It's just a shame that they don't market ME with FemShep because Jennifer Hale makes Mark Meer sound like he's reading a kindergarten book.

Why does every discussion about female protagonists always result in someone unfairly - and inaccurately - slamming Mark Meer?

Because Mark Meer is clearly a  commie.

I meen is that I don't want the female Hawke to be a "lesser" protagonist than the male Hawke.

I don't really think this is a concern, personally.  Maybe in Bioware's marketing materials, but in the general population of people I know who played Mass Effect, fem!Shep is FAR more popular, mostly because Jennifer Hale's voice acting is quite popular.

This is all a result of assigning a name/designation of some kind to the PC (which actually allows the PC to become the "face" of the game in the marketing materials) anyway.  I'd rather have ANY PC, male, female, dwarf, elf, WHATEVER as the "face" of the game instead of, say, Sarevok, which is what it was before we had Named PC.

Hey, Bioware, how about for the next Dragon Age you let us pick our RACE, but EVERYONE HAS TO PLAY A GIRL.  And you put Dwarf!PC in the marketing materials.  Really screw with people's heads.

Come on, Shorts, you can't call somone's opinion on Meer inaccurate. Some people think his voice acting is awful...most people prefer FemShep's quality.

I know you think she's hammy, but I don't...most of time. And anyone who brings up FemShep and ManShep is bound to lead in to the voice acting. It's not like anyone's unfairly targeting him--a lot of people feel he delivers all of his lines woodenly.

I was at Pax East last year and this discussion came up about the marketing of ME2. We had a very large stand up, cut out thing in our room with the male Shep and the discussion of the panel was females and gaming. I don't remember all of the companies represented on the panel, but it was the most infuriating panel I have every attended in my life, as a woman. I was hoping for some new ideas or methods by companies to acknowledge and reach a female player, but no, it was basically "guys play games more so, lol, of course Shep in advertising as male ain't changing, go play farmville noob." Literally, the "women games" represented on that panel were farmville and hello kitty island adventures. I spent the whole panel laughing.

So yeah, my point is, I'm proud of Bioware for actually spending time to make fem Hawke real and not a reskinned afterthought in game, but sadly the OP will be disappointed if she/he ever expects equal gender representation in marketing/reviews. They'll probably always demo a male lead and reviews will always refer to Hawke as "him." Considering gaming companies have made no inroads in attracting female employees over the last decade (really it's sad) I don't expect much progress to be made toward attracting female gamers in ways it matters.

When they break out something like "reading from a kindergarten book" I can.

It's intentional.  He talks about it in interviews.  He's trying to keep Shepard consistent.  It bothers me that few appreciate this.   It wouldn't be such a problem if people were saying, "I get what Meer is trying to do but..."  But almost nobody does, they either imply or even explicitly state that he "sucks."

I assumed you were directing your comment to everyone in the anti-Meer brigade. My bad.

Honestly? I never noticed the consistency. Not because I chose not to, but because I rarely play a Paragade or Renegon. I get why you like him a bit more now, though. It doesn't change my opinion, but at least it makes a bit more sense.

Maybe it is because I played FemShep first, but it always felt like MaleShep is a bad copy.

I thought Hale did a better job than Meer in ME1, and Meer did a better job than Hale in ME2.

I couldn't say, it was just that I heard FemShep say it first. And then I played MaleShep and I got the same line from a guy ... kinda wierd. They should have made him a bit different probably.

It's why I can't go back to the Mass Effect forums, they'll kill me.

Anyway, the recent interviews just before Christmas (prior to that, too), the Leads at Bioware ( the Bioware staff, for that matter): David Gaider, Mike Laidlaw, Darrath, all use she or he… truly, a concerting effort. The reviewers too, utilized those same pronouns (she or he for both male and female Hawke) interchangeably.

I didn't like Hale voicing Bastila. I had the game in german language first and later the english. And while german voice acting is usually lower quality than the original, Bastila's german voice actress' voice wasn't as 'rough' as the english. It is interesting how the whole character changes with a different voice.

I get what he's trying to do, but I don't like it. He's awesome in other roles, but he sounds emotionless as Shepard. Nothing wrong with Meer himself.

Also, I don't care what pronoun people on forums use to refer to Shepard or Hawke. It would be nice to get some acknowledgement on a marketing/advertising level, though. More than just a picture, you know?

lol this isnt about chest anymore

and I am really asking why should any of the female gamers care. You want to be noticed in the gaming industry? or you dont?

Why shouldn't they? I don't see what's so hard to understand about it.

from my experience, they prefer to remain unknown to avoid unwanted attentions, and to simply play the game in piece

I guess times has changed?

No, they would prefer to not be hit on, belittled or be told they are guys, which is relatively common even now. God, the amount of abuse women took back when online gaming was launched with Halo 2 was astonishing. That is the only reason many girls are not forthcoming about their gender online. Not that they should have to be.

As for Meer and Hale. I believe it stems from a misguided, perhaps even subconscious, belief that if we continue to pan him and praise Hale. Bioware will show her greater favor. Personally, I find Meer's portrayal rather solid. He has his flat moments but some absolutely fantastic ones (Tali's loyalty mission; renegade style.) Hale is not different and certainly not flawless. I merely have come to prefer her.

*sigh* Yeah. It seems saying you're a female is an open invitation for harrassment in so many places. Meh.

Yep. It's an opinion, not a fact. If I state my preference for one over the other, I'm not saying there is no value or need for the other. If people like something I don't, good for them. It doesn't affect me, the same way me likng the other shouldn't affect them. If I don't like Meer's portrayal of Shepard it doesn't really affect anything but my own opinion. But yeah, wanting more inclusion isn't saying I want ONLY female Shepard to be featured, male Shepard be damned, just that being used in a some of the myriad promotional materials would be nice too.

You play CoD? Little surprised if so, since that game is panned to all kinds of hell on this forum, xD.

In any event. There is some hilarity from guys that harass like that. They generally have fragile pride and losing to a girl is akin to death. It can be quite amusing. I played a girl whose clanmate had a tendency to aim her sniper a little low. Apparently, she was yelled at for many more reasons than because she was a girl. :P

Just makes me think, My gf also plays, even not as much as I. But I am always buying the games, sometimes we buy them together.. Anyway, if girls would buy more games as in opposite to wait until their bf buys them, then marketing would consider them more? I mean there is always the talk about who plays, but I guess marketing is more interested in who buys.
