Umm and you want  Russian for Tevinter because they used blood magic to build a magic empire ? Oh, wait... <_<

I don't want it, but that's how things are. Italy was famous for city-states and trade centers, so we got Antivia. Russians used by almost every computer game as villains\\opressors\\killers, so we got Tevinter Imperium.

Germans and English accents are used just as frequently to depict the villain. The latter has its own TV trope. Doesn't help us much. :wizard:

The Antivan accent is supposed to be Italian? Then why do Zevran sound like Antonio Banderas?

At first I thought it was a shout out to Puss in Boots.

I do believe Zev was intended to sound Spanish, not Italian.

I always assumed that Antiva was based on/inspired by Al-Andalus, much like Calimshan in the Forgotten Realms.

The country is inspired by italian city-states in general and Venice in particular.

And Russia is famous for killing people? You know, I am tempted to report you.
Because (purely on “historical” ground) I can justify using the American accents here – Like they oppressed the native population (elves) and used an atomic bomb (Magic for sinking the Arlathan) during the war.

We got French, because they got one of the most powerful knights during medieval ages=> they invaded Ferelden and were feared for their powerful chevaliers. That's just accents!

Also, they're opressive sexist pigs while the Fereldans plucky nation of people doing whats "right".

Thank you Herr Uhl. Couldn't  have said it better :)

Well, to be fair, we've mostly gotten the Fereldan version thus far.

He's only saying that Russians tend to be portrayed as villains in movies and video games. Which is true... or at least it used to be that way.

Why did he mention Italy then?  He should have said something like "It's an old and sacred tradition to discriminate people based on their accents, we do not want  to change it.  It’s fine really, cause it's a tradition , if you don't like it - STFU

I don't think because an area's government and economic structures are inspired from a particular doesn't mean everything about the area is going to be replicated. No real reason why they can't be inspired by the Italian city-states and the people have a spanish accent.

No, there isn't. I just didn't know that it was inspired by Venice. I assumed, based on the accent, that it was based on one of the old Iberian kingdoms.

Learn the difference between "actual" history(which is matter of constant
debate) and something based on historical events and public image of
that events.
The latter can produce Pictish tribes assaulting palisades with help of trebuchetes(King Arthur) and Braveheart.
P.S. Also, "based on", does not mean "equal in every part".

No one can. No one who isn't Danish, that is. It's something of a Danish shibboleth, or so I've heard.

So, we should reinforce those views by using the stereotypes each and every time we can?

I doubt it is possible to "overcome" that stereotypes. I don't think someone would bother with changing things because stereotypes are easily recognisable.

Which is sad.

I've recently read an article with his VA. He was supposed to sound latin, Spanish preferably, but his VA only learned French in school.

If people thought like that we would still have Slavery in the States and general woman-get-back-to-the-kitchen attitude.

Every comparison is true only to a certain degree, after which it's turning to utter absurd.

Since the Dalish (whose language seems to have greatly influenced Arcanum, the language of the Tevinter Empire) speak with Welsh accents, I wouldn't be surprised if the Tevinter just spoke with a West Country dialect.

Based on what I've read about Arcanum on Dragon Age Wiki, it seems to be a mostly Germanic-inspired language with a few Romance-inspired words thrown in.

The Dalish had no accent either in Origins, but, if memory serves, they're getting Welsh accents in DA2.

They had American accents, right?

I say let the darkspawn learn Danish. It would be an interesting twist if they learned to speak only to realize they could just as well have stuck with grunts and growls.
