So I have Leliana's lockpicking skill maxed, and I've been dumping points into Dex & Cunning.  But it seems like quite a few chests I come across she still cannot open.

Anyone have helpful tips for this?  I normally abhor using cheats, but I'm contemplating figuring out how to use one to open some of these chests that I know are capable of being picked but just won't open.  Any idea what her stats need to be to be able to pick anything pickable?

My tip would be to wait and get them later, or just ignore them. I never *once* found anything in a locked chest that was worth my time, and 99% of all the loot got sold for drugs--err... I mean potions.

Hrm ok. I am exploring Aeducan Thaig, and there are 3 chests I cannot get into. Was wondering if the secret to making Golems was anywhere in there.

Do you get an 'insufficient skill' message or 'unable to pick' message? Are you talking about the market in Denerim?

Ive noticed the pesky chests as well and I also have Leliana's lockpicking maxed as well.



Maybe some of these chests need a key?

I'm only talking about Insufficient Skill chests, when her lockpicking skill is through the roof. Chests that need keys or other plot devices I have no issues with.

Lock-picking isn't a skill; it's a talent. Are you thinking of the 'stealing' skill?



Cunning doesn't matter. It's all or nothing with lock-picking.

Her Cunning must not be high enough. That's all I can think of. Was hoping someone had experimented & knew a hard number I should be aiming for, or whether there are just some chests in the game that cannot be opened.

Cunning is definitely a factor, there is a chest in the Mage Tower which needs at least Rank 3 in open locks and 30 in Cunning. I tried it first with Rank 3 and 28 Cunning and after the insufficient skill message I bumped my cunning up to 30 and tried again and it opened.



The Cunning requirements seem pretty steep, there were still 2 chests in the tower which I couldn't open with 30 cunning.



And you can actually find very nice random loot in locked chests, there was a locked chest in the mage tower which contained a dagger with 2 rune sockets, this dagger actually rivaled the dagger from the locked chest in the town where you get Shale.
