigger.

I followed ME2 until about 2 weeks prior to it's release.
We never got such a video.

Before I had much experience with this game, I would have agreed with you.  It is true that Jacob fits certain Shepards better than others.  His ammo power helps any class during the early game.  Once the weapons classes can afford their own ammo powers (after evolving their signature ability and their passive), Jacob does lose some of his appeal.  But until you reach that point, Squad Incendiary Ammo is helpful.  He lacks instant cast defense stripping powers, but not every squadmate needs them to be effective.  Look at Zaeed.

I'm not sure why you think Pull is bad.  It's an incredibly useful power.  It's a reliable start of Warp explosions and has the potential to completely shut down a group of enemies for a significant duration.

And your point is..... what?

Well my point is that I find it weird how whenever you ask a person here why they dislike Jacob or why is Jacob always the butt of many if not most squadmate jokes and the common answer is "He is a dull character" or "He has a bad romance dialog" or something around those lines. However, nobody can answer the question as the why was Jacob the bottom of many if not most of the ME2 jokes BEFORE ME2 came out.

I remember literally a few months before ME2 came out and how people were quick to point out that they aren't romancing Jacob or some other crazy stuff.

after reading the first page a bit more i think this is a funny post :P

for 1 if everyone you talk to says he's a dull character, or he has bad romance dialogue, certaintly he isn't the heat sink savoring type as he's not a Turian, You would htink you would understand that most people find him dull or boring. As to the Quesiton why is Jacob the bottom of many ME 2 jokes, as a certaintly wouldn't say most Turian Councilor fellow has that title, i ask a similar question Why is Carth made fun of the most out of all the KotOR Characters?  or for that matter Why do we insult the Turian Councilor?

as far as your claim of predetermined judgment, Jacob was unknown to me until i played ME 2 it wasn't until after palling around with him i came to dislike him. Now Thane on the other hand, Jack, and Grunt, and Miranda, We all targets in my eyes, i was hoping for the oppportunity to shoot thane as i despised him pre-release, Jack i still wish i could simply shoot and be done with, Grunt is also dull i very muhc wish that Wrex Jr. Stayed on Tuchanka, Miranda needs to be poisoned...very baddly...preferably by the cook. And even something i saw in a 'leaked' pre-release Gameplay video involving Mordin made me hate him a little. I have since come to sympathize with thane, tolerate grunt, and still despise Miranda and Jack. Mordin is also among the top 3 party members Does that mean i'm sexist?  No it means those 2 characters i feel no connection too.

so given the wide arrange of pre-judgment these forums did in the pre-release days i have but one thing to say:

"Ah Yes [Predetermined judgment] We have dismissed this claim."
