let's hope she differs from Velanna in at least some respects, like the militant specism and intolerance for pretty much anyone else's existence :P

Velanna was rather interesting....not to mention her party banter with oghren, nathaniel and especially sigrun was beyond hilarious...I basically kept her in my party because she gets some extra dialog in the final dungeon as you run into her sister "seranni" when you first enter that tower...though her ending doesn't seem to change much...whether you slay the architech or not( which I did 99% of time).

oh yeah, she was a great character, she just rubbed me totally the wrong way :P It'd be nice to have a character that I can have in my party without her receiving a diatribe about how weak and disgusting I am at every turn

You know, the way men talk about women honestly really bothers me. So much of it in this thread. Velanna wasn't good enough because she was bitter and combatitive, Isabela isn't good enough because she's a "tramp," Aveline isn't good enough because she's strong and handsome.
What do you guys need, a frigging geisha?

I like all of them! ;) Well, except Velanna. I do rather loathe her. But it's because she's incapable of speaking to others without a diatribe on how horrid they are, and that's just me. She's an interesting character; I just don't like her.

Although, as a woman, I assume you weren't talking to me, I thought I'd post and make sure; don't want anyone to feel like I'm being demeaning.

That was my issue with her as well, kinda why I'm glad we couldn't romance her...although she was quite powerful...but that isn't saying much considering how badass EVERYONE in awakenings seemed...that's before you even started collecting all the "epic" gear and loot in the game...

I always felt Merrill had potential as a character, there was something special about her, despite her having such a small role. When my Dalish elf left the camp something told me this wouldn't be the last I saw of her.

Someone posted a preview from Germany that said Fenris was a mage!

I have no idea how they came up with that. Fenris is still not a mage-- not even a sort-or-mage or an arcane warrior or anything like that.

Doesn't look like Fenris is a mage. And if that's true, then I doubt that Merril is a companion.. maybe a person that you talk to and do a side quest for, but I think that is it.

I'm personally on the side of Fenris is NOT a mage( per the devs)...Merril is companion( atleast as far as this say for now)...and thre hell if I know if either are LI's at this point(though my guess is probadly  yes for atleast one of them...).

Yeah, David Gaider made a stop over at the Fenris thread to confirm he's not a mage. As for potential love interest status for Fenris and Merrill . . . I'm just going to say I think they are. Fenris for sure, and Merril for sure if it's true that she's a (lasting) companion.

Just what I think, however.

Keep in mind that it is not the same men that say this about all the women (or if there men like that, there are few of them).

Nah, not you :) I liked Velanna, but I don't have a problem with people DISLIKING her. I've just seen this attitude in a lot in those "please give us a female elf, we've never had one" threads. Someone will mention Velanna, and everyone jumps into "Well, Velanna didn't count because she was a ****." Like a female elf is only a female elf if she's otherworldly and soft spoken/feisty and spirited.

Please.

Not that I get what's so special about a female elf to begin with. Sure, the elves are my favourite race in Thedas, because of their history and the oppression they fight against, but I'm pretty sure it's the exotic pointed ears that people are really interested in.

Shrug, I'm just jaded. If I have to see one more "X woman is not idealized enough" post, I'll strangle someone, I swear.

I noticed that Fenris was made broader than the man in the elven concept art. It would be neat if they actually 'explored different types of beauty' with Merril and she didn't just look like a slender human woman with pointy ears.

I'm pretty sure the real complaint is that Velanna didn't turn around and want to romance them. That's why she doesn't count.

Well, that's good to know that he went for the jugular on derailing that whole thing...now we just need to wait n see ifthe rest of those reveals are true or not....

On the ladies subject.... I actually liked Velanna as well...especially in combat... which is where she truelly shines in awakenings...her personality was rather standoffish at first but considering the situation going on in that forest who can blame her...LOL. Her personality( ALOT like Morrigan's) for whatever it's worth did improve somewhat when you gifted her and atleast tried to be nice and like I said...her party banter with the other characters was top-notch on the hilarious scale!

Well, I didn't particularly like Morrigan, either (gasp! Oh no she didn'!), so that probably didn't help.

And I agree, her banter was fantastic. Although I thought all the banter was amazing; I usually stopped playing to listen, it was so funny. Not Velanna related, but I especially liked the conversation between Anders and Nathaniel about the similarities between being a mage and being a Howe. Priceless.

ROTFLMAOOOOOO...that was my second favorite one...my favorite was the one at the beginning with oghren and anders...
oghren: so mage how does it feel?
anders; What? to be in control of all this power?
oghren; NO! to be the only one of us running around in a skirt!

LMFAO! Oghren's VA is wayyyyy toooo good and NEEDS to be so some voices in DA 2.

Merill fits into "one DAO returning companion". So no more Anders/Nathaniel i guess...She is the fem elf mage we were waiting for (and maybe the char with that special VA Ser Gaider was talking about).

banter wise i agree. velanna was kool. her cutscenes were AWESOME! (the roots and summoning of sylvans) but her quick to get the poops with me i wasnt keen on. I really enjoyed marethari and i love flemeth. Their characters really appeal to me. Merrill was kool too and hopefully DG can confirm her being a companion.

I guess I just thought that meant one returning companion that lasted longer than ten minutes, but I suppose theres no proof to that whatsoever.

I'm still holding out hope for Anders until someone comes along and crushes it. ^_^

Perhaps Gaider was being tricksy and saying he's not a "mage" in the sense that people in Thedas are born with magic, but he can cast magic anyway thanks to the experiments which left glowing lyrium runes on his skin.

It probably means Fenris isn't a born mage, but a turned mage -- through all the experimenting done on him.

I liked Velanna. That's why she's now in my Origins. Partially at least - now to work on adding the audio (if I can) somehow.

I did like Merrill's personality... she is very observant, caring and she speaks her mind. Those are the traits of a great companion. I hope she is a healer !! **crosses her fingers**

the first time I saw Fenris, I thought he was a magician.

Merrill if she's Keeper, then we have the specialization Keeper?

or is her unique talent tree?

Merrill is less likely to hate all humans. She seemed like the kinder, more Leliana person of the bunch.

If I had to make pointless, probably inaccurate DAO -> DA2 comparisons...

Leliana - Merrill
Aveline - Sten
Morrigan - Fenris (They just seem rather anti-social, or is that me?)
Alistair - ...Carver
Zevran - Isabela/A little Varric

You know, it just occured to me the forum has not made any suppositions about Bethany's personality. I think some people think she might be a henpecking, scolding sister, but it doesn't seem to be a wide-spread assumption.
