I'm almost done with my Terrain Textures Pack.  My concern is that the download size is too big.  I'm using the RLE compression from GIMP, but the .tga file sizes are still quite large (2 to 3.5MB per file).

The Texture Pack has 200 different textures & it takes about 3 .tga files per texture for it to work correctly.

If you guys know of a way to compress these files, please let me know.

Thanks.

Convert them to DDS

Pay attention to alpha channels.

Theres a AMD standalone programme that converts tgas into DDS, lots of bells and whistles.

developer.amd.com/gpu/compressonator/pages/default.aspx

Use dxt5 as your compression type for anything with an Alpha channel, and any textures without a alpha channel can be saved in dxt1, this will really cut down the file size for non-alpha using textures (compressing a tga that has no alpha channel in dxt5 results in the dds having a blank alpha channel in it, which never gets used but almost doubles the dds's file size, which is a waste of texture memory and completly unneccassary).

Also dont forget to give them some mip map levels, for terrain textures id probably go all the way down to 64x64 or even 32x32 given they are seen from a long way off. This will add to their end file size but not by much. Mip Maps help with texture memory and most importantly they stop scintillating and twinkling of textures that are large that are seen from far distances.
