Please explain why a romance with "an inanimate thing with no or unknown sex or gender." is a heterosexual option. Are male!Shepard's partner's automatically female?

Edit to clarify: I was referring to the definition of "it" being "The third-person singular personal pronoun used to refer to [...] to an inanimate thing with no or unknown sex or gender". I was under the impression that female pronouns should be used for known females.

Well, admittedly, that phrase would be considered racist by many because for most of our history, only racist people have bothered saying it (there's not as much need for a deliberate racial identity and pride in it if you're the dominant race). Similarly, explicitly supporting heterosexuality is utterly pointless because unlike homosexuality, its presence in-game is never in doubt. It's a common bullying tactic of presenting the powerful majority as a put-upon minority, and the way it's phrased means that it can't literally be construed as offensive.
