first of all the games good other than the ridiculous fights in this game my only gripe.  BTW iam playing on normal and will never change to easy.  Iam on the arl howe dungeon with my well geared warrior, ogren, morrigan with healing spells, and lelianna, and it doesnt matter how well geared my party is.  All the howe guards easily tear through my party.  The archers are even worse.  Arl howe is pissing me off.  Anyways this is my angry rant and back to trying to beat howe in this bad designed game.  BTW iam playing on my xbox 360

I'd advise exploring different tactics. The game can be hard, but it's not poorly designed, IMO. I far prefer something challenging to a cakewalk.

Tactics make a world of difference in fights like that.

If you need further help with that or other fights, I see you are registered. There are areas of the forum you can post in that are not spoiler free.

I find it funny that some people have to blame it on something else rather than ask for help, whenever they encounter some difficulty.

But anger is understandable.

dragon age is a good game, its just some fights are frustrating in this game, like real frustrating. Plus I also have mass effect 2 for pc which is also a good game, at least that games difficulty isnt anywhere near frustrating of that of DAO

Interesting; most folks that complain about the game's difficulty say it's too easy, and you're saying that it's harder than you think it should be...

I agree - Nightmare isn't really much of a challenge.
@TS: Make sure you set up tactics properly, consider new gear and pause the game even now and then to asess the situation and issue commands. Attempt the battle step by step and you'll have no trouble.

I can't comment on that particular fight in this section of the forums, but I can point you to my signature for help on other fights. You might get some ideas that can translate. I will say, though, that if you have cone of cold and sleep, those spells are your friends. And kill mages first.

It's no different. I own the PC version, but I've played the 360 one more than enough times to know that it isn't any different in terms of difficulty.

Try again, and also make sure your healer (Morrigan?) doesn't run out of Mana (ever. But don't overuse pots when she doesn't need them). When noone needs healing (for example, at the start) get her to attack with the best she has, provided you have enough pots. If not stick with the healing.

Edit: Nevermind then... How many times did you die before posting this?

Im sorry who says this game is too easy? Even on normal there are parts that are completely unbeatable without resorting to aggroing like 5 guys, running around a corner, killing them then continuing to wittle away at the main force. On anything above normal, this game is stupid difficult, frankly i dont care I mean its better than like fable where the game just holds your hand the whole time, but it is not, by any means, too easy.

Me... But I don't want to have to explain everything or get into an argument so just leave it at that.

I do. I thought the game was hard the first time I played, too, but once I figured things out it quickly became easy even on Nightmare. And no, I'm not doing any sort of crazy AI abuse to do that.

I dont see where player error is the game designs fault.

I never really struggle with any of the fights anymore even on nightmare, how do I do it? Through good strategy\\tactics. Just because it isn't easy doesn't mean its poorly designed. Keep trying different things, reading forums and all the little intricacies will reveal themselves to you and you will feel silly about that rant.

Played through the game as Dexterity Rogue and Mage on PC normal, never had any real problems except when trying to frontal attack all my opponents. I however use the Dog as 5th character because I think it is stupid that this wasn't ingame to begin with.

Using that mod is going to make the game considerably easier. Dog is a strong party member, though frequently underrated because of his lack of items and few abilities. Nothing wrong with using the mod; I'm just saying.

As soon as I manage to re-install the game again (had some minor problems getting the *snip* DLC's to actually work) I will try on settings higher then normal. I always say that a game has to be fun, not depressing... Tried my first play through on Easy to learn stuff and after that went up to normal. Easy is just way to easy even without dog.

I do remember from the first time through that Arl Howe's guards were a fair bit tougher than expected for 'white' enemies (especially when supported by scattershot-spamming archers) and Howe himself was surprisingly deadly for such a weasel of a character - however this was mainly down to false expectations on my part (and possibly a poor party setup). This was on 'normal' (PC).
As with a lot of areas, found that being very wary of traps and avoiding alerting multiple groups of enemies at once made a huge difference.

Hilarious that people complain about it being too hard and at the same time refuse to lower the difficulty setting.

I didn't have much trouble with the fight the OP is talking about, but I do agree with him about the difficulty. I don't think it's a bad design, I just found it a tad to difficult at times. I always played on Normal (because Easy was too easy, there was no middle ground). I did set up combat tactics, had everyone on a specific role, paused here and there to give them Lyrium or healing potions - but what do you do when you try and try to give them a potion and they refuse to drink it and die instead? That was very frustrating.
