First I would hit play then it would give me the "stopped working" message.

I changed some compatability issues and then got it to launch a bit further only to go black and force me to exit through task manager.

My friend has the exact same video chip but he has windows vista and it works crappy and crashes frequently but it works.

Judding by all I have read on here I know my system is not ideal to run the game, but except for WINDOWS 7 it should run the game.

SO my question is: IS THERE A DEFINITIVE ANSWER TO PLAYING ME1 on WINDOWS 7? Or any good ideas that help RUN THE GAME ON WINDOWS 7?

I see now that a "general protection error" is popping up.

This game is acting in exactly the way that it is supposed when faced with bad quality hardware.  It is your friend who is getting mireacles and magic instead of the ordinary manner in which a crap Intel Chipset Video chip is supposed to fail.

(Whoops?  I said "You do not have the correct Service Pack". Where'd that come from?  I must've been thinking Vista.)  You do not have *ANY* video card at all, and one of those from AMD or nVIDIA is a definite requirement.

You have nothing to complain about, sorry.

Windows 7 SP1 is still a Release Candidate version, so I cannot understand what the Service Pack remark has to do here.

On the other hand, it is always nice to read the readme file before starting the game. And if you look into it,

Game Known Issues
-----------------

Mass Effect does not run on a system using a GMA X3000 video card, a general
protection fault error appear after double clicking the start icon.

Considering the facts that:
1. That Intel card is from an older generation desktop graphic cards
2. You claim your friend can run mass effect on the same system setup

I can only recommend you to visit http://downloadcenter.intel.com and download updated chipset (motherboard) and graphic card drivers.

That was before I had my second coffee. It was still dark outside, but I was wide awake with the roosters ~~ before 6:00 AM. I've corrected the service pack misinformation now.

Gorath you always have the same answer but you never account for the dozens of posts on here that complain about why it will not run on windows 7.

People on here that DO meet all the minimum requirements receive the exact same black screen error. This isn't the first post I have read where you have said "well that other guy is the a MIRACLE.." if you begin to claim miracle too much, it becomes less of a miracle and more like the norm.

BTW, just for the record, I was not complaining. THe game says right when you buy it that it is not compatible on windows 7.

I am not complaining I am trying to gather more info to see if i can solve this problem.

I am considering a new video card but from what I have seen on the other posts even those who meet all the requirements except they are on windows 7 still cant play.

Intel can only produce garbage for video because that is the choice that they make.  It is supposed to be just what it is, a stupid tinker toy of a device, not at all what games require.  The Windows version cannot change what is plain crap into a thing of lovely usefulness.  There is no hardware that can be "downloaded" because Star Trek's Matter Transmitters aren't in general use in 2010 yet.  ME-1 did predate Windows 7, and yet many gamers have used it with this game.

Laptops that are produced so cheaply that all they have for graphics is from Intel are a dead end, a disposable device; there is no graphics upgrade for such poor quality stuff, sorry.

Did you purchase the game via EADM (like me recently during the Christmas sale) by any chance?
I must admit, I never even noticed the fact that it did not list Windows 7 compatability at the time of purchase.

As you are running Windows 7, I found that you need to download the latest Mass Effect patch to get it working, I had the game fail to even start too before downloading the patch, but working fine after installing it.

EADM is not like Steam, the latest patches do not get included (stupidly!) so you often find anything you download is outdated.

I was pleasantly surprised however to find it runs just fine at 1920x1080 on my Windows 7 PC after applying that patch - a big (graphical) improvement over the Xbox 360 version of ME that I also have!

Hope this helps!

Edit: Make sure to undo the compatibility mode changes you made before playing the game, else it will likely mess it up.

There's also this thread with some other ideas, if what I suggested did not help.

On intel's download center, these are named "chipsets". It is fair to assume that if you have an intel's graphics accelerator (on a laptop), you will also have an intel's motherboard (chipset).

However, if you really want to be sure, use the designated tool:
www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/sb/cs-009266.htm

That will open a window which will show you the exact motherboard model (PM45 Express in my case):

Just click the link and at the bottom of the page you will find the product family. In my case it's Series 4 Express. Then you just select the relevant options in the download center website (preview of my case):
