Hi,

I played DA right when it came out, but I got bored with my char and never ended up finishing it. I want to play it again all the way through this time and i've decided to make my main char a tank

I'll be playing on the hardest difficulty available without unlocking, whichever that one may be and probably end up with a party of tank/rogue/mage/mage with one mage for healing and one for cc/damage. Is this a good setup? I want to be able to play through with the least amount of party micro-management possible.

My questions are:

1) Is there a clear best race choice? Or will they all basically end up about the same.
2) Any advice on skill selection and specializations? Since I haven't really played much before and have no specs unlocked i'd hate to miss a chance to get one I need. I want my main char to be as much of a brick wall as possible.

Any advice would help, go easy remember i'm a newbie.

the choice of race id really up to you...play something you think will be fun, rather than something that is the 'best; choice...dwarves get a starting boost in constitution i think

if you want your character to be a fortress then go with the shield skill tree...all the extra defence skills you can get are handy...

the party setup you have is pretty standard, a good all round choice

If you want to be hard to kill, I'd recommend a dwarf noble sword and shield warrior and put all your points into dex and str. Ignore the other stats--you won't need them. At level 12, pick up Deathblow (warrior talent) to get back stamina after killing stuff. If you want a larger hp or stamina pool, look to increase it with items.

I recommend dwarf for the 10% spell resist, making them the best from a pure min/max perspective. You'll be happy with any race, though. For talents, go for Overpower early on, then fill out the rest of the weapon and shield tree without worrying about Assault. It's decent, but does less damage than Pummel. What you want is shield mastery and shield tactics. For specializations, I like Templar and Champion, but the others are decent, too. Champion is always useful.

The funnest character I played was a female dwarf noble tank that was Champion/Reaver and was 26 Dex and all other points Str. You sacrifice the massive defense values a Dagger Wielding Dex stack tank gets for a more dps oriented active tank. I never had a problem holding groups of enemies malice and with deathblow and the higher damage rate I didnt have much if any stamina problems.

Soteria's advice is great too if you want more of a defensive tank. I think she has a great guide on the Dagger/Dex tank on the boards somewhere.

Racial wise the best is Dwarf Noble from stats and skills. I think closely followed by Human Noble.

Also a Dwarf Noble Templar can easily max out magic immunity.

Mage = micro management!
Warrior is the king of mindless hack and slash.
Having said that the party you picked will do fine... more about play style than you NEED a special group to get through the game.

For myself, the clear choice for least enjoyable Warden was S&S Warrior; can play on AI almost full time.

My recommendation for most enjoyable character is a Dwarven Rogue DW/ Archer hybrid. Tons of options, and can be designed several ways. I prefer Duelist/ Assassin; let Lil play the Bard, and have not yet tried a Ranger.

A templar/champion is a good choice for tank. You can be immune to magic damage, along with the utility of rally and the aoe knock down of war cry. I'd go 2/1 strength/dexterity at level up until I have the strength requirements for gear, and then either go all out dexterity for high defense, level up both evenly, or have just enough dexterity for talent requirements and put the rest into strength. There's multiple ways to build an effective tank, but I usually aim for around 57 str, 60 dex by level 25.

Have you beaten the game before? If you get frustrated with game difficulty, you may want to consider lowering the difficulty to at least normal until you get used to the game mechanics, especially tactics, then play on nightmare.

Your party setup looks good. Unless you feel that you really need two mages, you could perhaps switch Sten/Oghren for one of the mages for more damage. My favorite parties usually include Alistair, Sten, Leliana and Wynne, with my warden replacing one of those.

My first (and so far only) playthrough has been with S&S human noble warrior (Champion/Templar/SW eventually) and it was really fun. In fact in a lot of big fights, I'd just solo the main boss with my PC while my party took care of the minions. High str/dex, a bit of con and cunning, all the S&S skills (I always kept Shield Wall running, and usually Rally too) and good gear = fairly straightforward run through once I figured out the game mechanics.

Dwarf noble or commoner will give you a boost to health and strength. But like all rpgs play and build your character/party the way you want to, by doing this the game will be more fun and enjoyable.

Definately for a W&S Tank, you'd want to go Dwarf Noble. You get a free Shield Talent at start up and Dwarves get a one in five chance of totally avoid being hit by a magical attack. With gear, you can get close to maxing your resistances. Take a look at items such as the Juggernaut set. You just want to put enough STR into youre character to weild the best weapons and armor, then everything else should go into DEX. CON confuses a lot of newer players, becuase usually in most RPG, more health = more ability to tank. In DA this is not the case; you can max out your defense and armor for the most part meaning, for the most part you simply won't take damage. And when you do, it'll be reduced enough to the point that your mages will be able to keep you alive. Also, Champion/Reaver is great for a tank spec. Templar will allow you to max magic immunity, but on Nightmare, the more powerful abilities, such as Cleanse, removes magical buffs from your party as well. Just keep that in mind. Reaver becomes great for Aura of Pain, which is like an extra taunt (Templar gets Holy Smite, just to let you know, which is similar but you don't take damage. Holy Smite is also an activated ability, Aura of Pain is a sustain, so it's definately great for keeping the threat on you). Reavers also get Blood Frenzy which is an absolutely amazing Tanking ability; for every 10% of HP you lose, you gain +1 damage per attack. Blood Thirst is a nice little clutch heal if you need it too.

Your party setup sounds perfect, but I'd also reccommend utilizing both your mages for healing. You don't need to get every heal spell, but what I personaly like to do is make sure both mages have Haste (haste stacking is AWESOME... and you run around like the Flash) in addition to Regen (Mass Rejuve is sa waste of mana). I also make both my mages Spirit Healers for group healing. Wynne I make a Blood Mage and have her Glyph(Crowd Control)/Buff/Heal. Morrigan I use for Debuff/DMG/Heal. A Bard is always a great Rogue if you want to add them to the party. I like using Shale personally however, but then again  Idon't care about opening chests anymore.

Hope this helps (thought a lot of it has all ready been mentioned).

so for tank go dwarf noble for the free skill, qhich is understandable i still prefer drawf commoner kinda makes me work a little harder to build the tank.
