Sort of like the Tree of Knowledge, of which had the forbidden fruit that Adam and Eve both ate to "become like God". Upon eating that fruit, they got banished from paradise, and everything after that was corrupted by that first sin.

It would be interesting to know whether, if the story is true, the old Gods had anything to do with it. Of course the Chantry says the Maker punished the Old Gods. But what did the old Gods want from the Golden city?

I honestly don't believe the Old Gods really cared about the Golden City. I truly believe it was human arrogance.

It is said the old gods whispered to the Tevinter mages and goaded them on, much like the serpent in the Garden of Eden. Perhaps the Old Gods are like the first fallen angels, banished from the heavens for pride and rebellion, and hoped to convince mortals to continue the rebellion.

Or to simply go home and ask their father for forgiveness.

Could be, though everything I've read on the Old Gods suggest they were perhaps too Luciferian for that, and were bitter, believing they had the right to dwell there, even moreso than the Maker.

Be nice if it was the maker who was the dick this time though, a bored immortal who grew weary of his imperfect creation and simply cast it aside and moved on.

Plus andrastian and dalish bias.

It could be how the Old Gods see it as well. Perhaps the Maker simply abandoned them casually to create something new. It would be down to perspective.

Considering he did that to the spirits/demons, I wouldn't be surprised.

Is there any answer to this in the lore? Surely somebody would have looked into it in the in-universe world.

No because of the genre.   Dragon Age is deliberately postmodern in its story telling.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postmodern_literature

"...Postmodernism is characterized by critique, irony/ionic humor, mockery, parody, playfulness, disorientation, things that are symbolically rich and meaningful, multiple perspectives, conflict, the discontinuity of traditions, contradiction, ambiguity, paradox, metaphors, a strong aesthetic dimension, diversity and multiplicity, fragmentation, as well as questioning pre-established rules, values, expectations, right vs. wrong, good vs. bad, and underlying faith in reason and science."

Speaking of the intro for origins why does the stream of blood from the magisters ritual lead to a dead tree, the symbol found on flemeths black grimoire.
Seems rather important but maybe just coincidence.

The Black city also looks like a tree and in the Fade, the statue where you get the codex "The black city" is a statue of a tree.
Yggdrasil?

I...always assumed they just picked the tree as a placeholder because you can easily see the Black City from the point you get the Codex. Like a plaque at a lookout point. But who knows?

The developers do love to play with and imbed symbolism or concepts based alot of real life esoteric/mystical concepts, so a tree, given the numerous real world symbolism and lroe attached to such a thing, would unlikely be accidental or casual.

Hmm, I'm not so sure. The development team includes storywriters, artists, and musicians. Then there are various supervisors and executives who can look at the creative work and approve it or not for whatever game scene or codex entry and for whatever reason.

With so many people involved in creating the final product, there are bound to be inconsistensies and contradictions. And a lot of the artwork is surely chosen just because "that looks cool", rather than because of any concern with imbedding layers of meaning to the story.

Their target audience is teenagers and young adults who like to buy and play video games. The creative people push for creative integrity and the money people push for market appeal. None of them have the same motivations as somebody who sits down to write a novel, although a lot of the creative people like David G. seem to have aspirations in that direction.

I think people like to read their personal ideas and points of view into works of fiction that they enjoy. I don't see anything wrong with doing that, and it can be kind of fun, and intellectually stimulating, at least unless a discussion group loses perspective and starts fighting about their differing interpretations.

Since the game is rated Mature, I'm fairly sure this wasn't being marketed to the younger crowd. And I don't think they were necessarily going for specific symbolism all the way, but certain things seem to hold consistent meanings in different cultures.

Huh. I could have sworn that one of the indexes indicated that *something* still dwelled in the Black City, and that whatever it is, the taint and the darkspawn are both linked to it.

Who knows? Maybe Flemeth is that *something.*

I don't think it was Flemeth, since she was adamant that the Blight was a threat to her also.
