If you say we are giving them Horns because they look cooler, At least you are being honest. what I hate is inconsistency in RPG's. There was so much they could of worked with the story of DAo. Do the Qunari really need Horns to differentiate them from everyone else in the world? hell No they had a whole culture to work with. Making petty cosmetic Q's is weak for a story. It seems like to me Bioware is picking easy choices, which then I worry if it being rushed out and not much thought is going into story. If the writing sucks the game will suck
While I get your point, I think in a visual medium like a video game there is a need to visually differentiate to a greater extent than there might be in books, for example. It is true that the primary distinction *visually* between the groups in Origins was, purely and simply, their height and frame. When the Warden meets Sten, s/he can ask "What are you?", a question like this seems to imply a level of differentiation in appearance that just didn't really seem prevalent. I don't get why the Warden wouldn't just assume Sten was a taller-than-average human with a deep tan.
The visual change is a retcon, yes, but I don't think it really diminishes anything. And at least Bioware is constructing a story around why some Qunari have horns and others don't, rather than just saying they didn't all along. For example, hornless Qunari are considered special and are often in high-ranking positions or sent (like Sten) as envoys/investigators/etcetera into foreign lands, presumably because they stand out less to non-Qunari and are less intimidating (though for the Qunari themselves, the lack of horns is intimidating). It was also mentioned early on that the Tal'Vashoth often de-horn themselves, presumably to represent their separation from the Qun, thus accountign for why none of the Qunari mercs had horns.
So, considering it is basically a visual retcon, I am pleased that Bioware is constructing a cultural narrative around the visual redesign.
All the info above, btw, came from memory regarding one of the earliest threads, when the redesign was unveiled.
