Generally speaking, I will always prefer "non-twitch" games over "twitch" games, and an isometric or other third-person perspective to the first-person perspective. That's two big strikes against shooters. I absolutely loathe first-person twitch because it is supposed to draw you into the action but utterly fails at that for me. The limitations of the technology and the controls are too great to make me feel anything other than artificially blind, deaf and crippled -- and consequently stressed and pissed off. I might feel differently about a true Virtual Reality experience in which all senses are simulated and so is full natural mobilty. *shrug*

I'm also simply not interested in games that are just about blowing sh*t up. Combat is lots of fun, nothing but combat is not.

Plus, I admit I'm rather ticked off at how flashy shooters seem to flourish while the genres that I enjoy flounder or have disappeared (if you don't take the small indie/freeware games into consideration). The gaming industry has definitely lost a lot of variety since my early gamer days, and consequently a lot of appeal.

I like shooters but I'm horribly horribly bad at them. I need a really dumbed down shooter to truly enjoy it. Plus I think they probably suffer from the same market pressures as summer action movies- the people making them know they can get away without much story or acting as long as they have stuff blowing up.

FarCry at GoG. Give it a try. It's not easy though.

Cannot speak for everyone else, but I don't hate shooters.  I just don't enjoy them enough to pay $60 for them; I appreciate the graphics and different improvements made to the gameplay...but ultimately am not interested enough to invest the time and money.

I'll play the latest iteration of Halo, Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty, or Battlefield if a friend wants to play it.  (And I helped my brother get through the last parts of Gears of War on the harder settings so I must not be completely incompetent.)

Not everyone has an elitist attitude.  Hope you're feeling a little less irritated or discouraged.;)

I love shooters, I just can't play them much anymore. The first person view makes me seasick. I likes me some Halo and Half Life (oh and Doom and Quake if I'm feeling nostalgic ;-) )

To the OP - some people like to think what they like is better than what others like - makes them feel special I suppose.

Sorry but what is a twitch game? It takes more than just reflexes to succeed at a shooter.

Twitch games require quick reactive thinking and reflexes by the player. Examples would be Street Fighter 4, Ninja Gaiden, Call of Duty, Devil may cry.

I actually am inclined to like shooters. Not nearly so much as I like RPGs - or at least, the kind of RPG that I like - but I generally like them.

I like Unreal Tournament the most, 2004 being my favourite of them. I like Half-Life, and Half-Life 2, and all of its various off-shoots (except Counter-Strike, which just bores me for some reason). I like Tron 2.0. I liked Doom and Quake when I played them, though it's been a long time since I have. If I sit down to play some random shooter, I'll probably think it's fun.

What I don't like is the idea that the same thing that makes a good FPS makes a good RPG, because at least to me, they're very different. I do like flashy graphics in my shooters, whereas I'd honestly prefer not to have them in RPGs (isometric still being my preference for that). I like first-person view and don't mind having a completely pre-created character in an shooter, even a story-driven one, but I do not either in an RPG (particularly not the second). And so, I dislike it when people make comparisons between RPGs and FPSs, because to me they should be very different, and one thing that's a plus to me for an FPS would be a minus for an RPG and vice versa.

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but perhaps similar reasons are why some people around here might give the impression of hating shooters when they actually don't.

I don't hate shooters. Just those teen-aged idiots that play them. Yes I'm aware they're everywhere but shooting games seem to have the highest concentration.

I like many shooters, but I tend to prefer the ones that push their design into more "extreme" territories. I love STALKER for example, not just because of the free-roaming aspect, but because the combat can feel extremely deadly and handling the weapons can be quite hard.

On the other side of the coin, I love Painkiller because it really is all about the action, great level design and skill (talking about the original game, not the expansions and new game that's come out afterwards). It's clearly directed at a specific audience.

But I tend to have a hard time with the shooters that try for the all-inclusive experience. I find stuff like Halo for example to be incredibly tepid, mediocre. and quite boring.

So yeah, I can definitely enjoy shooters as long as they're not too "in the middle" and playing the safe cards so to speak.

Because this is the Bioware forum, many people here tend to be elitists who disaknowlage any non-RPG genre. Shooters especially since apparently the genre has "corrupted Mass Effect."

I dislike shooters for a more personal reason, which is that they make me physically ill. The few times I've tried to play with a friend, I had to take a break and try again a little later, and was still sick. Added to this, they don't really have a story, which is the main reason I even play video games.

Posted on a Bioware forum which is packed full of DLC content. THE IRONY BURNS.

*cough* recycled maps *cough*

And yeah, I'll never buy a game with a 7 hr. single player campaign that resembles a bad Tom Clancy novel.

I don't care about genres, but I do care about good storytelling. Games shouldn't restrict themselves to genre boundaries - they are there to be broken. Same goes for all forms of entertainment.

Best stories I've experienced from games are the Half-life series, Grim Fandango, Vampire Bloodlines and Mass Effect. For me a good story doesn't correlate with the game genre used...

actully i LOVE shooters, but they cant possibly compare to RPGS. i think most people on this forum site dont hate shooters they just think their overrated. which i agree. dont get me wrong i love halo, gears of war, bad company 2, all that. but games like mass effect are clearly more innovative and deserving of sales that shooters get

Shooters are practicality saturated within the gaming industry and like anything that is all too common, they start to repeat and copy themselves which will start to have a negative effects on the gamers.

Doom, Halo and Gears Of war are classic examples how the repetition has built up within the genre but also has now become a stereotypical example of causal gamers. The "story" aspect has also become an issue however there aren't many people who care.

In my opinion, it has been too long for the next gen "Halo" or "Doom" which will innovate the genre to the next level. An advancement in hardware resources might be needed however I doubt any of the console marketers are going to push the boundaries any time soon.

I like shooters. I like shooters entirely too much. Which is why I avoid them. Jaegermeister is pretty foul, so that's easy to avoid, but this bar here in town mixes these melon flavoured shooters that are to die for good, then sells them dirt cheap. You drink one and it goes down so quickly and smoothly, so you order another and the next thing you know you can hardly stand and your friends are passed out on the floor. I process alcohol pretty quickly so I'm usually massively hungover and trying to use my phone of taxi summoning at the same time, which is even less fun than it sounds.

Shooters are just plain bad ideas. Better to stick to sipping wine, slowly.

Some shooters are okay, I suppose, I just lose interest in them for the most part, mostly due to repetition. But it is a matter of preference for most.

it depends on the game really.
something like CoD: no thank you.
something like singularity: fine by me.

and then there's portal. i dont think i've ever seen a shooter (yes, its a shooter) that doesnt have any violence in it.

these forums are filled with people Arguing that me2 sold out casual FPS fans, is a FPS etc. Thats pretty /facepalm

Anyway shooters are great. People often criticize that shooters are too flashy and compromise gameplay, but they have no idea what they are talking about. Just trying to hard to be the non-conformist elite.

Call of duty had an awesome single player campagin. Multiplayer may be a bit buggy but it's a great game. Even though the multiplayer community is infested with a lot of children, that does not derail the fact that its a great game.

Because most of them are crap games or rely on their multiplayer to carry them.

There are exceptions to this of course.
