To the latest round of new arrivals.

Read the Stickies (they are pinned up there to offer you HELP), and please don't waste forum space with the same antiquated old questions all over again UNTIL AFTER YOU READ THEM. Once you have seen what has already been discussed, if you still have to know more, follow Raen' guide to reporting.  It's among those pinned threads, and it says "Read First".

I was prompted by a question from someone asking a relatively frequently asked question, about missing the menu text.  The in-forums search tool is badly crippled, but by adding a redirection to a Google or Yahoo search, you can have a good search engine look inside these forums (a redirection is a pointer that names social.bioware.com).

site:social.bioware.com

Each year when summer arrives, the members all find other things to do, so asking questions now (tail end of May as I edit this) is really problematic.

Can you please describe how one adds a redirection to a google or Yahoo search to work with searching these forums?

Use Google advanced search Here and put        http://social.biowar.../forum/         in
"Search within a site or domain:"

The situation had not changed measureably when this was a current comment. The readers were still being more or less "spammed" (no other way to describe it, repeats of the same old many prior examples) by new people who are being very slow to use the available resources here (stickies plus searching). I was hoping to encourage a fairly large crop that day to try just a little harder.

Although the message traffic is way down today, I do see a high number of elderly message threads being recycled. I realize that the Social Forums' own search is terrible, that's why I have suggested using a decent search engine, but with the site: redirector to point to here.

That way, you can avoid the 51 oldest threads with the one word that the local search will accept as a criteria, and do a proper search.

Good luck with it.

Thank you for using the forum to its full advantage, if you are, and if you wanted to do so, and aren't certain, see the "Hello, New Arrivals" announcement linked in next.

If I squint at the monitor just right, this doesn't look quite like sarcasm.  I hope it's not.  A lot of people who've posted questions recently appear to have done at least a little homework first.

Hello, there, new arrivals.

When you ask the same stuff that's been asked many times before, you run the chance of being considered too boring to bother answering with the same thing all over again.  At least make an attempt before you ask, and not become just a statistic, who never is answered.

I am starting to think that you work for EA with the amount of help and pushing you seem to doign to get that pile os steaming crap to work.

What a meaningful existance it must be, hanging around these forums just to berate people who might not be as computer savvy as yourself - and perhaps not even know exactly what they should search for.

God forbid... I find myself coming to the defense of Gorath Alpha. :)

I too have been critical of his "tone" (such an awkward word in the context on online communication, but it's the best I can think of) ... I've been critical of his tone in this very message thread, in fact. But I do not question his motivations so much as his choices in how he chooses to deliver his message. The one does not always relate to the other.

His last post makes a valid and rational argument, and I think it's far more compelling than the standard -- "these are the rules, follow them" line of thought. People are more likely to do something if they agree with the reason for doing it, and his last post offers that, at least. He makes a good argument.

Of course, I know context is everything, and Gorath has been on these forums a long time... so there's a lot of context. But in this case, I rise to his defense. Not that he needs it, or expects it, mind you.

Now, I think I'll log off for a while and make some tea. It's shaping up to be one of *those* days online.

EDIT:  I might add that I've started to use his directed Google search method more and more when helping others on this site.  I consider it a valuable tool in my continuing education in things online.  We can ALL learn things from each other, you, me, Gorath.  That's the real appeal and power of an online social forum, IMHO.  Ah... kettle's boiling.  Salvation!

It having been some days since this reminder was at the top, I have just checked with Google for "Sulcher's Pass", which came up again today:

" About 167 results (0.23 seconds) "

I just know that one of those 167 has more infomation about it than I can offer, which is that "I never lost the place, sorry, and didn't memorize any answers from the many other folks who have done so. Maybe if you check the local archives, you may be rewarded".

Maybe you need to phrase your request in the form of a quest?

"Ho! Forum Dwellers, I am Lord Gorath and I need your assistance. There be many Dragons of Ignorance lurking on this board and to defeat them we need to locate the Tomes of Getoffyourassanddosomesearching. Start by seeking the great Oracle Google and asking it how to solve your problems! With enough adventurers searching surely the answers will come!" etc.

Also offer XP, gold and items of power. Posted Image

Being correct, is no excuse for being pompous or snappy. When people have things go wrong, sometimes not of their fault at all, they may not be 100% clear headed.

Back in the day, as "capt. Blood", I literally racked up thousands of posts helping people on the ancient Planescape: Torment board. If someone doesn't think to use search once, fine, it happens. If one is very pernicketty, then look out for repeat 'offenders'. Be as egocentric as you like then. But the tone used with some genuine first timers makes me despair at times.

The Social Forums' own search isn't much good, and it's missing entirely now; just add the site:social.bioware.com to your criteria in Bing, Google, Yahoo, whatever engine. Very little can go wrong after this long, that hasn't already done so before, and we hope, been answered.

I'd forgotten how acrimonious / contentious things were getting in the tail end of winter.  But if I were to say there was any "Lord" in the place, it would be Chris Priestley and his assorted fellow Biowarians.  I'd consider myself something on the other of the Swordsmaster, a once greatly feared Knight and Warrior, now slowed by age and complaints from his many-times stressed joints.

Like that older Knight, I'm still dangerous with any weapon, and fully capable of showing the young Squires and Knights the best way to overcome an opponent.

Raen has other ambitions, and currently holds the position of fortress seneschal.

Be that as it may, when everyone leaves for the summer, the archives are the best way to seek an answer.  DAO has been available for over a year and a half.  Just about anything that could have happened to a gamer playing it has happened, and been reported here.  Not all of the reports ended in happily solved problems, but nevertheless, it's an extremely valuable resource.

Where I am, we're supposed to be sleeping. I wish that I was, myself. It is the slowest part of the year, the slowest time of the day, and the archives are the most valuable right now.  (Edited in 10 hours later:  message traffic, and readership as well, it would seem, remains slow until noon, CDT.)

Anyone care to tell me what it is about the entire DLC process that causes the majority of members asking about those problems to come in wearing three layers of blindfolds?  Whatever causes that mental blindness, I have decided that I'll stop even scanning the occasional one of those any more.  Just way too boring the eleventeenth time around!

It seems as if we might as well automatically erase the messages when they get near the bottom of the first page, since almost no one will read even that much . .

Interestingly, I wrote the original informational post for this thread after a repeat of the "empty menu" symptom had come up, and that one is active again today, although the current iteration does involve the very particular archive I hope that all new victims of the old symptom will find.

Labor Day weekend is one of the traditional laid back times when we don't expect much to be happening in forums such as these, and it's been running true to form. There are few new messages, and fewer still readers of those few (just our helpful Sami, mostly).

I tend to ignore the unnecessary repeats when I drop in. That's what the archives are saved for, and the stickies are pinned up there for, etc. etc.

The forums will remain only semi-active for close to another month before slowly building back up. Last week, there was almost no difference comparing any of the weekdays' message participation, versus the weekend. Between the stickied posts (at least, the more useful of those) and the archives, that's going to be the best way to go, and as always, ignore the in-forum version of a "Find", since it prefers the oldest, instead of the most current, of its results.
