My game hasn't been retaining the state of the last game when I restart. Achievements aren't stored, the previously running game isn't retained so I have to switch careers whenever I want to load, and I see the instructions for Hacking and Bypassing the first time I attempt either each time I start the game. I tried uninstalling then reinstalling the patch and all of my DLC, but the problem remains. Is it possible that the 1.02 patch is causing the problem? My game state and achievements used to be maintained just fine before I installed it.

Have you moved your My Documents folder from its default location? ME2 is a bit notorious for handling that badly.

I don't think I have.

I'm running Windows Vista and it's under C:\\Users\\<Windows username>\\Documents.

Where is it supposed to be?

Sounds like its default. I assume you would have remembered moving it, anyhow. :)

Under My Documents, you should have a \\Bioware\\Mass Effect 2\\ folder. Check for two more folders under that: there should be a \\Mass Effect 2\\BIOGame\\Profile\\ path in existence. If so, there should be a "Player1.prf" file in the Profile folder. Are any of those things not as expected?

Under My Docs\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2 I only see the Binaries and News folders. News seems to be for the DLC ads that appear underneath the game launcher. The Binaries folder is empty. Not sure if there are any hidden files in there. Can't find the option to display hidden files.

My achievements from before this problem started occuring are still there, those must be getting retrieved from someplace right?

Hmm, so it didn't set up the folders correctly.

You don't even have a Save directory??? I wonder where it's storing them, then, if saving does indeed work.

Under \\Mass Effect 2\\, try creating these folders:

\\Save\\

\\BIOGame\\

\\BIOGame\\Config\\

\\BIOGame\\Logs\\

\\BIOGame\\Profile\\

This might work. Then again, if saving is working, it may simply be treating a different directory as Mass Effect 2's "My Documents" home. So if this doesn't work, you could try searching your disc for "*.pcsav" files and see where your Mass Effect 2 saves turn up.

Ah, so you have some Achievements working too.

I'd scratch what I said and search for either "*.pcsav" or "player1.prf" on your drive and find out where it's keeping them.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. The save folder is there. I figured out how to reveal hidden folders and I see the BIOGame one now too. It looks like all the folders are there, but the Player1 file in the Profile folder hasn't been updated in 4 days, about the last time I saw the game state get persisted. I don't see the Player1 file anywhere else so I don't think it's getting saved someplace else then not found when the game starts up.

I used the save game editor to experiment without having to play ME1 all over again. Is it possible that bioware intentionally locked my achievements because it detected that?

I tried deleting the file and restarting the game. The game creates a new one, but it's still not maintaining state after the restart. Achievements are all gone with the new one and I had to log into my EA account again when it was created. I have the old one backed up so the achievement loss isn't a problem. I just wish I knew why the file isn't getting updated. Clearly the game has permission to modify the file since it created a new one.

After restarting with the new Player1 file again, it looks like state is finally being persisted. I had to complete the last mission over again to get the xp bonus achievement immediately and I'll have to get all the other achievements again, but I'm playing through the game again anyway so it's not that big a loss. Thanks for your help Kloreep.

Glad to hear you were able to narrow it down. Too bad the Player1 file got corrupted, but at least you were planning on a new playthrough anyway. :)
