Hey there, after playign the demo of ME2 on my ps3 and loving it, I
decided to buy ME1 in the steam holiday sale for a fiver, but i can't
play it without an awful lagging mouse.

I have a macbook pro late 2009 15-inch 2.53Ghz core 2 duo with 4gb of ram and have windows 7 64-bit installed on it. I have DirectX version 11 too and no antivirus.

The opening cinematic was dreadfully stuttery and slow when i first
opened it and there is a large lag on mouse input, it happens with the
trackpad and also when i use an external mouse. I have turned the
sensitivity all the way up and stuff but it makes no difference, I
really want to play this game but the lag will make it really hard in
actiony sequences Posted Image

I updated my nvidia drivers (9400m) and have turned all the settings on
the nvidia control panel and in the game to the lowest possible but
there is still a tonne of lag. This also happens if i try to play
oblivion by the way.

Is it because of this Geforce 9400m video card? Is it just all around
rubbish for 3d games or is there something that can be done to help with
the bad performance?

I'm pretty sure it is not bootcamp's fault because looking at this guys post http://forums.macrum...ad.php?t=493366, playing mass effect with a 2006 imac, he gets great performance with
full video settings, although he has a radeon 1600x or something card.
Am i stuffed or is there some trick to optimising my set up?

This thread shows new games running really well on the newer 13-inch
mbp's released a year after mine. i know they have better processers / video cards in but surely it
doesn't make THAT much difference and i should be able to play games
fine?

I also have very little hard drive space remaining (642MB) if that makes any difference

Sorry for banging on, hopefully someone can help me though, cheers! Posted Image

The 9400m is quite low-end when it comes to gaming, so that's probably the source of your problems. Here are a few things that might help though:

1. You said you have DirectX 11. Mass Effect 2 actually uses DirectX 9. Make sure you have it by downloading it here.

2. Try rolling back your nVidia graphics drivers to an older version. Newer drivers can actually cause problems with older games and older hardware.

3. In order to get better performance, lower the graphics settings, reduce resolution, turn off motion blur, etc.

I think this will be one of the major issues. Windows normally sets up its swap files to be 2.5 x RAM. That means you will need at least 10gb free hard drive space for the windows swap file to correctly function. Delete, move to USB stick or uninstall some stuff to try and free up at least 4gb hdd space.
Installing DX9.0c, and freeing up some space would be the first to things to try.
I would also suggest rolling back your video card driver, as the newer versions often implement "features" to enhance visuals on newer cards, but can lead to problems with older cards.

Please note that Win7 is not an officially supported OS for ME1. Some people get it running fine, others have all sorts of problems.

Thanks I'll give it a go, do you think i need to free up a whole 10 gigs then?
Are you guys saying I should uninstall DirectX11 and get 9.0c instead?

Cheers :)

DirectX: Win7 can have both versions running side by side without issue. Keep 11 on there, just install the 9.0c runtimes as well.

Free Space: Start off with about 2gb, and give it a test. You should get a performance increase with that, but wether or not it will be enough I cant say. 10gb is what I know Windows will be asking for, and sometimes Windows will go on strike if you dont cave in to its demands.
