I've never had my character be punished in ME1 for being neutral. That said, I always invested the points in charm and/or intimidate. For RP reasons, mostly. I like my Sheps to have the ability to talk their way out of situations. I know that's a lot of points from powers/weapon skills but that's just how I play it.

The thing I love about Paragon/Renegade in Mass Effect is that, as others have pointed out, it isn't straight good/evil.  Paragon is GENERALLY noble, honest, and honorable, and Renegade is GENERALLY ruthless, efficient, and blunt.  Paragons have their moments of being Lawful Stupid, while Renegades have their moments of being Chaotic Bastard, but in general both are equally valid approaches to solving the situation at hand, and to my knowledge neither approach "locks out" major events in the game.  A Renegade is just as able to make peace with the Quarians and Geth in ME3 as a Paragon, for instance.

I played a Renegade FemShep in ME2 and 3 (because those scars are sexy, I think), and enjoyed it.  I still ended up with a few Paragon points, and my Paragon MShep winds up with several Renegade points, but neither track is exclusive, excepting that there are only a certain amount of points available through all the conversations in the game, and taking one in a specific response means not getting the other for that same response.  But it's perfectly feasible, even common, for a single conversation to raise BOTH scores by an exactly even amount.

It's the best "moral choice" system presented in video gaming to date, in my opinion, precisely because it isn't really a "moral choice" system, more of a "general outlook."

Also, if you're looking at maximizing a specific score, pay attention to your backgrounds.  I don't know if it's the case in ME1, but in ME2 and 3 the background you chose for Shepard will affect your Paragon or Renegade point gain.  An Earthborn War Hero, for instance, increases Paragon score faster.

Honestly I cant see myself rolling Paragon or Renegade straight up any more. One tends to be an idiot too often. The other becomes a psychopathic *******.

And seriously, if you dont believe that Shepard can be a full blown psychopath and sociopath as a pure Renegade, you should watch the clips on YT.

As for Paragade/Renegon runs, I do them for all the reasons people have already brought up. They feel more natural since when Shepard is a reflection of the player behind him.

I never go pure anything. I think several years ago I was more inclined to go 100% Paragon, but I've since deleted that file and tend to be closer to Paragade in ME1.

My approach in this game is to keep all the people/species alive, but be a hardass otherwise, if I'm being disrespected. I might kill a more random NPC if they're directly threatening me.

This tends to max out my Paragon/Charm, but also give me a healthy (1/3ish?) amount of Renegade/Intimidate, enough to pass at least the more minor checks.

ME2 pushes me more to full Paragon but I'll see how it goes for my 'new canon' PC playthrough. ME3 had me more pure Paragon again for the first time around, but now when I play, I'm very distinctly Paragade (even more than ME1).
