The problem with that, Mr. Woo, is that it's a stale formula. Over and over we see the same thing--- parents die, town gets destroyed, and the young boy/girl goes on a journey to save the world. (I'm pretty sure I just named every RPG ever made.)

Blame Joseph Campbell.

No. Then again, I play a wide range of games that let me do more than that.

Such as Dragon Age II.

Yes! Let's go side with the darkspawn army! Let's stand at the front of their ranks and...oh crap they killed us and destroyed everything...there's no way you can join the darkspawn...that's like siding with an asteroid about to smash earth...it just doesn't work out for you...

I imagine Hawke might be able to do some pretty evil things, but s/he isn't going to become Kirkwalls Champion, get to a high place in society or whatever and then just BURN IT ALL TO THE GROUND for lolz. It just doesn't make sense.

The same way if Shepard had sided with Saren/the Collectors s/he would just end up indoctrinated, or paste...

You're playing Dragon Age 2? Mind lending me your time machine?

And yet Awakening proved that they are not that bad and can actually be controlled. Your logic makes no sense dude. It's all about writing. So if the Bioware writers make you the champion of the darkspawn, then it's as easy as that. I can literally think of a million ways on the spot

If you pick a certain path in Fallout: New Vegas you can help execute an extremely radical shift in the status quo.   Granted, that kind of change really wasn't what I was getting at in my first post - it still qualifies.

Well, DA2 is one for three, I guess. Town gets destroyed. Hawke isn't saving the world, and as some of the previews have pointed out, family plays a substantial role in the story.

You'll have to play the game, though, and see what you think of the story we've told.

Disagree. I've always thought the Fallout series is one of the best around.

The Fallout world isn't destroyed, merely in ruins, there is still life in it.

Come on now. Obviously by destroying the world we don't mean literally extinguishing all life.

I'm thinking more of pushing the world into anarchy (while still holding a strong foot in it). You know, destroy allk established governments, kill any possible threats, this, that.

Well, I know atleast one game (Arcanum) that lets you destroy all life in the world.

In Oblivion, I spent a great deal of time running through meadows and over grassy hill, constantly spamming the jump button to increase my Acrobatics, and picking flowers for Alchemy ingredients.

I accidentally deleted the wrong part, and forgot your name, but anyway the OP said...

Awakening =/= Origins, which is what I was refering to.

Yes, and I suppose the novels have NOTHING to do with lore then and that can just be cheaply contradicted as fanservice then?

If I'm the savior of a town, I get known as their Champion to the public.
If I side with the conquerors and conquer the town, I'm also known as the Champion but to the conquerors instead of the public.
If I side with no-one, wipe them both out and take my place at the top by pretending I tried my best to save the town but failed before stopping the conquerors, I'm the Champion to whoever is left and I'm at the top of my game.

ect.

I'm pretty sure they've marketted DA2 as having no super awesome save-the-world group (Grey Warden) and not being about saving the world. In fact, we've known that for quite some time. Just look at Hawke's origins, he rises to power.. he doesn't start off as some heroic figure. And from what I can tell, the framed narrative is setting the stage for things to come later.. probably in DA3. We know very little about the conflict or overall plot of DA2 so far so let's not jump to conclusions.

Besides, there's more than two options: save the world or destroy the world. I have a feeling Hawke is doing neither of those two things.

Oh hell yeah I'm going to play it. Despite my minor wish for there to be more of a choice in the story's morality scale, it's still  a game developed by Bioware so chances are it will have me glued to my seat for hours (maybe days???).

Still, I would have loved to see something like Darkspawn Chronicles (while playing as my Warden).

Also, as someone mentioned in a different post.. To make 'evil' choices, or whatever you want to call them, almost have no benefits. The lure of the 'low path' is the choice of least resistance and greatest power, which is why there are so few 'good' people. The rewards for being 'bad' or 'evil' are nil, bordering on detrimental. I mean, how does it help a PC to ignore the NPC in need? (the usual 'evil" choice). A loss of EXP and a loss of $ and a gain.....where? Evil needs to make more sense and be easier to choose IMO.

And the BioWare dev saying they will pretty much never include 'evil' options is pretty lame... even from a long time BioWare fan.. At some point the technology will allow for greater choice and a more diverse gaming experience, if BioWare doesn't take advantage of that inevitable fact, someone else will...

Psycho murderer Krueger or pedophile Krueger? Or a mix of both?

Child: Hey mister.
[Take child.]
[Bribe child.]
[Kill child.]
[Enter child's dream.]
[Offer child candy.]
[Leave child.]
"Are your parents around?"

Maybe add in NPCs who ask you to do evil things? Like I mentioned, the Blood Mage in The Chantry seemed like quite a swell fellow. I would have followed any command he requested.

I compeletly agree. And I'm waiting anxiously for this time to come. Sadly for now only Lionhead is experimenting with this formula and they're failing miserably.

Alas, "You can do ANYTHING!"

I don't like the Oblivion / Elder Scrolls / Fable evil where you're just a psychotic murderer who murders stuff for the sake of murdering.

Krueger wasn't a pedophile in the original movie, So it would be psycho murderer
