The Antivan accent is supposed to be Italian? Then why do Zevran sound like Antonio Banderas?
At first I thought it was a shout out to Puss in Boots.

The country is inspired by italian city-states in general and Venice in particular.

I don't think because an area's government and economic structures are inspired from a particular doesn't mean everything about the area is going to be replicated. No real reason why they can't be inspired by the Italian city-states and the people have a spanish accent.

No, there isn't. I just didn't know that it was inspired by Venice. I assumed, based on the accent, that it was based on one of the old Iberian kingdoms.

I don't really know if it is, Northern Italy was hardly the only area where city states existed after all. Unless the devs have specifically stated they modeled around the Italian states I'd say it's just as likely to be based on pre-Castille Iberia. Hell I always saw the Free Marches more representative of the Lombard League then Antiva based on what we know.

Well, according to David Gaider it was: "Yes, Antiva is a fictionalized version of a medieval Italian city-state like Venice. It's not a perfect comparison by any means, but then none of the Thedas nations are meant to be. They're inspired by real-world history, but that's where it remains.
No, we did not use an Italian accent for Antiva.
And marioflag is half-right in that the original name for Antiva was Calabria. But only because we liked the sound of it. If there are any further similarities between the real Calabria and the Antiva that we have now it's purely coincidental."

But not very likely. I'm fairly sure they've already said that all humans will speak with English accents, but that the exact dialect will depend on their nationality. I may be remembering it wrong, though.

WHAT O_o?

Antivans and Orlesians dont have english accents... the SPEAK english but have spanish and french accents... where have you been?

Haha! You're right. It's 6:00 AM here. -tired-
The fact that I just commented on the fact that Antivans have Spanish accents makes me feel extra stupid.

Russian accents... As unbelievably  sexy they are(Tali ftw)

I from Russia and can say that Tali doesn't have Russian accent. Romanian, Gipsy, maybe somethink from Middle East like Israeli, but not Russian.

I guess russian. As Tevinter Imperium is evil, then it is natural as
russians are the main villains in majority of computer games, movies
etc.

It's not logic. Greek is not fitting for a mighty Blood Mage/Slavery country.

Funny thing, but because of our cultural and religious connection with Orthodox Greece, nationalists here, in Russia, see Byzantium as our ancestor and if our politicians speak about our superiority over Europe and USA then always with motto like "Russian Federation is a New Byzantium Empire, Moscow is a 3th Rome or Second Constantinople."

Stop speaking bull****. Nationalists don't care about Third Rome concept at all, except for a hundred or so clowns like Prochanov, and such odious small groups can be found in ANY country. As for Byzantine Empire - that's official position of Russian Orthodox Church since Middle Ages - Moscow Patriarchate coincider themselves as an "heirs" of Bizantine Empire, common fact depicted even in old "Peter the Great" film's cameo. But that is related only to religion aspect, as with Byzantine empire's decline virtually only Orthodox Patriarchate remain - in Russia.

The only Tevinter we got in DA:O is a slaver and he got a slight accent. So "villain" image is mainteined. Some people wish to wage a holywar on this topic but I'm ok with that as this is only a game.

They spoke Greek and Latin in the Byzantine Empire. Giving Tevinter a Russian accent because it sounds "badass" is tasteless. But the choice seems probable, even though there are more logical choices, but they have better reasons for that, I suppose.

And it is common occurrence that people find their own accent awkward and dislike the accent of their national neighbours.
