How is this guy able to start the battle with a spell trigger of Spell shield, Spell trap, Absolute Immunity, Protection from energy, and then later use another spell trigger with Fire shield red + Fireshield Blue + Mislead + Globe of Invulnerability?

Not to mention, he has a contingency containing four spells, again Spell shield + Mislead + Spell turning + Absolute immunity and near the end of the fight triggers another contingency containing Protection from magical weapons or Absolute immunity.

Does this guy cheat or was he a former Chosen of __________ (insert Seldarine god)? Not to mention, how was he even able to retain his spellcasting abilities if he was so terribly cursed?

Isn't that explained in the story? He tries to become a god by stealing the protagonist's soul and draining the tree of life in addition to whatever other arcane studies he might have been doing.

Even before he stole the protagonist's soul he was still a very powerful mage, being able to cast unique spells like "Rapture of the father", for instance. He merely needed the divine soul to revitalize himself so that he wouldn't wither away completely before taking his revenge.

If the curse that the Seldarine put on him was so terrible, I don't see how he could keep his spellcasting abilities, seeing that for instance he gradually lost all his memories.

Irenicus jumps through a whole lot of hoops just because the devs wanted a kick-ass mage enemy (as if Kangaxx & the Twisted rune weren't enough already).

He cheats. Every boss in every rpg ever made cheats. If they wouldn't cheat, they'd be complete pushovers. It's the devs trying to compensate for the horrible AI of 99% of all games. And it's not just rpg's. RTS games are just as bad. The only game i've ever played in which the computer does not cheat (as far as i can see) is Chessmaster.

Tree of Life Irenicus is dumb as nails. Even the final battle in hell against Irenicus can easily be won without any partymember losing a single hitpoint. Same for Kangaxx and Twisted Rune, once you've figured them out.

On another note, is it possible to kill Irenicus in teh final battle without him teleporting *once*? I loaded up Imoen and Nalia with two Chain Contingencies containing three Horrid Wiltings, and he didn't go beneath "near death".

It could be argued that what the Seldarine took from Jon was not his intellect and intellectual memories, but his emotions, empathy, and emotional memories. Thus he was still fine with the mechanics of spell casting, but had lost even the memory of the memory of his love for Ellesime. Similarly his relation to Bodhi was no longer brotherly/sisterly affection, but the respect of a master for a very competant and useful servant.

Jon cheats, no doubt about it. It's for game balance. From a story perspective: Jon has been preparing for this day for a very long time. The Seldarine took his Elven soul. The whole idea of his exile was that he re-examine his choices and seek repentance. Instead he seeks revenge.

The Seldarine did not take his Mage powers. He is meant to be an arch mage on the level of Elminster himself.

A spell only Irenicus can cast. It's the one that takes away the PC's soul and gives it to Irenicus.

It also massacres shadow thieves with no save.

I always have a good laugh when Irenicus one-shots all those Cowled Wizards, which were artificially loaded with the worst saves in Faerun, just to make him look badass.

If they hadn't interfered, Imoen would've magic missiles him to death.

Not only do their saving throws suck, their protection spell choices against a spell caster are rather questionable as well.

I hate Cowled Wizards. 5000 gold to use magic in the city indeed.

Just use magic in a remote area and then kill them.

The NPC specific spells are just in the game to get the cutscenes to look cool and different. Other than that they are never used against the protagonist and party. Compare them to the spells that the protagonist can cast / casts in the dream cutscenes.
