I don't really get why Kai Leng is so hated but Thane is so loved.

Because Thane, as a freelance assassin, killed bad people with no consideration for their species. His son says so when you meet him.

He also reformed. Kai did not. Honestly, a better comparison would be Mordin or Samara. They've both done worse things than Thane what with neutering a race again and killing devoted fathers.

Even better would be Zaeed. You know that his jobs don't follow the law or even necessarily a moral compass.

I thought assassins kill anyone they are sent to kill, good or bad. How about Morinth?

No, Thane is different, at least it is implied that he is. While he takes no responsibility for the kills themselves, I was under the impression from his dialog and his son's that after he went freelance he only took jobs against bad people.

That may not be the case, but again, he reformed at some point.

And Morinth isn't popular enough to be a valid comparison. She's also worse than Kai Leng in that he kills because he thinks it's right while she kills because she loves it.

While I don't like Kai in the slightest, I'd still pick him over Morinth any day of the week.

^Since I picked Morinth 3 times and she survived Suicide Mission once I guess I would choose him too.

He's an outright "racist" for one. Ashley says some mildly nationalistic things and everyone wants to burn her at the stakes so it isn't really surprising.

I'd say he'd make an interesting squadmate. I want Kahlee Sanders as a squadmate too.

People think Miranda doesn't have a xenophobic bone in her body? She works for Cerberus too.
And Kahlee isn't a fighter. She's not even a biotic. She would useless unless they retconned her.

While I would guess no novel characters will make it into the game as squadmates.... it would sure be cool if they made cameos

I remember when ME2 first came out I was all thinking subject Zero was going to be Gillian... I was wrong. Now that I think about it Kai Leng as a squadie gives too much hope for all of the melee and energy sword fans

Not that keen on Kai Leng, but if Renegade Shepard gets the chance to fully join Cerberus and the organisation has a role to play in the Reaper war, then I see nothing wrong with Leng joining the team.

Actually, I might even prefer him to Thane, whose Carth issues really annoyed me (seriously, how many times are they going to repeat the "dead wife, son about to turn evil, protagonist must act as psychiatrist if female" formula?). Sure he's an assassin and a racist, but Thane is an assassin and his whole talk about not being responsible for his kills since his body is the vessel of someone else makes no sense. I'm not saying that Kai Leng is the better man or more moral Thane, but if we're supposed to have the archetypical cold assassin on the team, then I'd like them not to try and whitewash it like they did with Thane. The Reapers are coming and are out to kill (or harvest or whatever) everyone and so rejecting people just because they're despiceable or have shady morals you do not like makes no sense, as long as he is useful at least.
