There's a lot of negativity around people who play shooters and the genre itself. Why is this? They have just as much strategy as RPGs and are pretty fun to play.

Depends: sometimes it's elitism, sometimes it's the assumption that all players are like CoDers, other times people just don't like them as games. I must admit I sometimes make the CoD assumption, but mostly I just don't find them very fulfilling to play, at least unless they have a slew of RPG and/or adventure components to them. But I'm under no illusion that many people would find the sort of games and gameplay that appeal to me to be utterly tedious too!

Because many of them feel virually the same. Show main character, state why they they exist or why they are there, state main goal or bad guy, shoot trillions of lesser bad guys to kill main bad guy. Halo, Borderlands, CoD, Prey and many others feel the same to me. Sure the story may be different but the actions and some of the goals feel so similar. To me, it feels like playing the same game again. I like games that come at you from a different angle like portal or prototype for example. In portal, you never even use an actual gun and forces the player to think of new ways to use a portal device. In Prototype, guns are an option but I relish the thought of tearing infected apart or crushing them with my own hands. Guns more or less force a fight to medium to long range where a game like Prototype puts the fight rignt in your face.

Not everyone hate shooters. I think it's a personal preference thing. For me, a FPS is nothing more than taking my frustrations out on pixel people rather than real people, I really don't want a criminal record lol...

I agree with the OP, some shooters are in some cases more fun than RPGs. Others are just, meh, you know.. Point and click type of thing.. not much to it.

I hate their "Let's push out a sequel every year on the conveyor belt" approach and the effect it has on gaming overall.

I play a few of them myself, Serious Sam co-op is somewhat a guilty pleasure of mine.

I like shooters although I don't care much for Call of Duty or World War II games.

It's all these bs mainstream shooters like cod that are leaving a bad taste in everyone's mouth. There are more realistic shooters out there like Operation Flashpoint and Arma2, which actually require some thought to play, as opposed to all the popular mindless stuff.

It's just the in fad to pick on shooters (pew pew pew) i guess some gamers like to feel in some way that they are better and more intelectual than people who play a lot of shooters which they see as mindless games. I never quite got the point of the argument though since gaming is supposed to be fun i like a challange as much as the next person but sometimes i like a simple game just to let off some steam.

And i think those people who complain about shooters the most are the ones who only play complicated RPG's to feel they are in some way better than others.

Theres also elitism amongst shooter fans who look down on RPG gamers as people who lack the reflexes and skill to play shooters but you only really see the RPG point of view on here as its the Bioware boards.

Often its a case of I don't like it/can't play it so it must suck and only idiots would play it. Its like music, alot of people are going to have their own tastes and hate on everyone elses. I'm trying to avoid going into an analogy that equates COD with manufactured pop music here.

Elitism on the internet and people feel too good to play CoD or other mainstream shooters.

I like shooters, third person shooters more than first person though.

^This. The industry is way too inundated with shooters.

Most shooters are FP POV, which I really dislike. Note that I don't hate shooters per se, but the FP POV really turns me off.

Borderlands is more like Diablo than Halo.

Meh. They just don't interest me. The last real shooter I've played is Halo 3. One playthrough and I was done. No need to that over again any time soon.

But... I'm not a hater. :?

Speaking of dislikes, I dislike the obnoxious elitists way more than I dislike shooters. I may to a large extent agree with their gaming preferences, but the way they express themselves and treat their fellow gamers... blah.

It's not that shooter fans can't be as bad and much worse, but I've been avoiding those people (who play multiplayer competitive shooters) for years. Couldn't stomach all the childish nonsense, plus I'm not very competitive, which makes those games a poor match for me anyway.

Sometimes they're good stress relievers, especially when it's just one long mind numbing yet aggressive massacre

everyone hates shooters? Then why does the industry pump them out so much? There's more shooters than any other genre.

I like shooters just not as much as I used to. Haven't really been excited for a FPS since Half-life 2.

I love Uncharted and that is mostly a shooter with a really good melee system.

Its really just a matter of personal taste. I have no interest in the Call of Dutys but I can see why people are.

I doesn't hate shooters, just most people (read: 12 year olds) who play them.

Though recently I've been on a FIFA kick so... yeah

I like shooters but I'm horribly horribly bad at them. I need a really dumbed down shooter to truly enjoy it. Plus I think they probably suffer from the same market pressures as summer action movies- the people making them know they can get away without much story or acting as long as they have stuff blowing up.

I don't hate shooters, but I won't use 60 bucks on a 7 hour singleplayer. Also I don't like the whole "sequel every year, 10$ dlc map packs etc"
