I think people resent him because he's the most emotionally & psychologically stable individual in the Mass Effect universe... that makes him boring in the eyes of most :)

I agree. Jacob is the most normal guy. He's also very charismatic and likable. If Bioware would just bump up "the funny" a couple notches, he would have been more enjoyable. Jacob said a few things that made me laugh out loud. One of them was, "Save it for philosophy night."

Jacob is also one of the most realistic characters made for a video game in terms of modelling and animation. He doesn't suffer from "uncanny valley" like many of the other characters.

For me, the main issue with him is that he's the weakest character in combat.

How can you not love a character who gives you a Bro hug and wants to get loud and spill drinks on the citadel after the mission? Jacob is a true G.

Well aparently if you say (as femshep of course) that you want Garruss he at one point calls him a "cuttlebone" also he's derissive of Thane after his recruitment and some people don't like him because he is part of a TERRORIST group....some people don't like that.

Before the game came out, there was boys that hated him because it was hinted that Miranda and Jacob are/ were in a relationship. They said they were going to kill him if this was true.

Some girls hated him because they thought he'd take their chance away to have sex with an alien. Before DAO and ME2, there was only ever one male LI.

You have to pick the right responses but basically in one scenario you get the spill drinks comment and the bro hug right before the suicide mission if you go talk to him.

Actually, as a character Jacob grew on me. As friends though, I would never romance him. But I was disappointed of the lack of friendship conversations with him. I think you could only speak to him three times and one of those conversations were filled with "Me Shepard, you Jacob, let's ****" options. That's how I felt anyway.

I don't hate him, he is better than most videogame heroes, but the 'priiiiize' is too good a meme to be abandoned.

I don't hate him, but I do feel incredibly awkward talking to him as a femShep, so he tends to get ignored a lot.

One comment I liked from Jacob comparing the good deed he did in Mass Effect Galaxy.

"It's like pissing yourself in dark pants. You get a warm feeling but no one really notices"

I'm not sure who this "Jacob" character you're speaking of is, however I have seen Old Spice man walking around the Normandy imitating Barry White:

I wouldn't even necessarily define morinth as a psychopathic character... To me, Morinth and Samara were sort of a Yin/Yang Relationship: Samara was a symbol of a controlled, black and white belief system. Morinth, due to many reasons, preferred a life of(at least in her mind) absolute freedom, and recognized nothing is truly black and white. Maybe I'm looking too into things, just putting it out there. I know this is a Jacob thread, but... come on :

Quick summary of the characteristics of a psychopath.

"The prototypical psychopath has deficits or deviances in several areas: interpersonal relationships, emotion, and self-control. Psychopaths gain satisfaction through antisocial behavior, and do not experience shame, guilt, or remorse for their actions.  Psychopaths lack a sense of guilt or remorse for any harm they may have caused others, instead rationalizing the behavior, blaming someone else, or denying it outright. Psychopaths also lack empathy towards others in general, resulting in tactlessness, insensitivity, and contemptuousness. All of this belies their tendency to make a likable first impression; psychopaths have a superficial charm about them, enabled by a willingness to say anything without concern for accuracy or truth. Shallow affect also describes the psychopath's tendency for genuine emotion to be short-lived and egocentric, with an overall cold demeanor. Their behavior is impulsive and irresponsible, often failing to keep a job or defaulting on debts. Psychopaths also have a markedly distorted sense of the potential consequences of their actions, not only for others, but also for themselves. They do not deeply recognize the risk of being caught, disbelieved or injured as a result of their behaviour"

Sounds like Morinth to me.

Sound a lot like Jack as well.

Jack actually tries to confront the things that made her who she became. She knows that what Cerberus did to her was wrong, and although she shows little remorse now, understands that she is what she is because of Cerberus, and for that reason doesn't like Cerberus.

Morinth is very much aware of what she is and embraces it, never thinking what she does is wrong.

That's a very clear difference.

Never hated ol' Jacob, the last line he says to maleshep made me actually like him a bit(get loud spill drinks on the citadel thing) I like his loyalty to shep too. He's just a bit boring to me. All the other characters make me smile/laugh/whatever at things they say or do, Jacob just doesn't. Except the priiiiiiiiiiiiize ofcourse!

You can call it understands she is what she is because of cerberus, but to me it sounds  a lot more like avoiding all resposibility for her actions by blaming cerberus.

Hey, I personally love Jacob simply because his character spawned one of my favorite ME memes.

I disagree.  If Garrus were human, he would suffer the same "whiner" stigma as Kaidan.  The human male squadmates just can't win.  If they express themselves, they're "whiners."  If they don't, they're "boring."

This x 100.

all of this. Kaidan even says he doesn't want to sound like a whiner and he's still labeled as a whiner, Garrus actually whined about Sidonis betraying him and everyone's throwing their femsheps at him. human LI's can't get a break.

SPOT ON. Jacob is also ludicrously underrated in combat. I get comments on my youtube vids all the time asking about why I chose to bring Jacob along.

Jacob pretty much sucks if he has 1 or more points in Barrier. He's decent before his LM or even after (if you have LoTSB), but either way he is definitely worse than at least 5 or 6 squadmates.

Does it mean I'm racist if I don't romance the alien squadmates?  Just...ewwww.  Have tried.   Both genders, several playthroughs.  Can't do it.

By the time you get to his loyalty mission you don't really need him any more any way. I use him primarily early on when I don't have an ammo power and don't have access to a quicker or more useful pull-bot than him. I've yet to see a single build in which an ammo power takes priority over class power and passive so that's plenty of time for Jacob to shine.

His time for being useful might be limited, but that doesn't make him any less useful during that time.

I have to disagree. I have Jacob fully upgraded and he's a monster with the GPS, even at a distance, he's like a me1 vanguard especially when he can use barrier freely and just run at people, soak up damage and then use barrier to stay alive. He dies way less than some squad mates (yeah I mean you garrus) and he's accurate with a shot gun definitly a top 5 squadmate.
