For some reason. I always see femshep as a vanguard, adept or engineer.

For me I always seen FemShep to be biotic while MaleShep not.
And from my 7 Sheps, 4 of MaleShep's aren't Biotics while 3 FemShep's are biotics.

The game is absolutely worth playing through as femShep.  Of course I'm biased, since my one and only Shepard is female.  I can't play through with a male Shepard; I've tried.  A major part of this is because I am a major fan of Jennifer Hale and in my opinion her voice work is far superior throughout most (though not all) of both games.

Also, as a bonus, you get some extra dialogue as femShep that you don't get as manShep.  Harkin's conversation in ME1 makes him come off as a lot more sleazy and crass if you walk up to him as a female, and in ME2 the batarian merc recruiter for Garrus' recruitment will make disparaging commentary about how you must have missed the stripper's quarters (which you can promptly shut up with a Renegade interrupt).  There's a little extra flavor to the world that you get only by playing femShep.

Also, just because you did a Liara romance with a manShep should not prevent you from experiencing it as a femShep.  Like several other non-romance situations in both games (Tali's trial being one of the most notable), femShep's stellar voice acting by Hale gives some scenes with Liara an extra layer of emotional depth that's missing from Meer's manShep performance.  The conversation about Benezia after Noveria, the night in Shepard's cabin before Ilos, and almost the entirety of Lair of the Shadow Broker (especially catching up with Liara in Shepard's cabin) really highlight Hale's fantastic performance.  Her "Come back soon, Liara" at the end of a romanced cabin scene in LOTSB is the single most emotional and heartwrenching line of dialogue in either game.

So yeah.  Playing the game through as femShep?  Definitely worth it.

Just chiming in here. Yeah, femShep is definitely worth playing, but then again I'm biased as Commander Shepard is female in my canon. Then again, that's why games like ME are so great, your character is your character. A lot of people have already chimed in on the voice acting, so just let me add that the facial animations are great too. The Garrus romance is particularly good for facial animations as is the LotSB Liara romance.

I was in your shoes just a couple of weeks ago.  You can hear more about my experiences here.

In short, you should most definitely give it a try.  I tackled it by thinking to myself, "if this was a movie, and a female was the lead Shepard, how would I like it to play out story wise."  It took me a bit to get character creation down to what I thought was right for my thoughts of her story, but once I played, I just plowed through like my normal male Shepards.  I enjoyed it thoroughly and started ME2 right up and did the import of my FemShep.

Cheers!

I'd like to echo the sentiment that even if you have tried the DudeShep version, you should definitely consider romancing Liara with a FemShep. The chemistry between Jennifer Hale and Ali Hillis is fantastic, and I think it improves the emotional and romantic tone of the relationship to an even greater extent.

FemShep is a lot more intense, partly because the voice actor is better and partly because feminine is usually more sensual. And it's fun seeing an army of geth getting their asses kicked by a chick. hihi

Fem Shep is a pretty good choice especially for one or two play throughs (in order to get both paragon & renegade achievements). Garrus was my choice for romance when I played (really enjoyed seeing all the war scars turn into real, human emotions) and actually fem Shep was my first character now that I remember.

Voice wise though, I actually prefer male

Also connected more with male Shep. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

I agree with your whole post but I also want to add another unique dialogue that FemShep gets. During Samara's loyalty mission when you're in the Afterlife VIP room you can get extra dialogue as FemShep when you try to get the Turian to leave the Asari alone. Here is the scene.

I'm playing through as a FemShep as we speak. I typically play ManShep but I wanted to give it a try. I find her to be refreshing in some areas but there are some areas where I believe ManShep is better suited. Playing her as a Renegade as well since all of my ManSheps have been Paragons. She can be seriously scary at some points. I recommend either a Garrus or Thane relationship.

Oh I forgot about that one.

I like how all the extra dialogue is where some male assumes that femShep is just there to be objectified because of her sex, and that in each instance you're given the opportunity to tell them just how wrong they are.

"Call me 'princess' again and you'll be picking your teeth up off the floor."

It's wroth it to play the games as many times as possible. I tried a female character once and couldn't get into it really. But if you like choosing a female in games where you can choose gender then go for it. It's not bad or anything, it just wasn't for me.

I have to agree.  The pink mist in ME1 just looks better with FemShep.  lol!  No offense, DudeSheps.  I also think that Liara's feminine nature paired with FemShep's just seems to add to the chemistry.  It's refreshing and rare to see a romantic lesbian relationship in entertainment media.  As far as voice acting goes, it's not surprising that Hillis and Hale have so much chemistry together since they are friends in real life.

Why do people say female Shepard is a better character? Their dialogue is identical.

Voice acting, romances, looks, general feel, etc. Quite a few factors. But it ultimately boils down to personal preference; there is nothing objective here.

I think it's because some people may be bored with the generic male space marine protagonist within a military sci-fi setting, and therefore prefer the alternative. It's a breath of fresh air to be able to play a strong, capable, confident, independant and strong-willed female character. This serves to enrich the Mass Effect universe and trilogy, and is unique in a medium that is largely dominated by male protagonists. Additionally, as Fiery alluded to, other people may also prefer Jennifer Hale's voice acting, and the available romances that are on offer.

It's entirely subjective, and there are many different reasons as to why some people feel that Commander Shepard is a superior character as a woman.

My FemShep is an adept at the moment. But my very first one was a soldier, so there really is no rule to what she should be.

For me, playing as a female Shepard was essential to replay value. I've only been able to play as one male and one female Shepard because once I created them and played through they were Shepard to me (their class, their paragon/renegade status). The only attempt I made to create another male Shepard was in ME2 to romance Jack, but it was weird. In every Bioward game I always play both genders. They do a great job at making both engaging and different enough to make them a great replay.

As for class, I have to agree with the people who commented on female Shepard being a biotic. Nothing more badass than slamming an enemy on the ground or being up close and personal with a shotgun, so my femshep's a vanguard. Funny, since my male Shepard is an infiltrator sniping from a distance.

Come to think of it, all of my FemSheps thus far have been biotics. I have my Adept canon Shepard, and my Sentinel secondary Shepard. Strange.

Dialogue is the same, but the inflections of the dialogue are totally different. DudeShep is very stoic, like a rock that will not be moved before he reaches his objective.  FemShep is much more passionate, like a wildfire that will engulf everything to reach her goal.  Which is “better” is in the eye of the player.

My FemShep is default Jane Shepard. And she is a soldier. For me this class is better than others. Maybe that's because I'm a bad biotic :) Yep...

Regarding voice acting.

I think if you're playing mostly renegade then femshep is the way to go. Mark Meer's renegade just seems more sarcastic and joking, while Jennifer Hale's seems more cold and caluclating. Which I ultimativly feels renegade is about.

I like being a soldier who only knows how to use guns.  Having to rely on people she trusts for biotics and tech adds to my Shepard's character.  Plus, I like the fact that she is not skilled at everything.
