I am just now getting around to playing ME1.  My intention is to burn through ME1, if it is possible not to get too sucked in, so I can move on to ME2.

I have a couple questions:

1.) Does my class in ME1 determine the class I play in ME2?
2.) Does this game play similarly to Dragon Age (I realize it techinically is "does DA play like ME1")?

You can change your class (and your looks) when importing a character to ME2 - even if you keep your class, your skills will be gone (ME2 has different skill set).

In me2 you'll be given a chance to switch classes. As for playing simuarly, not sure I get what ya mean. The rpg elements are there with the stat building and all...

ME and DA:O are not similar at all.

I guess what I mean is does the gameplay feel similar? Is combat similar? Can I assume DA was just ME1 with swords instead of guns (on a very basic gameplay level)? My intention is to burn through quickly so I can move on, but I imagine I am going to get lost in the world(s) and end up taking forever to "want" to finish ME1 like I did with DA.

No. ME is far more shooter-esque.

I played a Mage in DA, I would consider him a "shooter" if there ever was one.  I never swung a weapon at an enemy.  I was the controller. Blasting enemies at a distance and setting up my allies.  I assume I will be doing similar in ME1 (based on my class choice).

I realize that they are different games with their own distinct system but from a wide view they look like they use the same engine and similar fundamental 3rd person gameplay mechanics.

They aren't similar at all. Both are good games, but very very different.

Perhaps the biggest difference between DAO and ME1 for me was that you can't directly control your party members in ME1. You're on your own even if you can order your squad mates around. If Shep dies it's game over.

Now, story-wise the two games are pretty similar. You become a member of an exclusive organisation and have to destroy an ancient evil that threatens to annihilate the whole world.

Combat on ME1 is very fast if compared with DAO and on ME2 is faster than ME1, most of time you will be running from one cover to another shooting people or unleashing some biotics/techs on your foes. You don't have to worry so much for what your allies are doing, because you can't costumize their combat tactis, but you can put their skills on your shortcuts to use them when you need it.

@h00fr0g, just to add, if you liked being a controller in DA, I recommend the Adept. They are similar in managing the battlefield.

Ask away if you have any more questions.

combat is very fluid in Mass Effect... I recommend doing every single quest you can do in ME1. including the gathering of all the resources. You'll probably invest a good 40 hours into the game and get into the level 50 range. Very time consuming but you will get the most out of the play through.

You will be able to choose a completely new class in ME2, and redesign or keep your face. can't change the sex though.

I really do recommend playing ME1 as thoroughly as possible there is a lot of good things you may come across that you'll see in ME2. It is worth it. Especially the resources.

ME1 and DAO are two completey different games with completey different style of play. In DAO you have control over every single NPC and your PC; in ME1 you don't have that type of control. ME1 plays very similar to Army of Two or other FPS where you have more than one character on your team that you can issue orders too; however, you do have the ability to activate the NPCs special abilities. I personally I set the NPC in hold and go ahead and kills most of the enemies myself. Immunity, shield, and having an assult rifle definitely makes it easier when equipped with Medium or heavier armor.

You'll see that the feel of the games (DAO and ME) has that BioWare suit on them (lol) but there are no specific similarities in gameplay.
