70's & 80's was the golden age of horror. I dont think we will ever see films made like that again, mostly due to changing tastes and the over use of CGI. I prefer the Tom Savini approach myself ! But that's just one thing about them. Alot of them were very strange, original, a bit twisted, and had a very "surrealistic" quality to them.

I don't like "Slasher" Horror at all...I go more for the stuff that gives you that creepy feeling.
I loved a movie from sometime in the '80s called "The Changeling" with George C. Scott...it was freaky...
I know it doesn't really fit into the "Horror" genre, but the movie that is my all-time scariest is "Silence of the Lambs"...I saw that alone in a mostly empty Theater and it truely scared the heck out of me! Image IPB

Have you seen Braindead ? Peter Jackson from the LOTR movies directed it, strangely enough.

I like a good old school slasher but The Descent is the best horror I've seen in recent years.

just an FYI to those who haven't heard of it, its North American title is Dead Alive. and yes, it is awesome and twisted as hell.

gonna throw in Carnival of Souls into the mix. great old school non-violent horror shot on the dude's vacation time.

also, Psycho.

I'm not a slasher fan. I think the last 20 minutes of the original Alien movie scared me worse than anything I've ever seen. Also love Silence of the Lambs.

Too many to choose from, but It's out of the origianal Alien seeing as the sequel was more of a action film (still one of my favourites though) and The Thing.

Alien.

Beat me to it.  I've found most horror films don't really do much for me, but Alien is pretty unpleasant.

(Dis)honourable mention to Shaun Of The Dead if only for using old LPs as offensive weapons.

Alien and the Thing was great.      Who's seen Videodrome or From Beyond ?     Some lesser known 80's classics.

I watched Alien again a few weeks ago, and that film has hardly aged. The atmosphere, the effects, the acting - I honestly don't think I've seen a better horror movie. I was going to mention 'Let the Right one in', but that's more of a dark, gothic love story. Still a brilliant film though.

Martyrs (Spanish film) - a very brutal film that shows the right amount of violence and psychologically disturbing.

Event Horizon. Other than the whole subplot with the comic relief getting jettisoned and floating around the outside of the ship cracking wise and ultimately surviving, the movie scared the crap out of me.

If we're thinking of the same movie, it's French, not Spanish. But I agree, it's a great movie.

I also enjoy Alien, The Silence of the Lambs and The Shining.

When it comes to horror films I'm not a fan of anything too gory or just plain ridiculous. I prefer supernatural based horror films(ghosts, curses, vampires etc.) That's why I love Japanese horror films, they've got a lot of those types of films(mostly because they have a rich mythology to base it off). Not that there aren't  any Western films like that.
My favorite horror film however is Ring
I am also partial to monster films but I dont' really consider them scary(Predator, Aliens etc.).

The 1950s film or Carpenter's 1980s version?  I rather liked the latter for being impressively nasty, although it made my skin crawl for quite some time afterwards...

Carpenter's version. Still remember parts of it even though I've not seen it for years, and it's one of the few horror films I've seen.

Rather watch it than these modern OMG T3H BLOOODZORZ EVERYWHERE?!!?!?!?!!? 'horror' films that just go out of their way to be 'horror', when in reality they're rather funny. Bring back the atmosphere and psychological horror aspects! :(
