This is science fiction!! Learning a language or setting up a translator in a short time is more realistic to me than using the mass relay network.
Yeah, I know, I know. Star Trek has the whole... universal translator thing but I don't think ME has entirely the same thing. According to the codex, it is done through machine, "[m]odern portable computers allow anyone with a few hundred credits of
equipment to enjoy seamless real-time translation of alien languages,
courtesy of handheld PDAs, computers in clothing or jewelry, or
sub-dermal implants". This story accounts for humanities first steps on the galactic scene, they wouldn't have knowledge of turian languages yet, unless they managed to decipher it through prior interrogations. It really depends on how far into the Shanxi occupation this story is set in. The turians might have gotten a grasp on human languages from early reconnaissance?
These might be details that are explained later in the book, after all, it's only a 7 page preview.
I'm already an avid comic book reader so I'm looking forward to adding this to my pull list!
