My computer completely shuts down after about 15 minutes of playing. Everytime.

Almost every time an admitted failure exists of this one's severe nature (Sandy Bridge's SATA functions), it means that testing was rushed, and other failures also slipped through. We simply don't know yet what those others amount to.

Its funny, because the same can be said of Neverwinter Nights 2 itself - even after a ton of patches.  It has to be one of the buggiest PC games I have ever played.

Anyways, thanks for your input.

I think Dragon Age is buggier.  But if your computer is shutting off, then I would look at your PSU.  I don't remember if I read it or not, but what is your GPU?  PSU size?

That's just one more reason why I dislike "me, too" comments.  But no, we have extremely little from the new author that is useful (so far) in this case.

Sounds like overheating.

I won't get into a long winded discussion of Dragon Age vs Neverwinter Nights 2 - all I'll say is that I've experienced far more bugs with Neverwinter Nights 2.

Here's my applicable hardware info as it was pointed out that I did not post it (I apologize):

PSU: Xigmatek NRP-MC851 850W
CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K @4.7
MB: ASUS P8P67 Deluxe
GPU: MSI GTX 580 OC 1.5GB @875/1750/2200
RAM: 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3-1600
Monitor: Dell UltraSharp U3011 (2560 x 1600)

I thought it was overheating related too, so I ran Real Temp and GPU-Z in the background to monitor temps for my CPU and GPU while I was in game. My CPU maxed at 54C (well below the max threshold @90C) and my GPU maxed at 84C (again, well below max threshold @100C). I can get a wattage reading from my UPS and including my monitor I never passed 400W in game.

As I said before, I can play a graphics heavy FPS like Crysis with no problems but I was getting shutdowns when playing NWN2. I decided to turn off antialiasing in NWN2 (was at 8x - set it to 0x) and from my single test that seems to have worked.  I checked the temps and my GPU maxes at 71C with antialiasing off.   I tried turning off antialiasing because I read somewhere (unfortunately don't remember where - it could have been here) that NWN2 applies it in a way that really strains a system. It must have been straining my system to the point where it shut down to protect itself. I haven't played NWN2 over the past few days as Crysis has been pretty fun but once I get back to NWN2 I will update as to if turning off antialiasing fixes my issue for good.  What is interesting is that NWN2 did not have the shutdown problem with my previous build when running at 8x antialiasing but that system used a 27" monitor running at 1920 x 1200 so the strain when using antialiasing was probably sigificantly lessened.

I want to note that I did not back off on my overclock, which I know is a viable alternative to turning off antialiasing. I am happy with leaving antialiasing off as it doesn't make a huge difference at 2560 x 1600.

I want to thank everyone for their assistance and would like apologize for being a bit short with my posts. NWN2 has been a hard game to play for me due to numerous bugs I've experienced when playing it and when you add the shutdown problem it just pushed me over the edge. If you have any other suggestions I would appreciate them.

Just so you know, your max cpu temp I believe is 72C and max gpu temp is 97C.

I've experienced the exact same problem as the original poster. After 5-15 minutes of gameplay the monitor on my laptop dies. Following this thread’s advice, and
a few others, I’ve updated my drivers, cleaned dust out of my vents,
enabled vsync, set my affinity to just the one CPU on my dual core and have
turned off all the graphics bells and whistles but this has only bought me half
an hour of gaming before it dead-screens.
The game runs
fine on my wife's machine which is older than mine but is a desktop so probably
vents better and thus I’m thinking overheating of the GPU is the problem. We play it linked over our Lan and my wife's is the server. Not sure if that makes a difference but I've had more luck playing it solo than mulitplayer.
Is my PC just underspecced in spite of being well above those recommended or should I be cooling it down with a mat or something? My specs
are:
Intel Core2 Duo T6400, 2.00 GHz
(2CPUs)
3GB Ram
Nvidia GeForce 9300M GS
512MB
DirectX
9.0c
Win XP

Cheers.

Check system settings in your Control Panel... some laptops send the display into "power saver" mode after a certain amount of time if there's no keyboard activity.

Not certain if this would do it, but it could be a start.

I don't know about the GPU... it might be touch and go for NWN2 which is graphically quite demanding compared to other games released in late 2006 (and even pushes cards today in 2011).

The power saver wasn't the issue - I'd switched that off when I used Steam to download the game. My card can handle NWN2 but not for very long without overheating it seems. I've jury-rigged a solution by boosting the laptop an inch off the table on four erasers and directing a desktop fan at it and I managed more than an hour without a glitch. I've now ordered a laptop cooler. Thanks for the advice, NWN DM.

You are welcome. Posted Image

And thank you for taking the time to post back here what resolved the issue for you.  Hopefully someone else will be aided by reading this thread in the future.
